Yeah, I admit. Hamburg does seem at the moment to me more likely to bid than Berlin. That may or not pan out, it may be tough for Hamburg to win if they do, and maybe I'm coloured by my desire to see CAF's hometown in the bidding spotlight, but I think they're the keenest of the German contenders at this point of time.

Rendering of the Olympic stadium (stade de France) and the aquatic center.

Because Baron.

I should've just written "Germany." Will be curious to see if either city emerges as a candidate. Personally, I'm still stuck on the idea of Winter Games in Munich. German Summer Games aren't grabbing me the same way.

I wonder if Koalas are <grin>

Honestly I would like to see both, though a summer games excites me a tad more.

It would be nice to see what Berlin and Hamburg could bring to the table.

I fear you (and me and many others) will be stuck in vain forever :-((

Reading on Twitter that French PM has said no to a 2024 bid, backing the 2025 Expo bid instead.

Good lord, just like Toronto . Who are the idiots pushing for the World Expo? 1904 called, they want their event back.

I TOLD YOU SOO, That France will not make an bid for the 2024 SOPG and like how I was right with the 2022 race saying it will be an race between Almaty Kazakhstan and Beijing China at the very beginning of the race.

2024 really is looking wide open for some city to swoop in and win against an easy field.

France won't bid.

The UK just hosted.

Madrid won't bid.

Germany probably won't bid if they are going to host Euro 2024.

China won't be an option if they host in 2022, nor are Japan or South Korea realistic.

Toronto won't bid.

So . . . Istanbul vs Los Angeles? Maybe Melbourne or St Petersburg?

Don't be silly. It'll be all about Doha vs Baku. Unless Tehran and Perth step in at the last minute.

There's still the question of Rome & South Africa, though. And considering that the 2024 deadline is about a year away, I'd say that it'd be a wee bit premature to call the race an 'easy field'.

A couple of years before the 2022 deadline, everyone was predicating a "packed field". Isn't that very laughable now in hindsight. So until the 2024 deadline has come & gone, who really knows for sure at this point. Could be the exact opposite as far as we all know. Some of those places you listed still have the time & the option to change their minds.

I doubt South Africa will bid or even win. The IOC would be a fool to bring them to South Africa.

But who knows what will happen, maybe Paris will jump in along with Toronto at later dates. Aren't the French elections next year?

Yeah, but again, until the 2024 applicant deadline has come & gone, none of us know for sure. After agenda 2020 in a couple of months, would also paint a clearer picture for some of these countries whether or not to proceed with any 2024 plans.

And for someone who was/is championing Kazahkstan, you're not really one to gauge what or wouldn't make the IOC "foolish".

Toronto's going to have a new Council and Mayor by the end of the month, so who knows, we might see a 180 after they get a look at the prospective 2024 field. What Toronto needs is Bitove or someone from MLSE to jump in and push for a bid. After all, the study conducted by the city last year did reccomend one.

And get the clowns of the economic development committee.

Has Paris even expressed interest even going for 2025 from the local government?

Yeah seriously. It's a shame Leiweke is leaving too, he and Bitove could've formed a good team. Leiweke will probably lead the LA bid.

I'm surprised the French are going to pass up 2024. They would be obvious favourites so I'm scratching my head at them going for Expo instead.

Do you really think it will be brought up again this year after the executive committee voted no. Has John Tory publicly given his stance on going forward with an Olympic bid? Out of the 3 main candidates he seems most likely to back a 2024 bid. There's no way Doug Ford will back it if he's elected mayor. Olivia Chow I'm not so sure about either but she ain't gonna win anyways

I'm not championing them, I do think that Almaty would be cheaper all around, but I do not think they will host and do not really prefer them over Beijing with a great margin.

Now as for what countries will do I think the US is bound to bid at this point, but I hope Toronto bids as well. Europe is a toss up.

Why surprised? During the last 18 months or so, the interest among European countries to host has seriously declined, even where there were obvious faves (Munich, Oslo). It's just not seen as attractive to host anymore.

The difference is that popular referendums are causing bids to drop, but people are never going to take to the streets in favor of hosting and make a government in a country like France or Germany bid for the games. It's not impossible, I suppose. But it has never happened in the past.

South Africans seem to believe that the World Cup was an economic mistake but perhaps worth it to show how far the country has come.

http://www.africareview.com/Special-Reports/South-Africa-World-Cup-advice-to-Brazil/-/979182/2343406/-/81mcwc/-/index.html

http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2013/jan/18/south-africa-africa-cup-of-nation

There's no reason to host another event simply to prove themselves capable of hosting. It seems uncertain (perhaps even unlikely) the public will be any more in favor of an Olympic boondoggle than European countries given the fact that many citizens in South Africa are questioning the expense of the World Cup. Obviously I have no idea whether South Africa will bid, but there's no reason to believe they -or Rome- will.

Come to that I'm still not certain even the USA will bid. Los Angeles is tricky to predict because if they able to fund the games with private money they are going to be tough to beat . . . but if the plan ends up costing lots of taxpayer money it may very well be stillborn.

My point is not that any of these cities won't bid. I just think it's very likely that it will be a weak field. The IOC probably isn't going to have their pick of four or five great plans.

Good lord, just like Toronto . Who are the idiots pushing for the World Expo? 1904 called, they want their event back.

In fairness the world's fairs usually leave a better legacy than the Olympics. It's a lot easier to design a positive legacy when a city can pick and choose what it wants to build than it is for facilities dictated by the sporting federations. Also there is a lot less stigma against using temporary structures.

Incidentally I think the internet and television really did the world's fairs in. Today we can see the world on Youtube and Google street view whenever we want. Back in the 1950's going to the world's fair was a way to see the world that wasn't possible otherwise.

I see Los Angeles USA, Istanbul Turkey, Baku Azerbaijan and Doha Qatar bidding for the 2024 SOPG and Toronto Canada maybe coming back to bid as well in 2024.

I see Baku Azerbaijan beating Istanbul Turkey and Doha Qatar in the bidding race being the runner up to Los Angeles USA. Italy will not bid ad Germany will be bidding for EURO 2024 and instead of the SOPG. So 2024 is very very likely to go to Los Angeles USA and 2028 Summer race could be the battle of Europe.
