Hi. Can I be you please? :D That is a fantastic logo!!! I'm speechless!!

How time catches up! Okay, I've ventured out of the post-Christmas torpor to update progress. Only a bit over four days to go now to get those last logos or revisions locked in!

Some really great late entries coming in! Just a bit of housekeeping and comment (before I head off to watch Hobbits):

Victor Mata: Fair enough if you wanna withdraw it. I'll take it as such unless you change your mind, but for what it's worth, I think it was a really strong application and development of the branding. Okay, the originality aspects are diminished somewhat in my view as well, but I would have accepted it as a legitimate concept bringing the existing iconography forward (in a retro way).

alphacarter: Which final version of your Toronto logo are you going with? The rings in colour, or in mono?

Danny: I like both of those - maybe your original one a bit more. Do let me know what the final one is you'll go ahead with.

USAandItalia: Ditto as with Danny. I was a bit sorry to see the elephant go.

In about 48 hours, I'll post up what I'm assuming are the preliminary finalists' fields in both categories to go through to the short list vote just to check I've got everyone's preferred final versions right and to ensure I haven't left any out. The comp will still be open after that though for final entries right up until the clock strikes 2014 in Sydney.

Yeah. The elephant was cool! I'll see what I can do. I should have a logo by Saturday!

Great logo, but I'd be very surprised if this is not completely inspired by the Gold Coast 2018 logo- to the point where that logo uses GC's iconic Q1 tower as the pinnacle, in a similar way to the CN Tower.

yes, i see it. except this is better in every way. anyway who said the concept - as opposed to the design - had to be original?

Inspired by one of my favourite buildings -

rom_2.jpg

The Michael Lee Chin 'Crystal' at the Royal Ontario Museum.

Just using MS Paint -

Evoking the imagery of a mountain as well as a pinnacle - recognisable and yet abstract.

If anyone would like to clean it up/make it better - please do!

Thank you, Rols, but I'm afraid people may see my entry as plagiarism and unfortunately I'm a very short of time to brainstorm into a new concept. In these conditions I'm very behind every other great quality submissions we have this year, so I'm out. Good look to all the competitors. I've already decided my vote!

Thank you, Rols, but I'm afraid people may see my entry as plagiarism even though I justified the use of classic canadian design elements. Well given the way others have been pulled up for it in this thread, where do we draw the line? Simply pointing out that this logo veers very close (at worst) to plagiarising the GC18 logo.

But using the tower in the centre is just one idea in the logo. Aismanggo was also able to capture the Skydome (will never be known as the Rogers Centre in my eyes) which is also a significant part of the Toronto skyline, as well as the twin City Hall buildings to the right. Not to mention the lake, which plays an important part in Toronto life. Like krow said, even if the idea was copied (which I'm not certain either way), it was expanded into something different.

sorry to interrupt.. for me the other one logo is more like using other person artwork without changing colour or redesign it back..thats is a plagiarism,..i dont want to pointing to anyone.. but there is a different between plagiarism n taking inspiration

Rols, I'll go with my first entry of Bangkok, forget the second entry, please =]

Okay then. I'm sure it's tough when you have to choose between two good babies of your own.

...

Okay, my two cents worth re: plagiarism versus inspiration

Where does one draw the line? Good question and exactly why I'm loathe to rule too heavily on the issue. That said, if something was a straight lift of some other work, well, I think you'd have to disallow it, of course.

Now, as regards this year's entrants that have drawn such contention, IMO:

Yes, Scotguy's original veered all too close to that line. To be charitable, it was developed from the original... slightly. But I figured Scotty would recognise that once the accusation was out there, it'd no doubt kill a lot of support. An appeal to both good nature and self interest.

Victor's, as I explained above, to me was more ambiguous. Yes, the main graphical element was indeed a straight lift, but his use of it, and the typography and design elements, I thought created a totally original feel and context. It worked IMO. That said, he's probably right in realising it probably handicapped him for votes.

For Yoshi's Sapporo redux, well, it wasn't exact, you could see he'd done it all himself from scratch, and I'm inclined to think it was a totally inadvertent or subliminal double up. I did the same thing a few years ago in one of the old bid plan contests of Pups'. I submitted Cairo and did about the only logo I've ever done in a GamesBids comp that I was halfway pleased with. It was the Egyptian hieroglyphic eye, but Puppy quickly pointed out it was exactly Cairo's one from the All-African games (I think i was). I really didn't set out to copy it consciously, but it must have been a subconscious inspiration in my mind.

And finally aismanggo's. Similar concept to GC2018's, yes. But to my mind very differently executed - aismanggo's more delicately and thoughtfully, and arguably better. I think it's really stretching it a lot to suggest copying.

Apart from a glaring and undeveloped rip-off I think it's fair enough that everyone here gets to choose how to factor in their own personal equation of originality versus execution versus aesthetics in making up their minds on who to vote for.

In that case, can I enter that Toronto logo Rols? I certainly didn't consciously think of Sapporo. And my other idea is impossible to do in Inkscape (by me anyway). I'll be putting my Bangkok logo up later.

PS: I look forward to watching the fireworks in Sydney to mark the end of the logo comp window on Tuesday :P

Rols, the top one will be my submission logo. The other three are variations of colour theme - Canadian red, Ontario blue and T.O dawnhgko.jpg

Rols and guys, those are my final entries, I swear.

I made some minor adjustments (color, vectors) to my Toronto 2026 logo and changed the lettering of Bangkok 2028 logo.

*edit* I just fixed something about the "o" in Bangkok.

Danny, with those tweaks your Toronto logo is one of the best I've seen in any of these comps. Absolutely love it. Snow, maple leaf, fireworks, cauldron, ski tracks..so much in there but it stays cohesive. B)

and maybe a flower bouquet too, like those winners won in the podium

Thank you for the words

Right then, Bangkok:

So I based the whole thing on the brushstroke bit of Inkscape, as I thought it made a good font

Postimage b*s*a*d  Rols, make it bigger please. Oh, why is it grey? It needs a white background

Here's the best I can get it. Still a bit rough, but I've gotta go out most of the day, so maybe someone else might be able to lend a hand to polish it.

Yoshi, I think postimage creates a small thumbnail from PNGs (which is what you posted). If you post the direct link you get the original.

Here it is resized and as a jpg...
