Hansfromdenmark
And we must not forget that as long as they are a part of the European Olympic comitte, they can host. Of course I hoped for something else, but Turkey is actually way better than Russia in my opinion. Many many danes often travel on Holiday in Turkey and can must better reflect to that, and they don´t have a lot of other events, like Russia do... But i still hope for a more western country of course. And because they have a different culture, does that mean they cant host?

Galandar
If nobody in Europe wants it....send it elsewhere. As far as I know Belarus, Turkey and Russia want it but EOC wants to move it somewhere to a western European country. This is why Holland was believed to be a good choice. There are still some other western European options EOC would not like to disclose right now. We will hear the name of the EG 2019 host soon. Galandar
I believe that the European Games is a nice concept for mid-size cities, such as Prague, Budapest, Vienna etc. which once considered Olympic bids. Those cities should definitely go for it. For those, European Games would be a great experience in hosting and organizing an event of a large scale. In the future, EOC should also work on adding the main tournaments of athletics and swimming which would raise up the quality of this event. gotosy
Dates for 2019 European Games confirmed by EOChe 2019 European Games will take place in the final two weeks of June, the European Olympic Committees (EOC) has announced, with five to six sports set to form a core part of the programme for future editions of the event. The dates were confirmed at an EOC Executive Committee meeting in Tirana, Albania, which came after the organisation held a debrief on Baku 2015 in the Italian capital Rome last week. It has been claimed that staging the 2019 Games, which were originally awarded to The Netherlands before the country pulled out due to a lack of support from various sectors of the nation, in the last two weeks in June will “allow European Federations and Europe’s National Olympic Committees more time to align their calendars with the European Games than was possible for the inaugural edition in Baku, Azerbaijan, this summer”. EOC President Patrick Hickey, the brainchild behind the European Games concept, says the announcement will now allow them to finalise discussions with those cities interested in staging the 2019 Games. A number of nations have been mooted as potential hosts for the 2019 event including Turkey, Belarus and Russia with a decision expected to be made in October before being rubber-stamped at the EOC General Assembly in Prague the following month. “Selecting the window for 2019 is a small but symbolic decision,” Hickey said. “After the incredible success of the first edition of the Games, it’s important we give all stakeholders the opportunity to build their calendars for 2019 with the Games in mind, rather than fitting the Games into their existing calendars, as they did for Baku 2015. “Today’s decision also allows us to finalise our discussions with the interested cities for hosting the 2019 Games with concrete dates in mind. “Whilst we are close to concluding our discussions with the potential hosts for 2019 we are also holding conversations with cities about the third edition of the Games in 2023. “It’s an exciting time.” ... http://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1030266/dates-for-2019-european-games-confirmed-by-eoc
LatinXTC
If they were smart they should pick a city for the 2023 games while they're at it next month. You're not giving the cities enough time to prepare for the games, especially when they have venues to be constructed. Cities should have a minimum of 6 years to prepare. gotosy
Russia to host 2019 European Games if they address doping scandalRussia will host the 2019 European Games providing they address the serious doping problems which has led to them being banned, it was announced here today. The Games are expected to be staged in either Kazan or Sochi, following the first-ever edition held in Baku earlier this year. An official announcement had been due to be made by European Olympic Committees (EOC) President Patrick Hickey here today until the publication last week of the report from the World Anti-Doping Agency Independent Commission which found evidence of state-supported doping. That led to the suspension of the All-Russia Athletics Federation by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), putting their participation at Rio 2016 in jeopardy. The scandal appears only to have temporarily halted Russia, however, being chosen to host an event which it was claimed here today was watched by a total of 1.7 million people in 145 countries during Baku 2015. "Russia is still the EOC's preferred partner for hosting the 2019 European Games, that is providing the independent authorities can confirm Russia's ability to support an anti-doping programme that meets the highest international standards," Hickey told delegates, including International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach, attending the 44th EOC General Assembly here. "The Games are four years away and there is real potential here to demonstrate Russia's new robust anti-doping system and clean sport culture through the 2019 European Games. "I believe that Russia can lead from the front in the future." The EOC have been seeking a country to host the event since The Netherlands, who had planned to hold the Games in several cities, including Amsterdam, had withdrawn on the eve of Baku 2015. Alexander Zhukov, President of the Russian Olympic Committee, addressed the 50 National Olympic Committees present for the meeting and once again promised to solve the doping issue to ensure the country will host the event. "The next European Games can become even more attractive," he told them. "The key to this success will be reach agreement with sports Federations to so every sport is a qualifying competition for the Olympic Games [at Tokyo 2020]." ... http://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1031835/russia-to-host-2019-european-games-if-they-address-doping-scandal
yoshi
Well that's a good choice in the circumstances - gives Russia an incentive to clean up & a chance to be tested & demonstrate any new systems. Plus it keeps the games (which are still a good idea) going - although not sure if they'll help make it palatable to the likes of the Dutch. LatinXTC
Ugh this just looks awful. I know Russia is the only one right now wanting the games, but it almost looks like they're being rewarded by bad behavior. And 1.7 million people in 145 countries watched the first European games??? Please tell me that number is wrong, because right now that's an average of less than 12,000 people per country lol! Well if they have no choice than to go to Russia for 2019, then so be it. I just hope that if they were smart (which they're not) Russia would choose Kazan over Sochi as host since Kazan already has an athletics stadium fully capable of hosting an event like the European games. They also have all the brand new venues they just built for that Universiade they hosted. AFAIK Sochi has no athletics stadium so they would have to build that from scratch. Giving the European Games to Russia shows that there is no real alternative/interest in this outside a few certain countries. EOC should give up on that idea really. yoshi
But it should work. Asia has one, Americas have one, Africa has one. What's so special about a European multi sport event that makes it so hard? I think Glasgow should've gone for it, somewhere that size would be perfect for it. In all honesty a carrot and stick approach is probably for the best. But this will not endear the games to the countries of the Eurozone. But it should work. So there is no need for Glasgow to host the "dictator games" when they are already hosting the European Sports Championships in 2018. Nacre
It looks like Russia will not host this after all. It's been years since I tried learning Russian and I never got any better than being able to order pastries, so I'm afraid an online translator will have to do: Google translate of: http://allsportinfo.ru/index.php?id=102444 Russia will not hold the European Games 2019 The Executive Committee of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) back in November 2015 announced that the only candidate for the second European game in 2019 is - Russia. Member of the executive committee of the EDC Russian Alexander Kozlovsky called even probable candidate cities for the Games - Kazan and Sochi. But Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko (pictured) said the special correspondent of the Agency of sport information "All Sport" Victor Limasovu that Russia just will not apply for the holding of these competitions. "There is no European games in 2019 in our country will not - said Mutko. - Firstly, the calendar of the largest sporting events in Russia have long been painted. Secondly, there are a number of reasons, which is inappropriate to apply to carry out such large-scale complex competitions - that the current economic situation and the political situation. EDC representatives can express their personal opinion, any suggestions. But I repeat: this competition, we will not be carried out accurately. " First European summer games were held in 2015 in Baku (Azerbaijan). Between doping scandals, low oil and high steel prices, and then financial troubles this is hardly surprising. LatinXTC
Well then, who's up? How about Barcelona? They have a track and field stadium that doesn't have a permanent tenant AFAIK so that's the biggest obstacle out of the way right there. It still has a lot of venues still in existence from the Olympic games they held in 1992. They still have both swimming and diving venues, with one being at about 4k capacity and the other at 3k capacity, but if they want a bigger venue for swimming they can always put it in Palau Sant Jordi like they did for the 2013 World Aquatics Championships. The coast is right there so beach volleyball, sailing, open water swimming, and the triathlon can be hosted right there. The opening and closing ceremony can take place in Camp Nou, OR if they want to be more conservative in capacity there's always the 40k capacity Estadi Cornella-El Prat in the outskirts of Barcelona, or have it at the Olympic stadium. And there are sure to be enough smaller outdoor fields as well as indoor fields for them to host. Hell Barcelona seems to be the perfect place to throw a last-minute Olympic-style event. Or even Madrid could also host as well. They have plenty of sports venues. Not sure if they have a swimming and diving venue, but last I remember they were still going to be built even if they lost the bid for the 2020 Olympics. The biggest challenge would be the athletics stadium, but if they could temporarily renovate the Vicente Calderon Stadium into an athletics stadium similar to the stadium at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Fans of the stadium would probably appreciate it as well, since it will keep the stadium from being demolished for another 3 years since the current tenant will be moved into recently renovated La Peineta stadium. Nacre
There are lots of cities that could host. Stockholm, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Vienna, etc. Europe already has other Olympic qualification tournaments, though, so whoever bids wants to host a major event for its own sake.
