SASCOC Preparing South Africa Bid

I think Ramsamy is just saving face given how there's very little appetite for $100 million bid campaigns in RSA right now.

Well, (1) the IOC is trying hard to cut down the costs of the bid campaign; and (2) if RSA played the "Africa card" shrewdly, I am sure a $25 million campaign will more than suffice. They should also hire someone like Mike Lee to guide the campaign. And maybe Durban should go for the 2022/26 CWGames first before shooting for the BIg One. Once they have those items checked off, an RSA bid would be unbeatable.

Things on I think how things will turn out for South Africa

Durban South Africa 2026 Commonwealth Games after Singapore 2022 Commonwealth Games

Cape Town South Africa 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics Games after Toronto Canada 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics Games.

You want South Africa to plan concurrently for a Commonwealth Games AND an Olympics and to do it in 2 separate cities? That sounds like more than that country is ready to handle.

Agree. I can't see any responsible argument for them going for both events with different cities. I still think Durban is by and far the most responsible candidate they can throw up for both or either tasks.

I find it so funny how some people talk in here about issues in South Africa and make "facts" based on a few forum and news posts. One important thing to highlight right upfront - South African comments online are generally very negative no matter what the topic because alot of the citizens online have basically nothing positive to ever say about anything. So take alot of it with a bit of skepticism.

Onto the core issues. 2024 v 2028? Frankly it comes down to what the government wants to do. Its years away from making a commitment and we all know that what people say and what they finally do often has zero correlation. So sit back and lets see.

Onto the stadiums. I love the word "White elephant". So often thrown around, so often in the totally wrong context. Yes more can be done to utilise some of the stadiums and yes this planning should have been more thorough upfront. But the performance of each of the stadiums differs drastically - Cape Town stadium being the worst performing from a revenue/cost point of view.

Also public opinion is a funny thing no? it blows every which direction the journalist decides for that particular piece.

personally cant see the city nor country going for a commonwealth games which will then surely push an Olympics out to well in the 2030s/40s. And frankly guys before you continue the Cape Town wishes do some much needing reading up on the CT vs Durban Olympics discussions on here and elsewhere. Cape Town is frankly not a practical choice and politically it is also not a good choice as it is a region controlled by a different party.

To tackle some of the mistruths... The roads that "became tolls after the world cup" were ALWAYS publicly informed that they were were being developed as toll roads before construction on them even started. the fact people are only complaining and wanting them for free now in Johannesburg says alot. Frankly I believe they need to be tolled, its no different from user pay systems on roads all over the world in traffic congested cities.

South Africa with Durban is a likely bid at some point. if it is 2024 great, if it is 2028 ok. The city is moving on and developing regardless.

Dysan, always good to see and hear your posts/POVs. Wish you'd post more often, i.e., if there's more to post.

One quick question though: are there plans to fully develop Durban's harbors w/ an eye to berthing like 6 or 8 cruise ships for some possible event in the future? ;)

Thanks man. If there was more to post on the matter and a likely bid I of course would post more.

The city has currently issue requests for proposals for a big new cruise terminal. The city currently has two cruise ships based in the city for 6 months of the year for Indian ocean cruises... Operated by MSC. MSC have publicly stated that they are very interested in developing and operating this new cruise terminal which is aimed to open in part for the 2015/16 cruise season. The full completion only later in 2016. It will have two permanent berths and an additional two available for peak periods.

This will be developed in the heart of the cities redeveloping point waterfront precinct. The full development of this precinct has been held up for years in legal wrangles over a new small craft harbour that was proposed to be built. Finally at the beginning of this year compromises have been reached and plans have progressed. The revised plans were released last week and look very promising for a vibrant tourist and beach node with a strong commercial element. This and the new cruise terminal will go hand in hand in strenghting this node which has masses of potential. The node has 4 hotel sites. Three direct beach access resort hotels and one iconic 20 floor 5 star hotel at the harbour entrance. This will all add substantial hotel capacity to the node. Notably different from the offering in almost all other Olympic candidate cities in that there are and will be many more beach resort hotels in a city environment to encourage both games activity and time on the beach. This point node would also be the prime venue choice for many ocean sports so could be an Olympic venue as well.

The spaces available in the city are diverse and if some of you dig just a little bit more than you currently do, will find why the city seems appealling for an olympics to those in the know.

In addition, 5km on the other end of the beachfront close to the Moses mabhida stadium, two substantial developments are in the planning stages. The first is the vast expansion of the existing suncoast casino complex. This initially seems like it will be alot of extra gaming and retail, but will also incorporate a new hotel on the beach and either a large theatre or multipurpose venue. The planning of this should be crucial as it will be right in the hub of the potential olympic precinct. Multipurpose in some way would add one more ready Olympic venue with private funds and make the area even more appealing.

The second development on the site next door is the long planned film city campus. This was also held up for nearly a decade in legal proceeding. This has all been resolved and they won their case. They are currently planing what to do with the site and I am sure being so closely tied to the sports precinct any potential city bid, the city is in talks with them to ensure it is somehow symbiotic with sport. So we await to see what this entails.

So alot is going on and This totally excludes the new 15 billion dug out harbour on the old airport, which could open some more temporary berths in the main harbour during a games. It also excludes the cities massive integrated transport system which is under construction which will have a vast network of brt buses. The first phase will be ready in 2015 and the current planned 6 phases all complete long before a 2024 games.

Also there is the rapidly developing umhlanga suburb to the north of the city. This is becoming a major business and tourism node 20km from downtown. Plans are advanced to add 1200 rooms to this area in the next 4 years.

All of this is happening with no connection to a bid, but all of it plays a crucial aiding role a bid by showing the city is getting on regardless, but making sure all the plans have the cities ambition of being one of the worlds top events cities and one of the best places to live outdoors tightly intertwined.
