"The iconic Medeu speedskating arena is supposed to be covered and used both for sport and opening and closing ceremonies."

It's understandable that an Almaty bid would want to highlight the legacy of Medeo, but it would be unfortunate if they were indeed to press ahead with talk of enclosing the facility. Fortuneately, that does not seem practical. Perhaps it would be possible to use the stadium for ceremonies if temporary seats can be added and the transportation concerns can be addressed. But, in that case, they should be outdoor ceremonies, such that, after the Games, the stadium can again be used as an open-air recreational facility.

OK, so basically all the venues proposed by Almaty are "existant", and don't even require permanent jobs?

Logo is nice, but it's an apple. Again...

Sorry, I've checked once again.

I'm appalled at how primitive and poorly put together the application file is. It looks like something a high school student did at the last minute. The venue plans are ill thought out and it's just a mess. Before I thought they would be second in the voting and I know politics and $$ are at play but I wouldn't send them on to a Candidate City phase. If they do get that far, they have a TON of work to do in putting the bid book together to make sure it's presentable. As it stands right now I'd have them eliminated before the Candidate City phase.

Really? I thought their's was one of the best files. Very informative and descriptive, fantastic maps as well. Not to mention the fact that these games would have a far lower budget than the other cities, and they have been on top of all their dates (plus they have shown extreme commitment) makes me positive they will be a candidate city.

Have to agree with ktoles here. It looks half assed. Pardon my French. Some of the questions were sloppily answered.. The maps were straight from Google maps, so it shows that they "cheated" rather than attempt to render/draw their own maps or at the most use Google maps as a guide.

The charts (venue ones etc) are like the old format and take up 2 pages (in landscape format no less).

Sloppy at best, which is a shame, considering that they have such a nice logo.

They will make a Candidate city, but needs more work, on paper at least.

Is one of the ice hockey venues actually an outdoor stadium that will have to be enclosed?

No, a major arena is planned. Women's Ice Hockey at an existing venue at 5,000 and a new Curling Arena at 3,000. The Figure Skating/Speed Skating oval will only be additional at 12,000.

The Central Stadium will host ceremonies, Medeu, will host speed skating.

So, for the past two springs, Denis Ten has put together a figure skating show called "Denis Ten and Friends," with stops in Almaty and Astana.

It appears to be one of the best casts put together for this type of show in years and years. This year's cast includes: Mao Asada, Mirai Nagasu, Evan Lyscaek, Maxim Trankov & Tatiana Volosozhar, Carolina Kostner, Brian Joubert, Stephane Lambiel, Daisuke Takahashi, Nathalie Pechalat & Fabian Bourzat, and more. It's a charity show and the money is going toward the development of figure skating in Kazakhstan. Not only does the show have a sick cast, they appear to be showing the skaters a really good time and they've all been instagramming beautiful pictures of Kazakhstan. Anyway, it seems like a real PR coup for Kazakhstan in the figure skating world. Apparently they're hoping to commit a lot of money to the development of the sport... I'll add that Denis Ten seems to be pretty savvy with business/PR matters.

Timur Dosymbetov, the secretary general of the Kazakh National Olympic Committee and the head of the bidding campaign "Almaty-2022", gave an interview to Itar-Tass.

http://www.zakon.kz/4638167-gensek-nok-kazakhstana-pri-podgotovke-k.html The article is in Russian, but there are some interesting statements (translated by Google):

In preparation for the 2022 Games we will take into account all developments made by Sochi

"All the achievements Sochi, we'll take into consideration in the preparation for the Games in 2022, if we win the right to be the Olympic capital - said Dosymbetov.

- I have very good relations with the leaders of many of the Russian Federation in winter sports. We have established excellent rapport with the Russian Olympic Committee, the organizing committee "Sochi-2014". I am familiar with the head of the organizing committee, Dmitry Chernyshenko since when Russia and Kazakhstan were fed at one time bid to host the 2014 Games. Kazakh Olympians in Sochi felt very comfortable because there many organizational issues resolved promptly. I note that at the last Olympics to all sports delegations had a great attitude. Kazakhstan but in my opinion, I felt most comfortable in Sochi. "

Interlocutor ITAR-TASS added that the construction and reconstruction of sports facilities before the Games 2022 will be held by Russian specialists, who received a lot of experience in the preparation for the Games in Sochi. "I note that the organizing committee" Sochi-2014 "worked a lot of citizens of Kazakhstan and all the knowledge gained there they use already in preparation for the home Olympics - continued Dosymbetov. - Russian company that built in Sochi sports facilities, hotels and roads will also be invited in Almaty. easier for us to negotiate with the Russians, the more that binds our country single customs space. "

The rest of the interview is just sucking-up to Alexander Zhukov.

So much about "cheap" Games in Almaty. If they get to work with the same Russians responsible for the Sochi cost explosion, this can hardly go well.

Almaty was never going to be a cheap games. That's just the fantasy of one poster here trying to justify why the games should go to Kazakhstan.

Interesting fact:

Almaty Olympic Park isn't really based in Almaty. It's planned in Talgar District, just outside the city limits.

They don't violate any rules, obviously, but I think it's quite uncommon to place Olympic Park outside the anchor city?
