Does anyone know what Paris will be doing this month for the 1 year to go milestone?

Coming to their senses on some of their more EXTRAVAGANT ideas?

No, seriously, in an ideal world, they would be running test events, especially for those sports wherein the COJO or the French federations have had no hands-on experience hosting or staging before.  They just announced the itinerary for the Olympic Flame on July 14 and 15 when it will be in Paris for le 14th du julliet and the 15th for the environs.  So, I think the torch design might be revealed soon.

Tony Estanguet's responses sounds like lawyer prepared statements. Police just don't show and raid your stuff unless you've got something to hide.

To me, it sounds like sour grapes, i.e., parties who lost out in contracts (and their minister friends in the French gov't who also probably lost their cuts) crying foul--if that's what the gendarmes are "supposedly after."  With a year to go, the par rancouer parties want to delay and harass the COJO in the final months.

I don't know how they are going to feed I assume the 8,500 athletes and officials attending the OC at Trocakdero.  I imagine they wil start boarding the barges at 1700 until I guess 1800.  That's about dinner time for everyone.  So, will they have prepared dinner/lunch boxes to be given out on the barges?? Imagine about 10,000 lunch boxes to be parcelled out per capacity of each barge.  And then athletes, etc. will just have to eat their meals (fried chicken) on their laps because they will have taken the tables out.  So, you can just imagine all the soiled and spoiled uniforms at Opening Ceremony.  PLUS, the matter of clean up of 9,000+ lunch boxes, bottles of water, etc.,etc.
But if not, then, participants will have dinner BEFORE 1700 or after 2300 when they get back to OV.  I do not see them setting up kitchens & tables at Trockadero to feed them there??  Or will they??
Oy.  The stupid things Estanguet set up for himself and his team.

Did somebody say fried chicken?

A lot of updates from Paris 2024 as we are now within the One Year To Go milestone:

  • The torch will be unveiled at 11 AM CEST July 25
  • There will be a "Champions Park"
    • This will be located at Trocadero, and will be a place where medalists will be able to engage with fans and for artistic and cultural performances to take place (essentially making it a summer version of the Medals Plaza we see at the Winter Games)
  • Various live sites have been announced, seemingly split into two categories:
    • Club France, where French athletes will be celebrated.
    • Club 2024, where people can come and watch sports live, attend concerts, and generally have fun.
  • There will be a "Nations' Park" in La Villette, where several NOCs, NPCs, and sport federations will reside, and people can explore.

Torch Revealed for Paris 2024

I'm going to need to give this a bit of time to settle in. I don't immediately like it, but I appreciate its uniqueness and its not just another 'edgy slick stick' shape which has been more or less what most torches have been since Sydney 2000 . I don't love it but I don't hate it ! Will need to see it more in motion.

I appreciate they are trying to deviate from the usual shape of torches, but like Australian Kiwi said, it feels more like a CWG's baton than an Olympic Torch.

Also seems the flame will be small. I have a feeling they will keep with the trend of cauldrons being small (hopefully not what we saw in 2022).

Russians and Belarussians will compete at the Paralympics as neutrals following a vote during the IPC General Assembly

https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1141248/ipc-general-assembly-2023-day-2

The Global Athlete group response seems... a little excessive...

Quote

"By allowing Russia to compete at the Paris Paralympics, the International Paralympic Committee has shown their true colours by kowtowing to Russia's influence over international sport," its director general Rob Koehler claimed.

"Today's decision lacks reason and principle.

"The fact that the IPC removed a ban when Russia's aggression on Ukraine has only increased, is contradictory and aligns them to the wrong side of history in this war.

"Sadly, the IPC has ignored athletes' calls for a ban and has instead lent their support to Putin's war on Ukraine.

"Today, the IPC has given Russia a global stage at the Paris Paralympic Games for their war propaganda.

"As we have seen in the past, regardless of whether flags, anthems, or national colours are stripped away Putin will use every ounce of his athletes' participation to justify the war and death toll he has inflicted on the peaceful nation of Ukraine."

umm no they havent lol

Participation isn't a given, they're (Russia, Belarus) making themselves global pariahs but we have to remember the type of people that make up the executive staffs of IOC and their ilk.

The IOC makes a decision for the Olympic Games, while the IPC voted and made a decision for the Paralympic Games. Barring any threats from the athletes and NPCs prior to the Paralympic Opening Ceremony as we saw in Beijing, I don't see them not participating at this point

A bad look for the IOC yet one more time.

I feel terrible for Ukraine, because they're probably going to want to boycott, but they're going to have very little support.  We know that many countries have been speaking out against Russian participation, but at the same time, they have re-affirmed that they will send athletes.  That's the bind the IOC is putting them in where they know the NOCs calling them out won't go so far as to sit out the games entirely.

Russian NOC Suspended from the IOC - with immediate effect

The IOC Executive Board has also announced it reserves the right to decide about the participation of individual neutral athletes with Russian passports at the Olympic Games of Paris 2024 and the Olympic Winter Games Milano-Cortina 2026.”

There is a solution here but I think Macron would be too gutless to try it, but it's very simple: deny Russian and Belarussian athletes visas on the basis they are a threat to national security and the Olympics. The IOC would have no recourse. What are they going to do? Strip Paris of the Olympics? I'll point out that during the Asian Games in Hangzhou, several Indian Wushu athletes were denied entry into China because they came from a disputed area along the Indian-Chinese border. The IOC expressed what could be termed as no more than mild displeasure.
