LA Historic Park Opening this Weekend

Would provider another stunning backdrop for the city, with the growing Downtown LA skyline in the back, especially during those infamous sunsets.

I just may be at the LA State Historic Park on Saturday, as well as the Festival of Books at USC.  Tippi Hedren's gonna speak there, I'm hoping I get there in time to see her.

Watch out for the birds.

Hehe.  You mean Tippi Hedren might be attracting whole flocks of different species of them?

I'm actually quite excited about the opening of the LA State Historic Park.  I've been waiting for its current iteration for years, and riding the Gold Line and driving by it often in anticipation.

I realize its grand opening coincides with Earth Day.

The Festival of Books, at the USC Campus.  I usually try to go every year; I didn't go last year.  It used to be held at UCLA, and then some years ago they moved it to USC.  Though I'm a UCLA Bruin at heart (my sis went there and I've always loved the campus) and will always bash USC whenever I get the opportunity (hehe), I like that the book festival is at USC---more centrally located, and very rail transit handy.  The book fest seemed particularly crowded this year.

You can see this fountain in the 1967 film "The Graduate" with Dustin Hoffman, where his character follows Katharine Ross' character from LA to Berkeley.  Though the film does contain some shots that were filmed in Berkeley, for some reason, most of the college campus shots were actually filmed at USC, even though the setting is UC Berkeley.

Thanks. :)

Incidentally, as an aside, I just learned that the Uytengsu Aquatics Center on the USC campus is named for Wilfred Uytengsu, a swimmer and USC alumnus, who happens to be Filipino.  He represented the Philippines at the Southeast Asian Games.  In 2013, as CEO of Alaska Milk, he donated $8 million to USC for the complete renovation of what was then called the McDonald's Swim Stadium---hence its renaming.

When Nestle bought their Alaska Milk Co. in the Philippines for so many millions, that's when Wilfred gained the funds to make the donation to USC and get his name up there -- so thanks to all the babies in the Philippines for driving the funds to have Uytengsu get part of USC named after him.  BTW, he also gained an American wife while studying @ USC.  But too bad, it won't become the main swimming venue for '24 or '28.

Phase II of the Purple Line extension has received its notice to proceed. Heavy construction is expected to begin 2018. The project per the contract should be completed no later than 2026, but with newly available Measure M funds the entire line (including Phase III) is expected to open prior to 2024.

I read that Metro is very much expecting to find prehistoric fossils, especially in the area nearest the La Brea Tar Pits in the Fairfax District. According to Metro, that has been worked into the timeline. Even then, with an injection of Measure M funds, acceleration of the project seems likely, especially a winning bid.

AbRuFFhamson makes an interesting point about what Tony Estanguet is pedaling to the American press.

He argues that the Parisian bid is selling that the games are driven by the sport movement while distancing itself from politics, even though the sport movement in France and much of Europe is the government itself.

http://www.3wiresports.com/2017/05/01/not-fake-news-ioc-looking-real-crisis/

Given the Olympic demand for host nations and cities to ride roughshod over normal rights of access, trade etc. these days, it's difficult to see how a major role for government can be avoided.

Anyhow, CARB has endorsed LA2024. For those that don't know CARB (California Air Resources Board) has been highly influential in US policy in reference to the environment and at times it's policy has shifted even the EPA to align with it. CARB is a serious player in the environmental game.

Yeah, but with how your BFF and Sugar Daddy, Trumpkin, is decimating the EPA, what good is CARB?  Won't any of its decisions be rendered moot if that agency meets its demise?  So therefore, this boast of yours for LA, is just another piece of meringue.

Ruff, can't you change your tune -- or are you really a 98-year granny (so 5 decades older than me) who can't learn a new dance step?

It helps that California will uphold the Paris agreement and excercise its State power to keep in place and even enhance enviornmental regulations that can be rolled back at a Federal level.

Thank god for California and the giant middle finger it will give to Trump at anything he does.

Hey, could it be, that if LA does not get 2024 or 2028, that it won't bid again, at least not in the foreseeable future?

"While there remains confusion over the award process for these two Games, [Casey] Wasserman provided one point of great clarity – if LA is left empty-handed after its bid, the city would not be bidding again.

"'We won't bid again in Los Angeles. Because we have to pay for the bid privately. And raising 60 million dollars privately from individuals in Los Angeles is a tough road to go down once. I will tell you, twice it is not going to happen,' said Wasserman, the biggest contributor to that $60 million budget."
