We finally have a prime minister \o/

Given that Tony Estanguet is not available yet, it's Michel Barnier, president of the organizing committee of Albertville 1992, that has been selected. There might be some protests this weekend...

Well, then, the first order of business is Signing the 2030 WOG contract.

There's a blast from the past! I don't know how exactly it works in France, can Macron just name anyone (seemingly regardless of the results of the actual election...)

I am not a real expert of French politics, but from what I gathered from yesterday's news reports on German media, Macron can indeed name anyone he sees fit to form a parliamentary majority and thus survice a motion of confidence in the Assemblée Nationale. Apparently, he is hoping that Michel Barnier can gather some support among the right-wing Rassemblement National and thus form a working majority. From my perspective, that is a risky gamble and I can understand very well that the left-wing parties are now furious for having been snubbed despite their election victory. But apparently, they simply could not nominate a PM candidate whom Macron deemed capable of forming a parliamentary majority.

The guy thinks he will be the top pick for the presidential election if they let the far right do their thing. What a fool...

Whom do you mean with "the guy"? Macron is already in his second term of office and can't run again in 2027. And if you mean Barnier, I doubt that he wants to run for the presidency. He will be 76 by the time of the 2027 election.

And the far right is actually part of Macron's plan of appointing Barnier as prime minister. It is the far left that has won the parliamentary election and has now been snubbed for the choice of prime minister.

Exactly because of the left being snubbed, the centre might lose any chance to stay in presidential power.

Thing is, I would've been horrified if Boris Johnson (then Mayor of London) had announced in a rush of blood to the head that the rings on Tower Bridge would be staying up forever. 99% because it's permanently branding a world landmark (I hesitate to use the word vandalism but it'd be close to that imo).

When you put it that way, I'm not so sure I'm so keen on it then. And it looks like many across France aren't either. Anne Hidalgo today said, that the giant Rings would stay up on the Eiffel Tower 'until at least the 2028 Olympics'. And after that, "maybe or maybe not":

https://www.lemonde.fr/en/france/article/2024/09/06/paris-mayor-says-olympic-rings-to-stay-on-eiffel-tower-until-2028_6725063_7.html#

I guess part of the fever of it right now, is that many visitors like to take "selfies" in front of the Tower with the giant RIngs on it.

I like the mention, though, that if Paris wants something permanent to keep as a legacy from their 2024 hosting, that they should keep the cauldron. Make it some sort of new Paris landmark attraction & put the Olympic Rings in front of it or somewhere on the side. .

i really hope they do not do that either because it's equally cringe.

just create some dumb little park like atlanta.

So what's (baron's favorite person) Tony E. gonna do now? Apply for Nice 2030, I suppose! ^_^

There's already been several articles about his future, without asking him directly.

First, he has to finish Paris 2024, at least until the end of the year. Then, according to several people who worked with him, he may do something different, maybe not sports related, but probably not politics. But everybody agrees he can do anything he wants now.

Can't see any human handle two French -wide open- Olympics in such short times.

Interview of Thierry Reboul, aka the guy that has the crazy ideas at Paris 2024 https://www.lequipe.fr/Jo-2024-paris/Tous-sports/Article/Thierry-reboul-a-propos-du-defile-des-athletes-des-jeux-olympiques-et-paralympiques-ca-va-etre-fou/1506809

He's now planning the parade taking place next Saturday on the Champs-Élysées to celebrate French athletes and everyone involved in the Games. He considers it as the 5th ceremony, being an artistic best of the four ceremonies.

The parade will go up to the Arc de Triomphe which will be surrounded by a ring-shaped stage.

For the Paralympic closing, it was planned for the flame to be turned off in the sky, but the balloon couldn't take off because of the weather.

Other things he would have liked to do: diving taking place in the Seine from the Alexandre III bridge and squash, if it had been selected, at the Opéra Garnier.

Will you head off to see the parade on Champs-Elysees?

Very interesting! Too bad that that article is behind a paywall. But it is nice to see that, just like me, Paris can't let it go just yet and has another big ceremony ahead. If you know any posssibilty where to watch a broadcast of livestream of that ceremony, please let us know. I suppose it will be broadcast by France 2, the Olympic and Paralympic broadcaster?

And I was already wondering on Sunday whether the rain prevented the balloon from lifting off. It's funny actually, since they let the balloon lift off anyway even during the strong rain during the Olympic opening ceremony. But maybe they just didn't want to do without that dramatic effect back then, since it was the really unique thing about that cauldron.

Yes, France 2. I don't think there will be an international broadcast, given its a ceremony for the French athletes, but who knows. According to their schedule, the live broadcast starts at 9:30 am, until 1am.

Can anyone get that L'Equipe article playing ball with that archive website? I think they've got wise to it, I tried putting it in earlier but it kept the paywall bit in the snapshot. I suspect we're going to hear a lot over the coming weeks about stuff that was planned for the opening but couldn't happen due to either the rain or simple logistics. You wouldn't think it'd be possible to be too ambitious for an Olympic opening ceremony but Jolly managed it

It was done already a few days after the Olympic opening ceremony, but nevertheless, it is a really nice throwback indeed. I can't tell you how often I have hummed "L'hymne à l'amour" ever since Céline Dion sang it from the Eiffel Tower. ;) Truly one of the most iconic moments in Olympic opening ceremony history.

Here's the schedule of the parade on the Champs-Élysées.

The parade in itself will start at 4pm, from Avenue Georges V to the Arc de Triomphe. From 6:30, the new olympic and paralympic medallists will be decorated. Then, from 9pm to midnight, there will be a concert and a DJ set at the Arc de Triomphe.

The TV coverage will be close to what we had for the flame arrival in Marseille. France 2 will be live all day, starting at 6:30 am with its morning show, Télématin, up to midnight. Everything will also be live on their platform, france.tv, but it will probably be geoblocked outside France. TF1, the main French private channel, will also air the parade during the afternoon.
