sebastien1214 Posted August 1, 2024 Report Posted August 1, 2024 Another sign that there are many, many spectators in these Olympics: I have been updating the resale platform website every 10 seconds (literally) for 2 hours to try to get tickets for water polo on the only day I can be in Paris, and this is the 4th time I have been overtaken by someone else. I give up. Quote
FYI Posted August 1, 2024 Report Posted August 1, 2024 Quote please god tell me no one is seriously considering ahmedabad or doha for '36 after the beauty that is this week. the city/venues are unbelievable. give it to istanbul, i guess. As been pointed out before, not very many cities can do what Paris has done for these Games. Even Istanbul would be a big challenge, since it's so overcrowded in it's core already. And arguably, after these Summer Games, the scenery of the next two summer hosts will find it a challenge to even compete with this classic look of Paris, especially the host eight years from now. Looks like elon musk was also another CW of that. IDK what the heck he's even doing in Paris anyway at the "woke" Olympics. Quote

Especially when he can afford to fork out a ton of money on 5-star accommodations. The matter was about ten female athlete's sharing two bathrooms at the OV, so half of them moved out. Anywhere else that would also be a challenge. Quote

Especially when he can afford to fork out a ton of money on 5-star accommodations. And he isn't. Apparently, since 1992, the US basketball team has always stayed at first-class hotels. The 1992 "Dream Team" stayed at the ritzy Hotel Ambassador in Barcelona. Supposedly it was out of security concerns, they being NBA superstars and all... probably the fact that they were used to luxury accommodations also played into it. Here, from USA Today: USA Basketball players are not staying at Paris Olympic Village — and that's nothing new https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2024/07/25/usa-basketball-olympic-village-cardboard-beds/74539800007/ Edited August 1, 2024 by ejaycat Quote
Bear Posted August 1, 2024 Report Posted August 1, 2024 IBA dropped a response (which i will not dignify by linking it here) and it just continues to re-affirm why IBA will never ever be involved in Olympic boxing again, and why they should honestly be left to fade into obscurity and be replaced by World Boxing. FYI Posted August 1, 2024 Report Posted August 1, 2024 Watching these Games really makes me melancholy of what could've been at Tokyo 2020. I had such high hopes & anticipation (like many others did as well) for those Games pre-pandemic (especially after their great handover that many were in awe for at Rio 2016). Then came that damn covid & pretty much ruined it. The Japanese would've put on a great show had it not been for that, I'm sure of it! Oh well, c'est la vie. Quote
Michelle Posted August 2, 2024 Report Posted August 2, 2024 I have never spoken about this, as I wasn’t on here back in 2021 - but I really do believe Tokyo should be given another opportunity to host the Games, in the near future. A games that many have forgotten, shouldn’t be its legacy. Quote

FYI Posted August 2, 2024 Report Posted August 2, 2024 That's been a topic on here since then, but it's been noted a few times that doubtful the Japanese would want to put themselves through the whole Olympic ordeal again anytime soon. The Japanese have all but soured on the Olympics because of it, & then there was their Olympic scandal a year or so ago that soured them even more on the Olympics, that it pretty much scuppered Sapporo's 2030 Winter Olympic ambitions, that pretty much would've been given to them on a silver-platter, & in a way, that would've also helped to make up for Tokyo 2020ne. But in the end, the Japanese weren't even interested in that, either. Quote

The Japanese have all but soured on the Olympics because of it, This was in he back of my mind when I was saying about them getting another opportunity … would they even want it. From memory, even before Covid surfaced, the Japanese were at best lukewarm about hosting in Tokyo; almost as though it was nonchalant in nature. But in saying that, the games were beautifully run, and praised by everyone involved. But the world was still insular and closed off in 2021; i paid little attention to the Olympics that year given everything else that was going on. I just hope it hasn’t soured indefinitely with the Japanese. We want them hosting down the line; just as I’ve always hoped for a future Nordic Olympics … but like Japan, the people there are lukewarm to the whole Olympic project! Quote

The same can be said of Paris 2024, too. There were plenty of articles before the Games even started, at how no-big-deal the French were even a year out from these Games (IIRC, the Brits also reacted much the same to 2012 before they started). But now look at them. The French are totally embracing these Games, going virtually nuts at all the venues. I think the Japanese would've eventually come around to Tokyo 2020 as well. It's a shame, though, that we'll never know that. 2 Quote

The pandemic ruined a LOT of things. I didn't catch a lot of the Tokyo games; I watched the complete opening ceremony, and a bit of the swimming and BMX and skateboarding (which I enjoy, I like the X Games feel of it). But watching these athletes compete with no spectators was such a vibe-killer. And I actually found the closing ceremonies to be very depressing... Even though the athletes (and TV viewers) were watching, I still likened it to a bunch of actors doing a play and giving it their all in front of an empty house. It made me feel sad. Quote
sebastien1214 Posted August 2, 2024 Report Posted August 2, 2024 Satellite view of the Eiffel Tower and the stadium. The alignment of the trees makes it totally obvious and natural that the stadium is built there, while it is just a temporary structure... you would think that everything had been planned since 1889. 2 Quote

It’s not fake news. It’s the height of arrogance and incorrect. Some major USA media outlets are actually reporting themselves on top of the medal tally - which is bollocks. The official medal tally from the IOC and Paris 2024 organisers shows the correct standings. As we speak now, USA are 4th on the medal tally. The actual leader right now on the official medal tally on the Paris 2024 Medal Tally on Olympics.com is Peoples Republic of China. 1 Quote

Daze Posted August 3, 2024 Report Posted August 3, 2024 Don't know where to write, so I take this thread. Thanks to Google Photos, which reminded me that on this day 12 years ago I entered an Olympic Stadium for the first time in my life. With goosebumps all over my body. One of the moments I will never forget. A picture that came to my mind when we were in Paris and stands for Olympic Games outside the stadium was @Sir Rols picture of those three little girls with free lemonade and cookies. Those moments are much more important than results and records. 2 Quote

sebastien1214 Posted August 3, 2024 Report Posted August 3, 2024 If even Parisians, the most bitter people on the planet, regret having fled Paris during the Olympics, it is truly proof that we are experiencing exceptional Games. https://www.huffingtonpost.fr/life/article/les-jeux-olympiques-les-ont-poussees-a-fuir-paris-mais-elles-regrettent-je-manque-un-evenement-unique_237799.html 1 Quote
Michelle Posted August 3, 2024 Report Posted August 3, 2024 (edited) These are great games. I’ll reserve judgement until after the games before I consider them exceptional. However, they are moving in that direction! Edited August 3, 2024 by Michelle 1 Quote
FYI Posted August 3, 2024 Report Posted August 3, 2024 Well, these Games are already half over (time flies)! But so far, the show has been incredible! The Closing Ceremony, though, will of course be another aspect that many are going to go over with a fine, tooth comb. Quote
