Cyriln Posted November 8, 2024 Report Posted November 8, 2024 The Paris 2024 Olympics' official book has been released. There's some text for each sport but it mainly focuses on pictures. There's also a list of all medalists. A book for Paralympics seems to be planned but there is no other news. 2 1 Quote
Olympian2004 Posted November 9, 2024 Report Posted November 9, 2024 Who else here on this board thought of Paris 2024 particularly fondly (or melancholically) during the past few days? It was a comparatively carefree time - and it is good that we enjoyed it while we could. The Olympic and Paralympic summer is gone, the autumn storms have arrived. France has a new government mired in controversy. The US will get a new government soon that does not live by Olympic ideals. And in Germany, the government collapsed with snap elections to come shortly before or after Trump's inauguration. Ukraine is facing a dire or even threatening situation as soon as Trump takes office and might feel tempted to tell Putin to "do whatever the hell he wants". It reminds us that Olympic and Paralympic Games are only an illusion, but a beautiful one - that humanity can live in harmony and peace, at least for a while. 2 Quote

It's quite funny because as a new Parisian, I see myself that these Games are increasingly distant memories, with the special Paris 2024 signs in the metro that are becoming increasingly rare, and in the other direction the increasingly frequent return of all the problems of the Paris metro that had been made to disappear during the Olympics. International news would make it almost miraculous that Paris 2024 took place without the slightest geopolitical controversy when all the ingredients were nevertheless united to have the most tense Games since Moscow 80/LA 84. And we can't say that since the end of Paris things have improved. However, I am happy that the German government has fallen, because from my French point of view, I find that it has been catastrophic on the international level; yet, I am politically much closer on paper to them than to Merz, but for once I will hope that the CDU/CSU wins. The only good thing of these last months. Paradoxically, in the end, all this makes the Paris games even better in the collective memory. I am not sure that if it was LA that organized in 2024, we would have had this same lull. 2 Quote

The Olympics felt like a rare break from everything else going on—just people coming together for the love of sport. The energy in the city was unbelievable, and the tourism numbers were off the charts https://gowithguide.com/blog/tourism-in-paris-statistics-2024-your-quick-travel-guide-to-the-city-of-lights-5744 It’s a nice reminder of what we can be, even if it’s just for a short time. Cyriln Posted November 16, 2024 Report Posted November 16, 2024 L'Équipe released a special edition of its weekly magazine, "celebrating" the 100 days since Paris 2024 (with a sticker of the cauldron!). Here are some trivia. -Gargoyles of Notre-Dame have been considered as mascots, but it would have been too close to the characters of Disney's movie. -A dozen of Phryge costumes still exist: one at the national museum of sport in Nice, one in LA and the rest in a Parisian event agency, to be used by sponsors. -For now, it is not planned to reuse the Phryges as mascots in 2030, saying it is a part of the look of the Games, that each edition must have its own look and that the Phryges are tied to Paris 2024. But if the 2030 OCOG decides to use the Phryges, it would need discussions with IOC and IPC. -Philippe Katerine has been completely waxed before being painted in blue. One of the original ideas was to use a drawing of a hand holding a torch to hide his private parts. -Like Thomas Jolly, Yiannis Exarchos, head of OBS, says he cried the morning of the opening ceremony because of the rain. Eight drones were planned, only one has been used, for the take-off of the cauldron. Helicopters couldn't be used for half of the ceremony. -Global viewership data should be known in the coming days, he estimates half of humanity has watched the Games. Meanwhile, here is the TV coverage of general elections in Sri Lanka. https://x.com/jonathan_kdw/status/1857714547391442959 1 Quote

Cyriln Posted November 18, 2024 Report Posted November 18, 2024 Paris 2024 accounts on Instagram and TikTok are gone. IOC decided to take control on them. On Instagram, it is being merged with the Olympics account: it you were a follower of the Paris 2024 account, you should soon be a follower of the Olympics account instead. On TikTok, the account has been rebranded as @jeuxolympiques and should be the official Olympics account in French. https://www.bfmtv.com/tech/actualites/reseaux-sociaux/ils-ont-supprime-nos-souvenirs-pourquoi-les-comptes-instagram-et-tiktok-de-paris-2024-ont-disparu_AV-202411180706.html 1 Quote

In detail for the revenues: - The money given by the IOC represents €1.228 billion - The sponsors of Paris 2024: €1.238 billion - Tickets & hospitality: €1.489 billion (which represents €350 million more than planned in the bid file) For the remaining €525 million, it is probably other sources of "minimal" revenues, as well as €211 million of public money financed by various partners (the French State, the Ile-de-France region, etc.) The revenues have increased by a total of 18% compared to what had been planned in 2017 in the bid file. As for expenses, they increased by 17% compared to what had been planned in 2017 (which is almost an exploit when you look at the slippages of all the recent editions), notably because of inflation & additional security expenses, such as the opening ceremony. *(as a reminder, this only represents half of the Paris 2024 budget as a whole, the other half being on the Solideo 2024 side) 1 Quote
