Japan Olympic Committee conducts online poll on artists for Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony

While preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are already beginning, one burning question on (maybe) everybody’s mind is, “Who will perform at the opening ceremonies seven years from now?” Okay, maybe not everyone is prioritizing that exactly, but theJapan Olympic Committeeconducted a survey asking which Japanese acts people would like to see representing the nation’s culture and music during the ceremony, which serves as a major point for the world’s biggest sporting event.

Many were surprised at the results, especially at the fact that J-pop’s arguably best-selling group right now, AKB48, was only at number 7. Topping the list was Southern All Stars, a long-time pop rock band that started in the mid-70s. Some netizens’ reactions to that was surprise at the fact that they’re still around. J-pop group Arashi, 14-member boy band EXILE, 90s boy band SMAP (“Sports Music Assemble People”, which may be a bit more apt for the Olympics, name-wise) and folk duo Yuzu were ranked 2-5, with the aforementioned AKB48 at 7 and pop superstar Hikaru Utada at 8.

Some commenters were disappointed at the fact that so many J-pop acts were in there, which they say will make Japan an “international laughing-stock”. There were some who also jokingly (or maybe they were actually serious) said that maybe they should’ve also includedvocaloids, or singing voice synthesizers, since Japan should showcase both the music and their technological capability. Still some said this was just the JOC testing the waters since it’s still too early to decide on things like that and the fact that the musical evolution might change by the time 2020 is upon us. Who knows, maybe by that time you’ll have a whole bunch of singing and dancing robots as your worldwide pop superstars, which isn’t really that far off.

Please no necroposting. Also comment on the proper Tokyo 2020 subforum since this one is pretty much dead.

Either way, you can tell Japan wants to put aside traditionalism for these Olympics and want to go all out with what has really made them popular and liked on the last decade which is their pop culture. I wouldn't be surprised anymore if we get Anime transition videos during the Opening done by certain popular studio (Ghibli/Madhouse anyone?)

However I would calm down the J-Pop and give it more room for the closing ceremony. Specially when it's obvious Korea is going to overexploit their K-Pop next year, its going to feel repetitive and too soon.

...except for the Olympic tradition of doubling or tripling (or more) the bid budget......that is one tradition the Japanese are going out of their way to honor.

And then you get C-pop in 2022.

There was the suggestion of Takashi Miike as the director of the Opening Ceremony - If so, that would be really bollocks. But then having Hayao Miyazake is too wonderful to leave aside.

^^ Really? Where did you read that? Also Miyazaki has very low chances of doing this, considering he wanted to retire from everything.

For those who dont know, Takashi Miike is a japanese movie filmaker know for making live action adaptations of many Anime as well for some controversial films (not sure if you heard of Ichi the Killer). He's currently doing an adaptation of Jojo Bizarre Adventure (the Diamond is Unbreakable arc). It would be a weird choice for director, then again many of us thought the same of Danny Boyle back in 2012.

Miike's rumor was mentioned in few forums on Internet. No serious yet.

But related to Miyazaki, with the recent announcement of a new final film, there were news of Tokyo OC courting Miyazaki since last year.

A group of Japanese engineers are aiming to launch the world's smallest flying car, the Skydrive, in time for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Designed by Cartivator, a Tokyo- and Toyota City-based non-profit run by a team of 30 volunteers, the three-wheeled Skydrive car is powered by four rotors and uses drone technology. The car aims to deliver a seamless transition from driving to flight.

The team's "first target" is to build the flying car and use it to light the Olympic flame at Tokyo's 2020 Summer Olympics.

w/b Davey! This forum needs more posters like you at the moment!

That news is actually a few months old and looks to me to be nothing more than a sneaky bit of ambush marketing. It looks like Toyota cheekily planting the idea of this car lighting the Olympic flame in their press release has had the desired effect. Journalists who write pieces based on nothing but corporate press releases have lapped it up, attaching headlines like "Flying Car Could Light Tokyo Olympic Flame in 2020" and people have then shared the articles. Free advertising 101.

Nothing from the Tokyo 2020 organising committee there though.

Flying car?  But we already have this here.  (Also, in the fictional Ulan Bator 2020 Puppy and I conceived, oh, eons ago, a space shuttle bringing back the Olympic flame from an intergalactic tour was going to crash into the UB cauldron and light it.  So, I/we were light years ahead of this hokey Jap idea.
