Will a Munich 2022 bid be favourite?

But they always wanted to hold a referendum before a bid, unlike for 2018 when they did it at the very end, in Garmisch only.

I agree the campaign was flawed, I wonder if the bid team ever felt the temperature by some secret poll ahead of presenting the concept two months ago...

Another dilletantic attempt, at least the same scale as the Leipzig disaster. They just had no clue how to counter the more valid and concrete arguments the No campaign brought up (I'm not about some polemics, but the appeal by the No people to the housing situation etc.)

Garmisch final result: 48,44% in favour, 51,56% against. Now it's cemented. Bye, Munich 2022! :(

369 votes difference...

Hey where's that BR guy? With Munich out Baton Rouge has all shots to score 2022!

In all honesty I am very saddened by this, Munich would have been a fantastic host and probably start a new tradition. That's the one thing I love about the German games; they always start a new Olympic tradition from flames to mascots the Germans are on top of their **** and know how to through a party!

Finally, it's official: Garmisch has counted all districts, the opponents have won with 51.56 per cent. Their lead narrowed on the final stretch, but that doesn't change anything about the result that Munich will definitely not bid for the 2022 Games.

Well, it doesn't help anything if we are denied the chance to try something new indeed. There won't be another Munich bid for Olympic Winter Games, that's what Munich's mayor Ude said beforehand already, in case of a defeat of the bid in the referendums.

Now let's see whether Hamburg or Berlin put up a 2024 bid and have to face lazy supporter asses there as well.

Eh what about Stuttgart ;) . I would move back to Germany just to vote for Berlin to host again. Germany is a beautiful nation and my ancestral home, for it to be able to throw '36 aside would be great for Germany as a nation and people. I felt 2022 would give them that opportunity, but sadly no.

The bitter thing is that Germany would have stood the best chance in 50 years to get the IOC's nod as Olympic host again. A race for 2024 or any other future Summer Games will be much tougher, because of the (at least usually) bigger international competition for Summer Games. Furthermore, it's so very rare nowadays that an Olympic bid city wins directly in its first run. Berlin or Hamburg will probably have to make second try (at least) to succeed. So I have high doubts that we'll see Olympic Games in Germany before the 2030s or even 2040s. 2024 will most likely go to Europe, but 2028 most certainly won't. So...

Final result in Traunstein: 40.33% in favour (22374) and 59.67% against (33100)

Yeah, if it had been limited to Ruhpolding as the only village with venues, it would have passed. In Inzell, famous for its speed skating arena, almost 70% were against. They were upset apparently that the arena should be used for media centre instead of sports. Village envy killed that one...

Not that it counts anymore, but the opponents are currently leading 53-47 in Munich (after 344 of 474 districts have been counted) plus the referendum has broken the quorum, that means that more than the necessary 107,323 voters have either voted for or against the bid.

Hasn't Wowereit yet made a press release that Berlin is now ready to bid for 2024? *sarcmode off*

So I think it´s time now for Hamburg. I highly doubt that a public referendum could be won in Berlin.

Hamburg is much more positive about olympics than any other german city.

But during the last tries there had been a CDU (conservative party) government in Hamburg.

Now the SPD (labour) in in charge. Don´t know how that´ll affect a future bid.

Well, at least my local district voted in favour...

I wonder what Thomas Bach will make of this? Two months in office and - while he was of course neutral - the Olympics get a huge slap in the face in his home country, and even home state (he's from Northern Bavaria)...He probably wasn't too keen on already having to announce a German city in his first bidding vote, but surely he was interested to have Munich in the race...

Like I said in another thread yesterday, the IOC really needs to take a long, hard look at why most of the traditional European countries are not interested in bidding for the Winter Games. The IOC will be saved by Oslo for 2022, but they need to be proactive in thinking about how to make the Winter Games more appealing to Western Europe before they get into a situation where they have no legitimate bidders to choose from.

By awarding Oslo the 2022 Winter Olympics, it would give other traditional Western European options hope that they do indeed still have a chance. Much like 2020, where the IOC chose the traditional, safest choice (Tokyo), over the mega expensive, new frontier option (Istanbul).

That said, Sochi is not to blame. No one expects Munich (or Oslo or Switzerland or Austria) to spend what Sochi did.

Exactly!

At least Stockholm will likely join now...I've always been a fan of them over Oslo and the others

Yeah, probably. I said a couple of days ago that it was interesting that they're gonna make their announcement one way or the other a couple of days after Munich's referendum. Not having to deal with a formidable opponent like Munich would've been might be all the enticement the Swedes might need!

Hamburg also has referendums on certain issues I believe. Even if politicians don' want to, they might be pressed to go for one to legitimise a bid (and face a result like today).

As for the governing party, Munich has been ruled by SPD/Greens and its mayor was a strong supporter of bidding, it was a big coalition in favour, and it was still not enough to convince the people.

I think it's very sad, Munich could have offered an almost perfect Winter Olympics.

I also agree with the link above, especially:

The No is therefore also a serious blow for the German IOC President Thomas Bach. It shows: commercialism and corruption, lack of transparency, ostentation and proximity to questionable powers have the organization to which he has held since recently brought a crisis that reaches deep. The IOC acts as fallen out of time - parallels to the Catholic Church are not far away.

From the above link:

"The vote is not a signal against the sport, but against the non-transparency and the greed for profit of the IOC," said Ludwig Hartmann, a Greens party lawmaker and a leader of the NOlympia movement that led the campaign against the bid.

"I think all possible Olympic bids in Germany are now out of question. The IOC has to change first. It's not the venues that have to adapt to the IOC, but the other way around," Hartmann said.

Interesting thoughts. I wish they'd go into detail.

Now, I hope Krakow is going forward and submit an official bid. Neither Oslo or any of the other current official bidders excite me at all.

Completely agree. I don't know what it is, there is just something about Krakow that makes me want to see the WOG there. The only other one I wouldn't mind seeing would be Stockholm, but they still haven't officially bid yet. Beijing is polluted, Lviv is just plain weird, Oslo is kind of boring to go back there again, and Almaty interests me, but I just don't think Kazakhstan is quite the right place to have the olympics just yet.
