Paris 2024

Recommended Posts

Am I the only one that doesn't think Coe is that charismatic? He's always struck me as quite cold and even abrasive.

Sometimes yes. But he's a very good speaker and from London's POV obviously knew the ins and outs of the IOC very well. I doubt that's changed. I think any bid would benefit from his vast experience.

You're right, and I have no doubt that he would have invaluable knowledge for Paris. My criticism was more levelled at how he's come across in the media a number of times.

That said - is it clear yet how many of the Paris 2012 people are back for the 2024 bid? Might be better with a fresh crop.

.....with a tendency to confuse his personnal finances with those of LOCOG!

Yes. You're right. Seeing the Olympic flame burning in the Greek sky in a Calatrava designed cauldron would have been completely dull.

It truly was. I mean he had designed the new roof so tight -- so what was left? A slender thing that would bend down (big deal) and be thin enough so that it didn't burn his ornate roof. It was sleek and economical and I wish so was their economy.

Where else could they have placed it?

Um...Athens stadium is the most beautiful thing ever and their ceremony was the best of any games before or since! :P;)

Of course you mean.."favorite," not "best." There is NO Best - because each person has the one that's appealed to them.

To me, it was a very cold and austere ceremony, which considering it took them more than a century to get them back -- where was the celebratory joy that should've pervaded the show? Where was the exultation? None. It was all one man's ego trip -- to show . . . oh look, see how good my designs are. And that whole Klepsydra segment wasn't entirely original:

- He copied it from the celebration of the Persian empire at the Shah's 1971 party at Persepolis; and

- they do this tableaux vivants every year at the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, CA since 1933 --

except he (Papaioannu) had them on platforms. So again, big deal.

Came across this the other day. A very early concept of what a Paris Olympics might look like. I know some potential venues have been discussed such as Grand Palais for fencing and of course the Stade de France. What caught my attention was the Arena 92, the new stadium for Racing Metro, being used for gymnastics and weightlifting. To do so would require a retractable roof. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Racing Metro scrapped plans for the retractable roof based on rising costs.

Can't we put more than 2 venues in a big stadium like Arena92?

I would say 3....half-stadium for gymnastics, quarter-stadium for weightlifting and another quarter-stadium for a third venue.

You can -- but for crowd, safety and emergency access reasons, the IOC doesn't like them too close together or even having competition times running simultaneously. The point is NOT to crowd too many people in one area at the same time -- thereby also reducing the attraction for would-be terrorists to hit one particular, unsecured place at one time with so many people waiting to be potential collateral damage.

Well if you theoretically add up the attendance for three such events you are far from the crowd of the Olympic Stadium or the football stadium so I am not really convinced.

Curious they don't mention Charléty Stadium for instance for hockey. 20000 seats so it should be ok.

I aggree, it wouldn't make so much people

The reason might be that it is needed a second gymnastics area for training.

Charléty is a horrible place for all sports except Athletics, it's oval and the stands are far away from the pitch. + There's no space next to it for a second field (which Hockey needs)

Why is a second field needed?

It's curious because it is not needed for football or rugby...

I've checked in Tokyo 2020 venues table. 2 hockey fields are needed for the competition (2 matches at the same time).

But do they need to be located at the same place?

I aggree Charlety stadium is not the right place because the stands are very far.

But why not Jean Bouin Stadium for the main hockey field? (20000 seats very closed to the field)

And in that case, rugby could be located in the Olympic Stadium (2 days during the first week) like Tokyo 2020.

I believe field hockey uses artificial turf.

I don't know, maybe because it's more practical for everyone (the media covering the competition for example)

I don't think having Rugby Sevens in the Stade de France is a good idea, it would be more challenging logistically to convert the stadium for Opening Ceremony mode to Rugby mode then to Track and Field mode (+ same problem of seats too far from the pitch if Rugby hosted at Stade de France in T&F mode)

The current plan is to have Hockey in a purpose-built venue (probably temporary) in the North of Paris, close to the Olympic Village.

You may be right!

Bellow, it is written it takes 80 hours to move from Rugby mode to Athletics mode....
