Track boring, tyres made it a lot worse. Happy with the result of course, and well done to Mercedes getting the constructors.

That tyres thing is really odd. Did Pirelli really not have a proper opportunity to assess the track? It was as if somebody thought, "how can we take all the excitement out of the Russian Grand Prix?"

Reading the Autosport forums, it seems actually people aren't sure whether it was tyres or fuel which lead to the yawnfest. In theory, durable tyres should allow drivers to push their cars and risk more, but it sounds like many cars were on the limit with fuel so were managing that. I think fuel + tyres + few overtaking spots lead to today's race being the worst of the season. And having no race at the front because of Nico buckling under the pressure at Turn 1 also didn't help.

Willing to give Sochi another chance next year now that the unknowns are known. If it still gives us a boring race, then I'll write it off.

Fernando Alonso: Ferrari confirm that Spaniard will leave

Fernando Alonso is leaving Ferrari at the end of this season, the company's outgoing president Luca Di Montezemolo has confirmed.

Alonso's departure is an open secret in Formula 1 but the team have not yet announced it, nor their decision to replace him with Sebastian Vettel.

Di Montezemolo told Italian television: "Fernando is leaving for two reasons.

"One, he wants another environment. Two, because he is an age when he cannot wait to win again."

Alonso, 33, asked Di Montezemolo in the summer to be released from his contract, after losing faith that Ferrari could produce a winning car in the near future.

The Spaniard has been with Ferrari since 2010, and has finished runner-up in the world championship to Red Bull's Vettel three times in the last four years. He lost out in the final race in both 2010 and 2012.

Di Montezemolo, who was speaking on a television show looking back on his 23 years with Ferrari, said: "He was disappointed that he has not won over these last years and wanted new stimulus."

Alonso is deciding between joining McLaren, who have made him a huge offer to lead their team into their new engine partnership with Honda next season, or taking a year off in the hope of finding a seat at Mercedes in 2016.

The two-time world champion said at the Russian Grand Prix at the weekend that his choice would be "obvious" when it was announced.

He said he did not think he would be using a Mercedes engine in 2015, and added that there was "probably not a big risk" of him not being in F1 next year.

Di Montezemolo this week officially left his role as president of Ferrari, which he has held since 1991.

He has been replaced by Sergio Marchionne, the chief executive officer of parent company Fiat.

Force India says it has reached an agreement with Nico Hulkenberg that will see the Formula One driver continue to race with the team until 2015.

The 27-year-old German rejoined Force India ahead of the start of the 2014 season after spending the 2013 campaign with Sauber.

Hulkenberg says "this is a team I know extremely well and we've enjoyed a great year together with some special results."

Hulkenberg has four fifth-place finishes in 13 races this season.

Financially-troubled F1 team Caterham given permission to miss next two races

Financially-troubled Formula One team Caterham has been granted permission to miss the next two races while it seeks a new buyer.

F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone spoke Friday to the insolvency specialists who have been handed control of Caterham, which may have to miss the races in the United States and Brazil in the coming weeks.

Administrator Finbarr O’Connell closed the team factory in the English county of Oxfordshire on Thursday, but is hopeful Caterham can be saved before this season ends on Nov. 23 in Abu Dhabi.

“Mr. Ecclestone agreed to support the administrators in their wish to sell the Formula One team to a party with the financial strength to sustain it into the future,” a statement from administrators Smith & Williamson said after the call between Ecclestone and O’Connell. “Mr. Ecclestone also agreed to give dispensation to Caterham F1 such that it could, if necessary, miss the U.S. and Brazilian Grands Prix, but hoped that a new owner would be in a position to race the team at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.”

The past and present owners of Caterham have been engaged in a dispute over the last week leading up to Friday’s announcement.

Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes said he is yet to be paid for the shares to relinquish his ownership, while the buyers in a consortium of Swiss and Middle Eastern businessmen who took over Caterham at the end of June insist everything has been done properly.

The administrators said they have been contracted by “a number of interested parties expressing a wish to buy the team.”

“They hope a transaction with an operator of substantial financial means can be concluded in the next few weeks,” the Smith & Williamson statement said. “It is hoped that any purchaser of the F1 team will take over the employees and they will be able to recommence their work.”

US GP: F1 alters qualifying for Austin with Caterham, Marussia out

Formula 1's qualifying format has been altered for the United States Grand Prix because of the absence of Caterham and Marussia.

With the F1 grid reduced to 18 cars, the old format would have meant that just two cars would be eliminated from Q1 if no change had taken place.

The matter was further complicated by the fact that Sebastian Vettel is unlikely to take part in qualifying at all because of an engine penalty.

In light of the situation, and the fact that the F1 regulations do not cater for a scenario where there are only 18 cars, the Austin GP stewards met on Thursday to discuss what to do.

They agreed that the format would be changed so that four cars would be put out in Q1 and four cars would be put out in Q2, leaving Q3 as a traditional shootout between the fastest 10 drivers.

A statement issued by the stewards said: "Having regard to the principles established in the Formula 1 sporting regulations article 33.1, the stewards decide that the slowest four cars in Q1 will [be] prohibited from taking any further part in the session, and the slowest four cars in Q2 will likewise be prohibited from taking any further part in the session."

If he scores 1 more point than Rosberg in Brazil he will be the Champion as far as I'm concerned. **** this double points ****.

SU-PREME comeback today!

Five wins in a row! B) B) B) B) B)

32 wins makes him the most successful British F1 driver ever on race wins.

And he's equalled Alonso's total of race wins too.

It's Hammertime :D

Administrator Finbarr O'Connell told the Press Association that the entry was "absolutely essential" if it wanted to find a buyer.

"With a team having an entry in the championship it makes them a far more viable proposition for us to do a deal," he said.

Marussia officially go out of business after failing to find a buyer

The Formula One team Marussia have officially gone out of business, with the loss of more than 200 jobs, administrators said in a statement on Friday.

The Banbury-based organisation was placed in administration on 27 October and despite stringent efforts over the last few days to find a buyer and keep the team afloat, they have ultimately come to nothing.

Geoff Rowley, joint administrator at FRP Advisory, said: “It goes without saying that it’s deeply regrettable that a business with such a great following in Britain and worldwide has had to cease trading and close its doors.”

Rowley added: “Whilst the team made significant progress during its relatively short period of operation, operating a F1 team requires significant ongoing investment.

“The group was put into administration last month following a shortfall in on-going funding and the administration process provided a moratorium to allow for attempts to secure a long-term viable solution for the company within a very limited time-frame. Sadly no solution could be achieved to allow for the business to continue in its current form.

Staff were told of their fate in a long and emotional meeting just after midday on Friday. “We would like to thank all the staff for their support during this difficult process,” continued Rowley. “As joint administrators our immediate focus will be to assist staff who have lost their jobs and provide them with the necessary support to submit timely claims to the Redundancy Payments Service.

“The team will not be participating in the two further rounds of the 2014 championship in São Paulo and Abu Dhabi. The joint administrators will continue with their statutory duties to realise the assets of the business in the best interests of all the creditors.”

Fellow strugglers Caterham are also in administration and seeking a buyer. Both teams entered the sport in 2010, encouraged by promises of a cost cap that never materialised.

Marussia did manage to score their first two points at the Monaco Grand Prix in May thanks to Frenchman Jules Bianchi, who is fighting for his life in a Japanese hospital after a horrific crash at Suzuka in October when his car hit a recovery tractor.

Caterham say they will race in Abu Dhabi 14 Nov 2014

Caterham have announced they plan to take part in next weekend’s season-ending 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The team have missed the last two rounds, in the United States and Brazil, due to ongoing financial issues.

“We now head to Abu Dhabi ready to show what a hard-working and positive group of people this is and to hopefully secure a future for the team,” said interim team principal Finbarr O’Connell following a crowdfunding project designed to aid their participation.

“During the past few days the interest of many potential buyers has increased massively and by racing in Abu Dhabi the team will be showcasing itself as a live and functioning team that deserves to continue into 2015 and beyond.”

Caterham have yet to confirm who will be driving for them at Yas Marina. Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericcson have formed their regular 2014 race line-up to date, but the latter - who will race for Sauber next year - announced earlier this week that he has severed all links with the team.

Kobayashi to race for Caterham again

Caterham has announced that Kamui Kobayashi will be part of its line-up when it returns to Formula 1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Kobayashi's former team-mate Marcus Ericsson officially split with Caterham during its recent absence from the F1 field, but the Japanese driver has decided to remain involved.

"I am happy to be racing with the team in Abu Dhabi," said Kobayashi.

"It hasn't been an easy last few weeks, so it will be nice to be back to in the car and work together with the Caterham F1 team members.

"This team is working hard and never gives up. We deserve to be racing in Abu Dhabi and I am very glad we can race again thanks to the crowdfunding project.

"Now it is our turn to show what we can do - we will all try our best during the weekend ahead and hopefully we can end the season with a positive result for the future of this team."

The identity of Kobayashi's team-mate remains unclear.

Jules Bianchi: Injured Formula 1 driver 'out of coma'

Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi is no longer in an artificial coma and is breathing unaided, his parents have said in a statement.

The Marussia driver, 25, was seriously injured when he crashed in wet conditions into a recovery vehicle at the Japanese Grand Prix on 5 October.

The Frenchman has been flown from hospital in Yokkaichi to intensive care in Nice, where he arrived earlier.

However his condition is still "critical" and he remains unconscious.

"Almost seven weeks after Jules' accident at Suzuka Circuit, and following a challenging period of neurological intensive care, we are able to announce Jules has made an important step," his parents Philippe and Christine said in the statement.

"His treatment now enters a new phase concerned with the improvement of his brain function.

"Although the situation continues to be serious, and may remain so, it was decided that Jules was sufficiently stable to be repatriated to his native France."

Bianchi suffered a diffuse axonal injury when he crashed into a recovery vehicle at Suzuka.

His car collided with a tractor vehicle that was recovering Adrian Sutil's Sauber, which had crashed on the previous lap.
