Paris 2024

^ Zeus is okay with me if he at least isn't a big fan of Cirque du Soleil.

Come to think of it, is the founder of the modern Olympic games, Baron de Coubertin, still honored or at least acknowledged at certainly summer games? That was a tradition in past years. But it seems like most of that and other bits of formality at Olympic games are increasingly being booted out.

Quite surprised at the lack of specialised indoor arenas in Paris... have they really only got two that can meet the requirements for say basketball without temporary seating, reconfiguration etc?

There really isn't a need for another one. The La Chappelle Arena known as Bercy II was originally set to host basketball prelims along with judo.  Obviously that's changed. The arena will be home to Paris Basketball and at 7500 is an ideal capacity. Beyond that there's La Defense Arena and that's it. Paris wisely determined that constructing temporary arenas like London was too expensive hence handball being sent to Lille.

I don't think the basketball venue would be an issue had the FFR been able to have the Grande Stade de Rugby stadium which was set to be 80000 with a retractable roof and pitch built. That could have easily doubled as two indoor arenas. I also remember some years ago seeing some concept drawings for a renovated Parc Des Princes that had it with a retractable roof that never came to fruition.

Speculation is growing that the mascot for Paris 2024 could take the form of a hat similar to that worn during the time of the French Revolution.

The Sports Business Club website claims to have seen drawings which suggest that it might resemble the red "Liberty" cap worn during the late 18th century.

"We want a mascot that is a little different from what has been done in the past," Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet told French sports newspaper L’Equipe.

a hat... :(

So the mascot could be wearing a hat…

Any chance the mascot is a mime by any chance?

The first few paragraphs of the article says that the mascot itself may be a hat, not that the mascot will be wearing a hat

I realized that after re-reading the paragraph. Welp there goes the mime mascot idea.

What if you could wear the mascot, would it become part of you like a symbiote or it would be a possession? We might have to look up to our mascot overlords soon!

You can still wear all the other mascots on your head if you want.  No one will stop you.  The French, again, are being bizarre.  I don't know what's so exciting about the red cap which wasn't used that much in LES MISERABLES anyway.  But women must be bare-chested in order to wear the Paris 2024 mascot/cap!!

Paris 2024 and FIBA to find new venue for Olympic basketball preliminary stage (insidethegames.biz)

Well I thought Paris would stand their ground on this especially after Martin Fourcade's comments the other day about using Expo Porte de Versailles as a suitable venue given that it meets all the requirements while admitting it is not an NBA caliber arena. Now they've buckled to pressure from FIBA and the Expo is no longer the preliminary rounds venue for basketball. My guess is badminton and rhythmic gymnastics will be moved from the La Chappelle Arena (that's what FIBA wants as in the original venue plan). To spite FIBA, it would be nice to see them ship basketball out to the stadium in Lille and bring handball into the expo hall just to smite FIBA.

The question in my mind is that Paris 2024 seems to have a very poor grasp of the importance and priorities of the various Federations.  And the Paris region really could've used one more indoor stadium.  My solution would have been to demolish the interior of the God-awful Centre Pompidou in the Marais and stick a stadium in there.  I really hated that museum when I visited it.

Based on the media reports, this seems to be more driven by the NBA players rather than FIBA alone as I think FIBA has cozied up to their demands for fear of the possibility the big NBA names would stay home. Paris is already building a mid-sized multipurpose arena with the La Chappelle Arena which will be home to Paris Basketball. It's not like Paris hasn't invested in other indoor stadiums in recent years (La Defense Arena) along with the renovated Bercy Arena. If Paris were to build another one, who would use it? PSG Handball uses Georges Carpenter Hall which has since been renovated. The ideal solution seems to be to swap rhythmic gymnastics and badminton into the convention hall (both are often targeted for exhibition halls anyways when it comes to the Olympics) and let basketball be held at the new midsized arena as originally intended. A win win for everyone. And if the NBA players and FIBA are making a stink about playing in a convention center now, then surely LA is going to have to move preliminaries from the LA Convention Center in 2028.

As for the priorities of the federations, well, they've robbed enough host cities blind of money with uneccessary venues that have no viable legacy (remember when UCI said the newly constructed Barra Velodrome in Rio wasn't suitable for an Olympics so the Rio organizers tore it down and built a brand new one). As far as requirements, Hall 6 in the Expo Porte de Versailles fulfilled all the requirements agreed upon by FIBA and the IOC. It just wasn't fancy enough.

Several cities bidding to host basketball matches at Paris 2024

Lyon, Orléans, Tremblay-en-France and Reims have all reportedly put their names in the mix to host preliminary phase fixtures at Paris 2024.

...

The Olympique Lyonnais (OL) Groupe is proposing to host basketball matches at Lyon’s new LDLC Arena as it officially announced its candidature.

"The 12,000-seat multipurpose hall in basketball configuration will open its doors at the end of 2023 and will benefit from all the latest generation innovations to host a competition in the best conditions for both athletes and the public," a statement from the OL Groupe read.

"OL Groupe is now convinced that the LDLC Arena could find its place in the next Summer Olympic Games and contribute to the influence of an entire territory during this major event for our country."

Other contenders include Reims, Tremblay-en-France and Orléans which is putting forward the 10,000-seat CO'Met.

"I don't understand how we can transform a hall in Paris like that when we have, at home, here, one hour from the capital, a tool that meets all standards," said Thomas Renault, the deputy mayor of Orléans in charge of sports in a report by Basket Europe.

"Equipment of the latest generation, financed, which will not entail additional expenses for the organisers."
