I seem to remember their previous bid enjoying cross party support. I certainly haven't heard of any serious political opposition being reported but sometimes things don't get picked up in English speaking media. Found the answer myself: Paris 2024 underlines that the bid has the full, cross-party support from all three levels of government with no organised opposition to staging the Games. Locally, an assembly of 209 councillors also gave its unanimous support to Paris 2024 – the first unanimous vote in the assembly’s history. Furthermore, on a national level, all major party candidates for the Presidential election in May 2017 support the bid. I assume "all major party candidates" isn't including the FN, however? I've tried Googling and I can't find their or Le Pen's stance on the Olympic bid, other than they're annoyed the slogan is in English. In being a publicly financed bid the Parisian bid shares the very core problem that exists in all fleeting bids, taxpayer money. I predict a failed bid. Once again, does anyone have any thoughts on this Paris story about Paris (which he tried to spin as being about LA so he posted it in the LA thread)? Don't think this is a cause for concern for Paris. Good to see though that GB's most notable troll can read and regurgitate talking points he's seen elsewhere. Maybe he wants to check the number of signatures that Paris received in comparison to what other failed bidders got.

Basically, 4 of the main presidential candidates support the bid (their party also): Le Pen, Fillon, Macron, Hamon, and one doesn't: Melenchon. In my opinion, this petition stuff is not a hot topic at all with regards to the number of signatures: about 10 000 at the present. Rob2012
Thanks neige, so a change in government wouldn't really matter, despite RuFF's claims hopes. Le Pen winning would obviously have a Trump effect on Paris 2024, but even she and her party supports the bid. I call that more or less a score-draw. Both LA and Paris have solid political support. Rob2012
It really depends if it gains any traction. Budapest's started slowly - when we first heard about it it sounded like a fringe effort to destabilise the bid yet in the end it killed it. Not saying this will be the same obviously. Hopefully your instincts are correct and it doesn't balloon into something bigger.

Roger87
We need to remind Budapest referendum has also political undertones as part of an opposition movement against Orban and his regime, which is gaining slots making Hungary more authoritarian.
