Nacholympic
Why do they keep turning it on?! The games haven't started yet!!!!!! Eternal testing... As the Torch relay have suffered a variety of fails, they don't want that karma in the official cauldron....

mr.bernham
It seems an outside cauldron has been planned for a long time: Also it appears that some city apps haven joined the Sochi fun and created exact replicas of the park and it's venues: Megapolis (Even the Cauldron and fountain, oh and yes when the game is playing you have an "opening ceremonies")
runningrings
I've always thought something like a "Sim Olympics" would be a fantastic game to play.

mr.bernham
Been wondering this for a long time; what are those colored strips near the top of the cluster for? There foot bridges for spectators. Yeah, I completed the construction of the Fisht Olympic Stadium aswell, I'm level 46 on Megapolis, and Level 21 on Generosity. Nice! I think I'm around the same level wise and 26 or higher on Generosity. I really do like the app, maybe come Rio 2016 they will add a Summer Games... 4seasonscentre
The flame was lit for testing during the national newscast (CTV) here in Canada. They didn't bother to put up some tarp like in Vancouver.
Olympian2004
I think it would simply have been too difficult to put up a tarp - the cauldron seems to be significantly higher than Vancouver's, plus it will be lit via a fuse from the stadium, so you had to fence off the whole area between stadium and cauldron. nobase2010
The Sochi's cauldron is basically a very simplified design of the mythological firebird. The neck and it's head is sticking out of the ground while the wings is forming the pool.

That's why in Athens, they added that red centaur afterwards so that the viewer got a correct or exaggerated scale of things.

Olympian2004
Baron was talking about the Allegory segment in Athens (=the segment in which those torso statues appeared and broke into shards on which they projected those different images symbolising mankind), not the cauldron lighting. Ozkar
Athens 2004 is my favorite Opening Ceremony up to date... the way it was all conected using the water, rocks, (props) was an innovation. The music, camera shots etc... not to mention the announcers in Greek, French, English...
