Galandar Posted June 6, 2013 Report Share Posted June 6, 2013 In the beginning of 2013 it was not clear whether Baku bids for Olympics 2024 or not. It was mainly due to high chances of Istanbul to take the Olympics 2020. However, today Ismayil Ismayilov, deputy minister of the Ministry of youth and sport told to Azerisport.com that Baku considers to bid for the Olympics 2024 and therefore has already started to work on it. This time Baku's bid will be far stronger than its previous 2016 and 2020 bids since in addition to major transformation of city's infrastructure, many of the venues (Olympic stadium, Aquatics Palace, Gymnastics arena etc.) will be put on place. nother positive fact is that Baku will host inagural European games prior to the bid process for the Olympics 2024. All in all, in case Baku bids for the Olympics 2024 it will face much stronger cities than for it had for the 2020 games but taking into account all above-mentioned Baku has also greater chances at least to be shortlisted. The deputy minister only told that they consider bidding and nothing more. In case Istanbul wins Baku is most likely to skip bidding for the Olympics 2024. Lord David Posted June 7, 2013 Report Share Posted June 7, 2013 Well Baku did put their hands up in the last minute for their 2020 bid, so they should do the same for 2024. If Istanbul wins 2020, then it's a no go. By 2015, they would have hosted the first inaugural European Games, so that would be good experience for them. The wealth of venues being constructed for that event will assist in a 2024 bid. If USA, Toronto, Paris, Rome, Istanbuk/Tokyo, Madrid bid, Baku stands no shot at even making the shortlist. So you're saying Istanbul or Tokyo will win 2020 and not Madrid? If that were the case, I think Madrid and the Spanish Olympic Committee (correct? :?) would probably not consider a costly 4th consecutive bid, in spite of all this experience, unless the field was really weak. As for Rome, by bailing out for 2020, despite having much of the work done, they would certainly be penalized in some way or scrutinized should they want to bid for 2024. I know all these events are nothing close to actual summer Olympics yet this would be a great experience for the city and will assist it to build up a good sport and other infrastructure. We all know what 2004 did to a country w/ just 11 million people. Does anyone really think that a nation w/ 9.3 million today can sustain a 21st century SOGs responsibly?? Not only all that, but I just see the compelling arguement for a Baku Olympics. Istanbul offers the same thing, but at a 10-fold. And look how hard it's been for the Turks to snag it in the last 20 years. I just don't see it. All the Azeri's are offering is 'look what the Olympics can do for us' & not what they could do for the Olympic movement. It's a two-way street, & they wanna drive in the same direction in both lanes. Doesn't work that way. *But I just "don't" see the compelling arguement, that was suppose to read. Like the Qatari's, the Azeri's wanna make a name for themselves overnight & are willing to bid & bid & bid for it, regardless if the odds are stacked against them ATM. Tony E Loves Architecture Posted April 10, 2014 Report Share Posted April 10, 2014 I would actually prefer Baku over Doha. Baku is investing large amounts in Sports infrastructure. They are growing more experienced in Hosting Sport Events. Maybe, the IOC might start paying attention to Baku after they Host the 2015 European Games, to see if that will be a success. They are Building a Brand New State of the Art Olympic Stadium, Gymnastics Arena, Aquatics Centre and they have the existing Baku Crystal Hall. Of course, 2024 will be tough for Baku to land, seeing as though Cities like Rome, Paris, Berlin, Durban and possibly Los Angeles are considering Bids, but I would much prefer an Olympic Games in Baku rather then Doha.
