Paris 2024

Recommended Posts

It's surprising really, seeing as though Paris would be one of the 'Favourites' to Host the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Also, the Olympics and Paralympics IMO, puts more spotlight onto your City then an Expo does.

What's surprising? Munich would have been the ultra-red hot fave to win 2022, and yet the bid didn't go through due to lack of public support. If Parisiens think in a similar way, it's just another alarm bell ringing in Lausanne, unfortunately...

One thing Paris doesn't need is a glitzy tourism advert. I don't think there's a city that's better known anywhere in the world. If they end up going for the Olympics it won't be for that reason.

But I always get the impression that France has trouble selling itself as a business destination compared with other major cities of its size and clout. It is often seen as bureaucratic and not as business friendly as other places because of its strong trade unions, working hour laws, high tax rates (especially with Hollande as President). I can see why an Expo would be attractive for Paris as it tries to compete with London and the German mega-conurbations for investment and industry.

I don't know if Hollande would be a positive figure for a Paris 2024 Olympic Bid, do you?

If you look the last SoG and WoG have been too expensive to be profitable for Russia, England, Greece... You have already many infrastructures for sports and transports in Paris. Paris doesn't need anything. A new Subway will be build without SoG, new stadiums too (FFR Stadium 82 000 seats, Racing indoor Arena 35 000, Rolland Garros will be modernized and extended, Bercy indoor area too...) Everything will be finished before 2020 (excepted the subway) What Paris could have more with SoG ? And with Football Euro 2016 Stade de France and Parc des Princes will be renovated too.

In 2008 and 2012 the situation was different because all these projects weren't sure.

And last thing, Paris was favorite in 2008 and 2012 without success. In 2024 I can't imagine another country than USA win the race. It's not the time for Paris for SoG. Moreover IOC piss off France several times during the last 15 years.

It's a smart choice to do something else than SoG.

Ehm...What exactly do you mean by "you people" ? Just because one poster doesn't know the UK got its money back after 2012 doesn't mean everybody having the same citizenship ignore it.

For the rest of it, I think we've said it all, I'm glad to learn the "IOC wants to go back to Europe" (and I admire your obvious ability to know what's in the IOC's mind), but we do not want the games, we want to keep our money, period. We're happy developing national infrastructures (already underway) to help our athletes win medals, and we'll be glad to go party wherever the games are held, .

What I am attempting to say is that Paris, and France in general fails to realise that the city and nation could host the games far cheaper than ones before. Tulsa mentioned that many stadiums had been constructed since the 2012 bid, if that's the case Paris will be able to host the games very affordably. I would also argue that by France hosting the games it will show the world that 1. France still is capable of hosting large events, 2. France is an economically smart nation, 3. Provide a model for nations in the EU.

No you were not, 2008 was China's games from the moment they entered the room, 2012 could have been yours, but London provided a stronger legacy not to mention you guys lost by two votes. Sounds to me like the IOC wants you.

Honestly, I don't think continental rotation is at the top of the IOC's priority list right now.

Their reputation is in free fall thanks to the obscenities of Sochi and the travails of Rio. The IOC needs solid, reliable Games that are happy, free from incident and free from excess. That's what's most important. At this stage, I think the continent on which the host city is located is beside the point.

I think Tokyo is that reliable host. That being said, the IOC would be wise to sit through a couple of reliable hosts before diving back into another new frontier experiment, with the likes of Durban, Baku, etc. Paris or some other European city would be perfect for this.

Tokyo's Games are still going to be grandiose and expensive as they attempt to one-up Beijing. Tokyo will do a good job, but I believe their Games will be patterned after the old model of prodigality. The Games will be too expensive for many people to attend because exchange rates are so unfavorable -- Tokyo is the most expensive city in the world.

While I expect the Games to be highly competent, I don't really expect them to feel "fun" or "carefree" and that is what the IOC needs. They probably thought they would get that from Rio, but it's not panning out that way.

On top of all of this, Tokyo 2020 will take place after the vote for 2024, which is held in 2017. Therefore, it won't really offset the problems that are currently arising. I think the issues related to Sochi and Rio will be very much on the IOC members' minds as they vote on a host for 2024.

Give them to the Spaniards. If you really want a European host...

Their applause when we lost 2012 , after they had already derailed us in 1992 under the leadership of a former prosecutor & member of the Franco government, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Antonio_Samaranch ) show they'll probably be glad we're not bidding. And they're craving the games.

As for us, we're done trying, and we're fine. :) And polls, paper articles, seem to show a lil more each day that , along with Frenchy, myself and co. , so are the French people.

See you in 40-50 years?

Have you ever been to Paris? Parisians are not very nice to foreigners -- and that's not just a stereotype talking, it's personal experience.

Have you seen French sports fans in action? The ones at the kayaking in Athens were insufferable.

Why would you want the Games hosted by people who don't want them? Doesn't sound great to me. It's hard enough to stage good Olympics when you DO want them.

Hmm, most Parisians / French people generally are superficial to the point that they will show interest for a tourist only if they lust after him/ her. Which I agree, is lame.

The rest of your post got my agreement.

Seriously ? Do you think London SoG Have been profitable ? The cost has been more high than they expected, the cost for security rose before SoG. Of course London spend less money than Beijing, Sotchi or Rio, but the cost were to high despite the fact than london was less expensive than some other Games. At the moment London has some debts...

France is always able to host large events, we will host Euro Football cup in 2016, with 24 teams is very similar than a world cup, and in Europe it's popular like a world cup...

We don't to host SoG to show we are able to host large events, everybody know than western European countries are able to host when they want this kind of events, like Japan, Usa, Canada and some others countries around the world. World expo could be a better idea, because it's during 6 months, you have more time to make profitable this event and you have a great legacy too. Think to the last World Expo in France we have Tour Eiffel and some other great monuments, the legacy has been higher than with previous SoG in Paris.

I go along with you, parisians are not very friendly, even with other french people... Of course not all parisians are like and it's not like this everywhere in France.

That's right if you don't have a strong support from citizen why IOC would choose this country ?

What's your story with French sports fans ? :D

Let's clear this up...becase neither of you are quite correct....

LOCOG, the organising committee itself, made a modest profit of about £30m. In that sense, the event 'London 2012' was a profit making show.

The cost of the ODA building the venues, infrastructure etc. of course hasn't been directly clawed back. But that money has created a new suburb within London with sport at its core, new greenery, cleaned up canals, and shows no signs of being anything other than a success. The success of the ODA's spending was never going to be measured from short term profit/loss charts but from how the area develops over the coming decades.

So if using London 2012 as a case study bear these two very different facets of the budget in mind.

A BBC report said that the city made billions back from the games.

Never been to Japan but from what I have heard it's possible to go to Tokyo as a tourist on a relatively low budget. I doubt Tokyo would top or even reach the prices of the likes of Oslo or Zurich.

Different people, different experiences and different mentalities. I understand this especially from an American point of view (no offence) but I was actually positively surprised of the treatment I got from Parisians. Granted, most wont be all smiles but with basic courtesy and some French (and yes, they also speak English) you can go quite far. Having said that, I'm not that thrilled about Parisian Olympic Games especially if the people don't even care about it. Only if there was another city in France able to host them...

I would never say ALL Parisians are obnoxious and condescending, but the few I met were. I'm sure there are many delightful exceptions. I did attempt some French and I don't think I generally present myself as an uncultured, entitled American.

The French fans I observed at kayaking and fencing in Athens were incredibly loud. They mocked other competitors and (figuratively speaking) beat their chests quite loudly when their own athletes performed well. They were by far the most "in your face" of all the fans I observed in Athens.

I have never been to Japan, but I have friends who have been to Tokyo and they couldn't believe the prices -- and that was without temporary Olympic inflation.

I was just in Hawaii and marveled at the huge number of Japanese tourists. The locals explained that they come to shop in Honolulu (and often to get married as well) because everything is 50-75% cheaper.

Keep in mind that Parisians aren't just cold to foreigners... they are equally cold to everyone not from Paris, French or not.

As far as obnoxious sports fans go, the French aren't anywhere close to the worst. Not. Even. Close.

And, outside the Olympics, well, here are some Polish football fans. I'll take French fans anyday:http://deadspin.com/crazy-photo-soccer-fan-goes-up-in-flames-1568703646

It's a cultural difference maybe, but usually European Fans and moreover in latin countries like Spain, Italia, France are loudly. Maybe you should go more often in european sports events but it's an ordinary behavior from fans... But now SoG or WoG are less and less popular, and more and more reserved only for a chosen who don't have the habit to go in stadium or classic sport events.

When I'm watching SoG or WoG on my TV the atmosphere is very quiet compare to classic sport events.
