I agree the campaign was flawed, I wonder if the bid team ever felt the temperature by some secret poll ahead of presenting the concept two months ago... Another dilletantic attempt, at least the same scale as the Leipzig disaster. They just had no clue how to counter the more valid and concrete arguments the No campaign brought up (I'm not about some polemics, but the appeal by the No people to the housing situation etc.) Garmisch final result: 48,44% in favour, 51,56% against. In all honesty I am very saddened by this, Munich would have been a fantastic host and probably start a new tradition. That's the one thing I love about the German games; they always start a new Olympic tradition from flames to mascots the Germans are on top of their **** and know how to through a party! There won't be another Munich bid for Olympic Winter Games, that's what Munich's mayor Ude said beforehand already, in case of a defeat of the bid in the referendums. I would move back to Germany just to vote for Berlin to host again. Germany is a beautiful nation and my ancestral home, for it to be able to throw '36 aside would be great for Germany as a nation and people. A race for 2024 or any other future Summer Games will be much tougher, because of the (at least usually) bigger international competition for Summer Games. Furthermore, it's so very rare nowadays that an Olympic bid city wins directly in its first run. Berlin or Hamburg will probably have to make second try (at least) to succeed. So I have high doubts that we'll see Olympic Games in Germany before the 2030s or even 2040s. 2024 will most likely go to Europe, but 2028 most certainly won't. So... Hamburg is much more positive about olympics than any other german city. But during the last tries there had been a CDU (conservative party) government in Hamburg. Now the SPD (labour) in in charge. Two months in office and - while he was of course neutral - the Olympics get a huge slap in the face in his home country, and even home state (he's from Northern Bavaria)...He probably wasn't too keen on already having to announce a German city in his first bidding vote, but surely he was interested to have Munich in the race... FYI Posted November 10, 2013 Report Share Posted November 10, 2013 Like I said in another thread yesterday, the IOC really needs to take a long, hard look at why most of the traditional European countries are not interested in bidding for the Winter Games. The IOC will be saved by Oslo for 2022, but they need to be proactive in thinking about how to make the Winter Games more appealing to Western Europe before they get into a situation where they have no legitimate bidders to choose from. By awarding Oslo the 2022 Winter Olympics, it would give other traditional Western European options hope that they do indeed still have a chance. Much like 2020, where the IOC chose the traditional, safest choice (Tokyo), over the mega expensive, new frontier option (Istanbul). That said, Sochi is not to blame. No one expects Munich (or Oslo or Switzerland or Austria) to spend what Sochi did. Exactly! At least Stockholm will likely join now...I've always been a fan of them over Oslo and the others Yeah, probably. I said a couple of days ago that it was interesting that they're gonna make their announcement one way or the other a couple of days after Munich's referendum. Even if politicians don' want to, they might be pressed to go for one to legitimise a bid (and face a result like today). As for the governing party, Munich has been ruled by SPD/Greens and its mayor was a strong supporter of bidding, it was a big coalition in favour, and it was still not enough to convince the people. I also agree with the link above, especially: The No is therefore also a serious blow for the German IOC President Thomas Bach. It shows: commercialism and corruption, lack of transparency, ostentation and proximity to questionable powers have the organization to which he has held since recently brought a crisis that reaches deep. Neither Oslo or any of the other current official bidders excite me at all. Completely agree. I don't know what it is, there is just something about Krakow that makes me want to see the WOG there. The only other one I wouldn't mind seeing would be Stockholm, but they still haven't officially bid yet. Beijing is polluted, Lviv is just plain weird, Oslo is kind of boring to go back there again, and Almaty interests me, but I just don't think Kazakhstan is quite the right place to have the olympics just yet.
