Baku may bid for Olympics 2024

In the beginning of 2013 it was not clear whether Baku bids for Olympics 2024 or not. It was mainly due to high chances of Istanbul to take the Olympics 2020. However, today Ismayil Ismayilov, deputy minister of the Ministry of youth and sport told to Azerisport.com that Baku considers to bid for the Olympics 2024 and therefore has already started to work on it.

This time Baku's bid will be far stronger than its previous 2016 and 2020 bids since in addition to major transformation of city's infrastructure, many of the venues (Olympic stadium, Aquatics Palace, Gymnastics arena etc.) will be put on place. nother positive fact is that Baku will host inagural European games prior to the bid process for the Olympics 2024.

All in all, in case Baku bids for the Olympics 2024 it will face much stronger cities than for it had for the 2020 games but taking into account all above-mentioned Baku has also greater chances at least to be shortlisted.

Why not just wait 3 more months, when the 2020 vote takes place, to see if this is even worthwhile. Since an Istanbul 2020 win would pretty much put a halt on any Baku bid for a while.

True and I guess is the reason they don't confirm it yet. The deputy minister only told that they consider bidding and nothing more. In case Istanbul wins Baku is most likely to skip bidding for the Olympics 2024.

Because South Africa already piped up; so all the 2024 wannabees are also sounding their first trumpet, premature or not. Cue Doha!!

Well Baku did put their hands up in the last minute for their 2020 bid, so they should do the same for 2024.

If Istanbul wins 2020, then it's a no go.

By 2015, they would have hosted the first inaugural European Games, so that would be good experience for them. The wealth of venues being constructed for that event will assist in a 2024 bid.

If USA, Toronto, Paris, Rome, Istanbuk/Tokyo, Madrid bid, Baku stands no shot at even making the shortlist.

So you're saying Istanbul or Tokyo will win 2020 and not Madrid? If that were the case, I think Madrid and the Spanish Olympic Committee (correct? :?) would probably not consider a costly 4th consecutive bid, in spite of all this experience, unless the field was really weak.

As for Rome, by bailing out for 2020, despite having much of the work done, they would certainly be penalized in some way or scrutinized should they want to bid for 2024.

Baku is growing stronger and stronger, if they don't make the cut for 2024, then they certainly would for 2028.

Btw after European Games 2015, Baku is going to host 2017 Ismalic Solidarity Games and the city is also bidding for Universiade 2019. I know all these events are nothing close to actual summer Olympics yet this would be a great experience for the city and will assist it to build up a good sport and other infrastructure.

Helsinki, Finland 61 years ago was the last country w/ less than 10 million people, to host a Summer Olympic Games w/ 4,879 athletes, 69 nations and probably 500 press members or so; and when those Games may have cost just $50 mil (est) . We all know what 2004 did to a country w/ just 11 million people. Does anyone really think that a nation w/ 9.3 million today can sustain a 21st century SOGs responsibly??:rolleyes:

Not only all that, but I just see the compelling arguement for a Baku Olympics. Istanbul offers the same thing, but at a 10-fold. And look how hard it's been for the Turks to snag it in the last 20 years. I just don't see it. All the Azeri's are offering is 'look what the Olympics can do for us' & not what they could do for the Olympic movement. It's a two-way street, & they wanna drive in the same direction in both lanes. Doesn't work that way.

*But I just "don't" see the compelling arguement, that was suppose to read.

If I were they I would wait if Istanbul get the 2020 games or not. Cuz if they do, a Baku bid has very low chances to get it (and well, Baku is for me less annoying than Doha, believing they will also buy votes from the IOC like they did with FIFA)

Baku aims for Olympics buzz with Euro 2020 bid

DUBROVNIK, Croatia — Azerbaijan hopes that bidding to stage 2020 European Championship matches will promote Baku after it was twice rejected by the IOC as a candidate city for the Olympics.

UEFA said Friday that Azerbaijan is among 32 member countries aiming to be part of the 13-nation Euro 2020 hosting project.

Elkhan Mammadov, the Azerbaijan Football Association secretary general, told The Associated Press that a successful Euro 2020 bid could build momentum for a third shot at a chance to host the Olympics.

"I believe yes," Mammadov said in an interview on the sidelines of a four-day UEFA gathering. "It will bring some guarantees. It will destroy some doubts in some people."

UEFA will choose 13 host cities next September. One will host the final and semifinals, and the other 12 will each stage three group matches and one knockout match at the 24-team tournament.

Azerbaijan is proposing the 68,000-capacity Baku Olympic Stadium, which will be completed ahead of hosting events at the first European Games in 2015.

The stadium was the intended center of the 2016 and 2020 Olympics but Baku failed to reach the IOC's candidates shortlist.

Using revenue from its oil and gas reserves, Azerbaijan has been an increasingly active bidder for sports events, and state oil company SOCAR is a main sponsor of the football body.

Azerbaijan state president Ilham Aliyev has already signed off on full government support for the Euro 2020 project, Mammadov said.

Aliyev also leads his nation's Olympic committee and is expected to propose Baku for hosting the 2024 Summer Games.

"These kinds of events are breeding more trust," said Mammadov, who helped organize the women's Under-17 World Cup last year.

For the FIFA event, Azerbaijan brought Jennifer Lopez to headline the opening ceremony concert and Shakira performed at the final.

The success of Azerbaijan's Euro 2020 bid could depend on having a nearby partner country to co-host one of the six groups. Neighboring Turkey is bidding only for the final match package.

As long as the nouveau-riche ex-communists aka Aliyev clan rule Azerbaijan and its oil reserves, they will do anything to show off, and be it with more desperate and futile attempts for the Olympics. If they were to host in 2024, it would be for the same reasons that Qatar got WC 2022.

We want to apply for hosting 2024 Olympic Games - Azerbaijani minister

Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov spoke about the close ties between Azerbaijan and Turkey in the field of sports and noted that our country would like to apply for hosting 2024 Olympics.

"We have very close relations with our fraternal country Turkey, including in matters of sport”, Sport.1news.az quotes the minister as saying to Anadolu agency. “We are very happy to cooperate. It's not just training and friendly matches, but also partnership on the level of sportsmen, coaches and referee.

We are honored to host the 1st European Games 2015. We are very excited and actively preparing. It is a great experience for us. Azerbaijan hosted a number of international competitions, but this will be the first-ever multi-sport event.

Judo and boxing are very popular in Azerbaijan, we have strong teams in women’s volleyball. Artistic gymnastics, rowing, cycling have gained more popularity over the past years. But wrestling is on the first place..

We have the ability to create the conditions for training sportsmen in different climatic conditions.

We claimed to host the Olympic Games of 2016 and 2020, but failed to win. Now we analyze the reasons of the loss. There are two important reasons for this. First, a lack of experience, since we never hosted complex competitions . Second, culture of sport must be very high in a country to host the Olympics. Some countries build numerous facilities for the Olympics which then stay empty. It is necessary to create an Olympic spirit in the country.

We want to apply for hosting 2024 Olympics. Thanks to the European games we will get a great experience. I am watching the games played by "Fenerbahce", "Besiktas" and “Galatasaray”, but in order not to offend any of our Turkish friends, I won’t name the favorite”, he said.

I don't find it that surprising. I'd find it surprising if they wouldn't want to go for 2024. Like the Qatari's, the Azeri's wanna make a name for themselves overnight & are willing to bid & bid & bid for it, regardless if the odds are stacked against them ATM. Unless that's all the IOC is left with, all things considered. And I'm sure at some point soon, we're gonna be hearing the same from Doha.

I would actually prefer Baku over Doha. Baku is investing large amounts in Sports infrastructure. They are growing more experienced in Hosting Sport Events. Maybe, the IOC might start paying attention to Baku after they Host the 2015 European Games, to see if that will be a success. They are Building a Brand New State of the Art Olympic Stadium, Gymnastics Arena, Aquatics Centre and they have the existing Baku Crystal Hall. Of course, 2024 will be tough for Baku to land, seeing as though Cities like Rome, Paris, Berlin, Durban and possibly Los Angeles are considering Bids, but I would much prefer an Olympic Games in Baku rather then Doha.
