Bear Posted November 10, 2023 Report Posted November 10, 2023 Torchbearer uniform has also been revealed, but the images in the Paris 2024 press release all kinda suck in showing it, so I'll just leave the folder linked while we wait for better images: 2. Bear Posted December 8, 2023 Report Posted December 8, 2023 MAJOR UPDATE: The IOC Executive Board has approved the participation of Individual Neutral Athletes (AINs) for Paris 2024 who have "qualified through the existing qualification systems of the International Federations (IFs) on the field of play". The AINs will be "invited by the IOC and their respective IFs. Only a very limited number of athletes will qualify through the existing qualification systems of the IFs." The IOC notes that there are only 11 qualified AINs so far - 8 Russians + 3 Belarussians. There will be no new or additional qualification opportunities for potential AINs - any athlete that is hoping to compete will have to qualify through existing qualification events sanctioned by their respective IFs. The eligibility conditions announced on 28 March 2023 will remain in place. The suspension of the ROC remains in place, and ROC leadership will remain uninvited and unaccredited for Paris 2024. The only groups that will be considered for AINs' support personnel accreditation will be those in medical or technical roles. All AINs and support personnel must remain completely neutral or risk being disqualified and having accreditation removed. The EB has released a document outlining all of the conditions that must be fulfilled for an AIN to participate: https://stillmed.olympics.com/media/Documents/News/2023/12/principles-of-participation-for-individual-neutral-athletes.pdf Quote

TorchbearerSydney Posted December 23, 2023 Report Posted December 23, 2023 Reality check from Paris... Macron today- If France is hit again by extremist attacks or a security crisis in the run-up to the 2024 Olympics, the huge opening ceremony Paris plans to hold on the banks of the Seine could be postponed, French President Emmanuel Macron has said. I'm sure, though, your buddy TES would try to fight that tooth-&-nail. Considering the whole hoopla of the Opening is his baby, & he made the statement recently that there's "NO plan B". But only he & Macron really know the truth. I just want Paris 2024 to go swimmingly, after Tokyo 2020 was practically robbed from us due to the Corona. So if that means a "plan B or C" or whatever, then so be it. Considering the global tensions right now, maybe it's not really the appropiate time to test the limits. Just go with what's been proven to work for now. Quote

Considering the global tensions right now, maybe it's not really the appropiate time to test the limits. Just go with what's been proven to work for now. My thoughts exactly. We had 2 pandemic-tainted Olympics that made a lot of people question why we're still doing this. I would love to see a city make it through the 2.5 weeks with little incident. We know there's going to be some fear-mongering in the lead-up. There always is. Rightfully so, the organizers have a back-up plan to their opening ceremony extravaganza. Good planners always do, even if it isn't as discussed publicly. Whether or not that's anything more than parading the athletes through an empty stadium (hard to sell tickets for that on short notice), at least they acknowledge that their plan carries some risk. Hopefully worldwide politics are in a better place 7 months from now, although I'm not holding my breath for that to happen. If we get to mid-August next summer and we're talking more about the athletes than any of the controversies, I'll consider that a big win. Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted December 26, 2023 Author Report Posted December 26, 2023 (edited) If they want to go ahead with the Open / Fluvial / Trockadero OC, then they should plan scenarios wherein "terrorist" attacks are part of the script! That they are a plot of Qanon and then the would-be attackers lay down their arms, remove their kaffiyehs and baklavas and then join the throngs of adoring Parisians cheering the boats on the scene/Seine. Kinda tweak the story -- so you can still go ahead with the extravaganza but blend in "good" / enlightened "terrorist" attacks!! Then everyone sings Hava Nagilla at the end!! yoshi Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 Starting to think they'll be going to Stade de France after all for the ceremony proper, maybe with some show elements on the Seine. Like a bigger scale version of Melbourne 2006. If they do, they should get it announced ASAP so the team can make the new version of the show, have enough time to make the whole thing work in that format. Quote
fusilli Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 With NYE approaching, organizers are going to test some serious big-crowd/onenight-out event. 1 Quote
cfm Jeremie Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 It cannot be done at Stade de France which is hosting Rugby 7 on the eve and on the following day of the Opening Ceremony. Quote

As @cfm Jeremie noted, the stadium is being used for rugby. So it's not like a traditional schedule where the main stadium is used for athletes and then they have nearly a week to get ready for the competition. It's likely a non-starter to use Stade de France for the Opening Ceremony unless they want to have it in front of a smaller crowd, if not an empty stadium. They're going to press forward with the original plan to hold it on the Seine until that plan is completely unfeasible. And we're not at that stage yet. We saw with Tokyo how they were ready to potentially have spectators until that was deemed impossible. Similarly here, we know there is a backup plan in place, but it's only as a backup. The last thing the organizers want is to admit defeat and have to announce to everyone that this grand plan they have for a unique Opening Ceremony is no longer going to work 1 Quote
BigVic Posted December 29, 2023 Report Posted December 29, 2023 Longchamp isn't used for the equestrian events as mentioned in the 2008 and 2012 bid books. Equestrian at next summer's Olympics will be held at the Versailles rather than Longchamp. Quote

It's sad to think that at this time 4 years ago, Japan was on track to host what should have been a wonderful celebration of sport and their country before a once-in-a-century plague made all hell break loose. My sincerest hope for Paris is that they are able to do what Tokyo didn't and host this event with as little outside pressure as possible. That's a lot to ask given the current state of the world, but I have the utmost faith in the Paris organizers to do everything they can to make this event exactly what we're all hoping it can be 1 Quote
