Sir Rols
Insidethegames makes the Paris bid sound like a done deal. More than we here on the most give it credence for yet.
DamC
@DamC if the FN party shows with their 12 towns/cities that they are a real party capable of running government, then 2017 could be a victory for them. They are not the same party they were in 1990 and due to ailing French Economy (which, yes it's not at breaking point, but it is still in very bad shape) they are gaining popularity with the French. They almost got Paris for Lords Sake! They are becoming a bigger power-player in French politics and I see them gaining even more popularity in the coming years. WTF! no they didn't, they have ZERO seats at the city council. The candidate coming second was from the UMP, not the FN...
mr.bernham
Sorry, I meant UMP.
Frenchy
Sorry, I meant UMP. You obviously know s#@t all about France and Paris. BTW Marine Le Pen hasn't got an ice cube's chance in hell of ever winning a presidential election......
mr.bernham
Sorry Frenchy, most of my French news comes from 'The local' so I'm not too familiar with the politics yet. My above comments were my recent impressions after the local elections. Could you clear some things up for me? If I'm right then Marine Le Pen's party is far right and Hollands is the Socialist party. The country just got a new Prime-Minister who seems to be a bit of a hot head and has some people in the Socialist party that do not like him. Le Pen's party has been trying to create a good image for themselves after the elections of 1990 which apparently was a disaster. As of now Hollands approval rating has gone down which set the seen for Le Pen's victory in the locals. Is their any more I should know? JMarkSnow2012
Wait i just checked and Le Pen's party is the FN, what the hell is the UMP? Frenchy
Wait i just checked and Le Pen's party is the FN, what the hell is the UMP? General de Gaulle's political offspring or if you prefer "Sarkozy's lot"! Sorry Frenchy, most of my French news comes from 'The local' so I'm not too familiar with the politics yet. But please stop confusing Sarkozy's UMP party with Marine le Pen's FN. Two entirely different kettles of fish....
baron-pierreIV
How about Brigitte Bardot's party and Jean-Paul Belmondo's? I missed the last party of Brigitte and Jean-Paul. Carla said she would meet me there.
mr.bernham
So Sarkozy is UMP and Marie Le Pen is FN. Got it! Thanks Frenchy!
Roger87
I came late of the discussion. First, the UMP and FN are two different parties. The UMP is more known as the traditional "center-right" European party, while the FN is a far-right wing with a clear ideology of political protectionism and anti-globalism. Now, with Manuel Valls as a prime minister it will be interesting the next action of the presidency. Valls is known as a "right-wing" man inside the PS. Also 2005 is a different world then the current in 2014 France is going down the tubes now economy weak government and more mess to be made by the government of France in the next coming years and o course France could be lead by La Pen from 2017 - 2027 which will be more bad news for an France bid, Italy new Prime Minister does not support an Olympics Games bid so Berlin Germany will be the leading city for the 2024 games in Europe Germany has an strong government and economy in a better shape then the USA and Berlin Germany games will be magical games an great games and 35 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and 1st games in the United Germany. Or you are trolling us or your "political knodlegde" is clear as Fox News. Beside all the excellent points remarking by others, let's say hipotetically, Marine Le Pen won the 2017 presidential elections. The remaining question will be: How will she came to power? Maybe she wins the Presidential elections, but she needs the support inside the National Assembly, and that's exactly the weakness of FN. In most Semi-Presidential and Presidential regimes, the presidential elections are separate of the Legislative ones -Different of the Parlamentarian regimes-. Normally, the big winner of the Legislative elections is the same party as the President, but in many times, the opposition wins as a balance of power -Happened in France before-. Unless the FN entered with a clear majority -More than 60%-, Le Pen will need to make concessions for the other parties to count support inside the National Assembly. All the thriumps of the FN came in small or medium scale, but beside the surprising 2nd. place in 2002, the FN has obstacles to overcome the big elections. Second, even in a "hurting way", France is still the fifth global economy and one of the twelve powerful countries in Olympics. And Paris is one of the four top global cities with consolidate infrastructure -Metro system, telecomunications, venues and international events-, the sixth richest city in GDP, a multicultural urban area and host of International Organisations. It would be nice to see new German Olympics, but don't pretend as the current economical situation in Germany is only roses in a clear day. Like stephan said, it seems you are full ignorant of the current problems of integration between East-West, especially in Berlin. And don't forget the current mayor has his wave of criticism with allegations of incompetence and bad decisions. In conclusion, it's ridiculous that statement
Pixie_Victoria
Sarkozy's lot (usually described as centre-right, so slightly to the left of the Obama Democrats). Hmm it depends on what topic . For instance the whole UMP was fiercely against same-sex marriage...they're the old, catholic right wing. Anything shocks them. Their US equivalent would be the Tea Party. The FN is the newer, fresher version of the right side.

And Why would anyone in this World run after something they'll never get ? I was already aware of what those polls are showing of course (and im sure the other French members here were too), and it's good to see a gleam of lucidity among the population. Tulsa
This morning in the French newpapers, a survey has revealed than a large majority of French people prefer host World Expo in 2025 than SoG in 2024...I go along with this survey. 2024 will be for USA and the cost to host SoG are to high if you compare with the profit than you can expect. World expo is the best choice for France in the next decade.
baron-pierreIV
I'd go to France for a World Expo.
Tony E Loves Architecture
It's surprising really, seeing as though Paris would be one of the 'Favourites' to Host the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Also, the Olympics and Paralympics IMO, puts more spotlight onto your City then an Expo does.
TheOtherRob
One thing Paris doesn't need is a glitzy tourism advert. I don't think there's a city that's better known anywhere in the world. If they end up going for the Olympics it won't be for that reason. But I always get the impression that France has trouble selling itself as a business destination compared with other major cities of its size and clout. It is often seen as bureaucratic and not as business friendly as other places because of its strong trade unions, working hour laws, high tax rates (especially with Hollande as President). I can see why an Expo would be attractive for Paris as it tries to compete with London and the German mega-conurbations for investment and industry.
