How about PARTY TOWN USA!

tumblr_lob28cwBqe1qlnfp6o1_500.jpg

Las Vegas is a tourist trap without a large amount of permanent residents. It's why none of the pro sports leagues in the United States have a team there. Las Vegas obviously has a ton of hotels and they actually have more sports venues than we sometimes give them credit for. But it would be a terrible place for an Olympics. They get enough people to come there and spend their money anyway. An Olympics, for what it would cost to build all that unnecessary infrastructure, is hardly going to be a boon for the city over the large flocks of tourists that come there without the draw of an Olympics.

To be fair (not that I think a LV Olympics is a good idea in the least), the Las Vegas city limits are more populous than Atlanta. It's only in metro area that Atlanta eclipses Vegas.

Also, the foreign visitors to America that I've met have been far more interested in visiting Las Vegas than Atlanta. (I'm looking up official statistics and LV is the seventh-most visited American city behind NYC, LA, Miami, Orlando/Disney, San Francisco, and Honolulu.) So yeah, it might be a tourist trap, but at least it's appealing to outsiders.

A 2 million population city is not big enough?

It has an incredibly amount of sports infrastructure, more hotels than you can imagine, enough hookers to keep any of the viagra popping IOC members happy, and a fair few billionaires that help fund the games and infrastructure.

What would be Las Vegas' narrative, though? "This is where Prince Harry comes to let loose!"

Like Orlando (which some people on here also tout from time to time) are mainly tourist meccas that don't inspire anything Olympic about neither. Sure, both have a big airport, the hotels & the entertainment. But beyond that, they're just places where many just go to forget their everyday lives for a week or two. Nothing really compelling about that at all.

You have 10 existing spaces plus 4 arenas on/near the strip alone that could host everything but aquatics, athletics, rowing/canoe/kayak/sailing, equestrian and shooting.

That's the thing.. what exactly are those billionaires going to get out of it? Tourists already come to Las Vegas in large numbers. Building the infrastructure needed for an Olympics isn't exactly going to improve on that. Let them build more hotels (and more expensive hotels at that) which will be money-makers year round. Not a stadium that's going to cost a billion dollars and will probably be barely able to generate any real revenue once the Olympics are gone. Hardly a smart investment.

Downsize the stadium and use it for UNLV. And they could get government grants, tax breaks and new hotel/convention/sports space. Also Vegas tourism and revenue are down and it is now second best to Cotai Strip. An Olympics could change the image of Vegas and provide for a new opportunity to grow and develope.

Party in the U.S.A. with Olympic ambassador Miley Cyrus!

What do the billionares get out of it? Ego.

Vegas has (or is building) enough infrastructure to serve as most venues. They lack the things everybody lacks - athletics, cycling and aquatics. They'd probably send sailing to San Diego.

Of course, Vegas does have 40C temperatues in August. But it's a dry heat :)
