Madrid Gay Pride

Madrid hosts every year one of the most important and crowded gay parades of the world. Between 1.000.000 and 2.000.000 million people meet in a route between Puerta de Alcala square and España square. This year the itinerary will be modified, from Carlos V square to Puerta de Alcalá square.

In 2007 Europride was celebrated with more than 2.000.000 million people, and in 2017 Madrid will perform the World Gay Pride.

This celebration (Desfile del Orgullo Gay de Madrid) is protected by law, and considered by the Administration of Madrid as relevant event. Madrid Gay Pride is celebrated during one week with a lot of cultural and leisure activities, streets spectacles and concerts, coinciding with the celebration of the Chueca neighbourhood, the gay district of Madrid.

It has two editions: a fun run for amateur athletes and an elite race for professional athletes. In 2012 the race achieved its historical record of participants, up to 40,000. It is based upon the Saint Silvester Marathon, a Brazilian race (held since 1925). It is considered the more important New Year´s Eve race in the world by the specialized media.

I dont understand why people attack for some videos of events without second intentions, that reveal that the city can manage crowds of people without problem, and the spirit of the spanish people is outgoing! It is incredible the bad blood...

But I don't mind

Don't speak about the spanish inquisition, jews, etc., because other countries don't have so many actuations in the past to be proud of.

What about the sailing of Magellan? The expulsion of the Jews (and Muslims) from Spain? The Inquisition??

1. Magellan was Portuguese working for the Spanish Crown and together with Elcano, completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth. Something that I am very proud of but at the same time not related at all with the Olympics.

2. So when the Muslims came to Spain and occupied the Visigothic Kingdom was right? Why that was right and to re-take back their land is wrong? Again, very interesting piece of history to talk for hours but not related at all to the Olympics. Maybe we should mention the Cruzaders from the rest of Europe that occupied Holy Land.

3. Inquisition: Actually Inquisition is not something invented by Spain, but by the Catholic Church and the first Inquisition was established in France, although later on it was established in ALL catholic countries. Maybe you should read some history before spreading **** about my country.

Why dont we talk about the role of the Japanese during World War II in China? Or the invasions of the Ottoman Empire in other countries? Maybe because it has nothing to do with the Olympics itself?

Im tired of people talking **** or past historical events to damage the image of a country. Each country has its own history and to be honest, some past historical events are much worse than the Inquisition.

@Deloxley -- my post was more rhetorical than anything. It was just a reply to the sudden blitz of video-posts from Ms. Chelin Int'l who's trying to impress posters here about Madrid's capabilities when most of the posters here already know that Madrid is capable except the timing might be wrong. That was the context of my response. Ms. Chelin's posts are like being hit on the head by a giant postcard saying "Madrid, Madrid, Madrid!" I even like Madrid--and it is my choice of the 3--but unless Tokyo implodes, Madrid is JUST not going to win 2020. It is much too soon after Barcelona. Other countries deserve to host first. That's just the pecking order.

To be honest, and even living in Madrid, I dont really care if Madrid host the Olympics or not. Well, that´s not true, I would love the Olympics to be held here, but anyway,...

Maybe you know perfectly well that Madrid is capable of organizing all kinds of events, but not everybody is as well informed as you are.

The question is that I dont get what the Inquisition, Magellan and the Muslims has to do as a response to all those videos. I just dont get it.

Anyway, my point of view is that as an open forum people can post 1.000 videos of Madrid, Tokyo or Istambul if they like. It might be irrelevant information as an hyper-informed person you are, but not for the rest.

Well, the first part of the thread's title is: Madrid Huge & Awesome Events. I certainly think those (the Inquisition, magellan, the muslims) were HUGE and IMPORTANT events that somehow emanated, originated, were caused by Important Personages living in Madrid. So very broadly, there is a Madrid link -- and u never know, they may feature in some future opening Ceremony. ;)

Very broadly you just didnt mention anyone who lived in Madrid as the Inquisition was an institution from the Catholic Church in Rome, Magellan was portuguese and the Moors were defeated in a war by several Kingdoms when Spain wasnt even a single country or Madrid its Capital.

Anyway, I invite you to know the rich and great history of my country. That way you can imagine what would be displayed at the opening ceremony in case the Olympics are awarded to Madrid.

I know all about Spain. Have been there 3x; and I am Spanish on my father's side. I just don't like July and August in the Mediterranean. TOO HOT!! Next time I go back to Spain, I want to see Toledo, Santiago de Compostela, San Sebastian, Pamplona, Bilbao and that small village in Galicia where the del Fierro ancestor comes from.

I'm sure the far majority on these forums know that Madrid is "capable" of hosting the Olympics. But that's really not the crux of the matter here. The real thing is why should Spain host again so soon after bigger countries like France, Germany & Italy haven't hosted a Summer Olympics in decades, & in France's case it'll at least be a full century. Not to mention the ones that haven't hosted yet.

Nothing against them, Madrid is a beautiful city & could host great Games, but their timing is off at this moment. Plus their arguments aren't really that compelling in this race. 2032 seems like a more appropriate time, spacing it further along from Barcelona & where things more than likely would have improved there by then to make a much better case. Personally, I think they should go for a Winter Olympics instead. They'd make a much more compelling option in that sense.

Well, the quid is that there are three cities:

-Istambul is an incredible stage, with a hot grown country, but it is now the moment? Till one week ago most people thought yes, now maybe opening doors to emerging countries with a relative poverty level or without a plenty social stability, could create situations like this:

and this is not so good for the IOC reputation. Now the worst enemy for Turkey is not the protests movement, is Brazil, probably its mirror for the IOC.

-Tokyo is one of the big three in the world, do it deserves a games? Of course, like many! they have a very good proyect, why not!? But would change something in this city, in this country after the games? Probably, not much.

-Madrid is an unknown city for an important part of the world population. It is not an iconic city, despite of its size, history, architecture, art, and social live. What would be the change? Take the position that it worths on the map, it is frustrating to know people that don't know anything about Madrid, or even don't care because they didn't hear about it.

Paris is Paris, Berlin is Berlin, Rome is Rome, Istambul is Istambul, Madrid is... -"well of Spain I know Barcelona, Mallorca, Sevilla, Ibiza... Madrid? Uhm,, "

When is the time then? Our gold sport age, a country that need trust and investment (for the own health of the EU), a big support of their citizens, a perfect proyect for athletes, and over all, a city that need a brutal marketing campaign. For Madrid OG mean a lot.

What is more important "a neverending rotation and strict plan" or "cities than deserve with the most positive legacy"? And the answer is... Lobby, interests and more lobby.

I hope they are doing well, because for Madrid is now or never,

because for Madrid is now or never,

I really don't think so. IMO, Madrid will inevitably definitely host some day. The old "last major capital of Europe never to have hosted the games" will be a settling argument one day. And, yes, from personal experience, it is a lovely vibrant city.

Just personally, Barcelona is far too fresh and recent in my mind to think Spain should host again so quickly. And after all the media focus on the Athens games - as an example of profligacy - as Greece's economic crisis broke and worsened, I just think it's entirely the wrong sort of message the IOC would want to give out by awarding them to Madrid at this point as well.

That's just a personal opinion, backed up a little bit by my own feeling, based on observing lots of past bid races, that the time is not right this round for Madrid. But its continuing attempts will start building up sympathy and it's time will come.

When is the time then?

When is it Paris' time? They've tried 3 different times within 20 years & failed. Like I said in the post that you quoted, I'd say that 2032 is a much more appropiate time. Fourty years difference from 1992 makes it much more understandable to return to a country relevant of importance compared to it's bigger neighbors that have been waiting much longer for a Summer Olympics. And by then, I'm sure that Madrid will have picked up from it's current struggling times & could make a much stronger, more compelling argument. But right now, the "austerity Games to boost our sluggish economy" argument is very compelling whatsoever.

*is 'not' very compelling whatsover.

I don't think so. Madrid is the capital of Spain not Barcelona. I knew that and i'm sure if I quizzed my friends they would know that aswell.

Madrid came 3rd in 2012 and even topped the 2nd round and had the 2nd highest evaluation score for 2012.

They also topped the first round in 2016 and had the 2nd highest evaluation score and came 2nd.

They are very well known but in 2016 they were ranked lower than Tokyo and the world seems to think Spain is in a poor economic state while Japan is seemingly better so that is why I think Madrid will lose to Tokyo.
