Will a Munich 2022 bid be favourite?

Oslo is not boring, and will become an instant success like Lillehammer was in 1994

Well, I have a different meaning behind the word "boring." Believe me, any olympic games are fun, but I've always felt that the olympics should go somewhere new unless there really is no choice but to bring them back somewhere again. Oslo would provide a great games, I just always like to see them go somewhere new

A sad day for the winter olympics, indeed.

I understand that many draw conclusions, but I think we should keep in mind that the referendum hasn't exactly been the norm, has it? I'm pretty sure that if cities always had referendums, some cities that were finally awarded the games, would have said no at this stage. Especially if it was an olympics only referendum taking place in each venue district, where all had to say yes. I mean, talk about making life hard for yourselves, although admirable from a democratic point of view.

I also think it was strange to make it a separate referendum. If my city had done that instead of having it simultaneously with the elections for parliament, we could have seen a very different result.

If such high requirements for popular support at this stage is the norm in western countries, then I agree the IOC needs to think about its image (and to a degree, IOC has to do so anyways, but IOC gets lots of blames for other's mistakes. They don't control other's actions; they make the premises). I do however not see the logic in blaming IOC for Sochi. Munich is not Sochi, and they didn't need to be as non-green as Sochi to get the olympics. Few olympics would have been as green as Munich. A very weak argument in my opinion.

Let's tone it down a little, eh?:-)

Obviously for those who want to see the olympics in Oslo, that has suddenly become much more probable, but we also love the WG and as such it's a sad day.

Sad about Munich. But for all those who are now crowing Oslo - haven't several people posted that Oslo doesn't yet have the needed financial guarantees from the national government? What if they don't get them.

Correct me if I've misunderstood, but I don't think Oslo has this wrapped in Munich's absence, at all.

**er, make that CROWNING Oslo.

That is correct. Stortinget, that is the parliament, will finally vote over financial guarantees (practically, financial support as well) after the bid has been through external evaluation, which it is currently undergoing.

If Stockholm chooses to "formally announce their interest", they will also not yet have been through any kind of political process or have financial guarantees, so they will also have this obstacle.

Today's outcome might make it more probable with governmental support, since the "Munich scare" no longer exists, but it touches right into heated district debates and it's impossible to say (for me, right now) which way it'll turn. The new cabinet has strikingly few members from Oslo, but the minister of sports and culture luckily supports the olympics.

That Munich will not be bidding is a bitter, bitter disappointment for me. This is twice now that the projected front runner for a Games (Rome for 2020, now Munich in 2022) have not even been at the starting gate. It is such a shame mainly since I am not sure when the stars will align for Munich or any German city to get a better shot.

Well, as I said some time ago, I have no problem shifting my support to the Oslo bid now since I would love to see the Games back under the Northern Lights and to bask in the warm glow of Norweigan hospitality. It is sooner than I thought the opportunity would come, but it is an opportunity none the less.

After this, I think Bach will be busy for the next years (after Sochi and Rio) changing paradigms in the IOC and persuading that the Olympic Games aren't an expensive sports party. Central Asia is still appealing to me as well as Małopolskie and the Tatras.

Anyway, I also believe that people from Olso won't be eager to host the WOG in 2022.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'd rather Beijing than Oslo!

Oslo would host a great Games I'm sure, but if it is going to go somewhere the Olympics has been before, I'd like to see it somewhere interesting. In its own way, a third Asian Olympics would be an interesting scenario for Olympic history. Europe has done it many times, and given Asia's rising importance there is no reason it can't happen there. Also - that way (fingers crossed) Munich comes to its senses and goes up for 2026.

This is however just a terrible, terrible shame. Frankly, I'm more disappointed than Istanbul losing 2020.

Hmmm. I've got no beef with China itself getting a WOGs. I'd be happy if it was Harbin, for example. But Beijing to me just seems overkill and unsuited for the WOGs. The idea just leaves me totally cold.

Aslo this theory that the IOC is somehow on par with the Vatican according to the German press is just rubbish. Ultimately Munich 2022 isn't happening because of NIMBYism --- nothing more, nothing less. You don't have to be a Bavarian to see that.

If people truly believed Munich would be like Sochi then they're deluded and misinformed. That is the real problem. A Munich WOG made sense because that region was to have benefited from the huge economic impact of this event -- without the huge costs confronted by almost all recent hosts. It would have been a European Vancouver.

The idea just leaves me totally cold.

Well, it is the Winter Olympics. ;)

Beijing is a city hemmed by mountains on one size - much like LA. You don't have to venture far out of Beijing to be in alpine regions. I agree, it doesn't match the idea of the city (possibly due to 2008) - but winter plays a big role in Beijing life.

In the wake of Munich, it is not ideal, but if it comes down to this bunch - I think it would be fantastic to see those 2008 venues put to use again. I loved my experience in Beijing in 2008 and am interested to witness it again under a different lens in 2022.

I'm open minded about Krakow and Almaty - but fear Eastern Europe fatigue following 2014. But both would be great.

Oslo would be the most traditional and sensible of the lot - but I can't help but feel really bored by the idea.

Also Norway is one of THE most expensive countries in the world.

Oh well, eye of the beholder I suppose. Personally, I find the notion of going back to Beijning so soon far more boring than Oslo.

Also, as I said in one of the other threads, I think a mega-mega-megalopolis like Beijing would be wildly inappropriate for the WOGs at a time when the IOC is having a hard time getting any enthusiasm from so many of the traditional winter sports powers because of fears of games gigantism.

Even if Europe wouldn't get 22, Munich won't go for26 anymore. There would basically be the same arguments and protagonists on both sides, it would be Groundhog Day. A Munich bid is d-e-a-d.

Of course, objectively, this wouldn't have been a rerun of Sochi, but the perception was different.

Since 2022 may very well go to Scandinavia, I can see 2026 going to the Alps. I think the appetite is still there for an Alpine bid, and Germany still has the best case for an Alpine games. Small consolation, I know, considering none of this matters if the people of Munich don't want it.

Welcome Munich & Germany anyway, in the club of cities/countries who aren't interested in holding the games. Honestly, the decision of the Müncheners has to be respected , and though I regret it, I understand it even better since if the vote had been held in Paris, I would have been part of the "no" voters.

To the disappointed Germans here, I would like to tell you you weren't ridiculous. There may be more hope for Munich & Germany in the future though as the "yes" votes loses but ends up reaching a pretty high score. If the same vote had been held in Paris today, the "yes" vote wouldn't have been higher than 30% and my personal opinion is it would have been somewhere in the 20's. There's room for hope, and pride for the yes side in Bavaria.

Sorry, but that result yesterday was more fundamental than a few % here and there. As long as the IOC is perceived as the clandestine organisation that let Sochi's megalomania and all kinds of other scandals happen, the result here will be no different.

Maybe that's difficult to understand for people outside Germany, but if you read the comments here in the media/FB etc (already in the past few weeks), the result came as no surprise sadly and is not just a snap-shot.

It is sad that the people, who voted "no", believe they can change sport federations/sport institutions with such results in a referendum - furthermore they are not able to criticise the IOC anymore, when it is awarding of Olympic Games to countries, where the impact of the Olympic Games onto the environment is much higher than in Munich it would have been...
