baron-pierreIV Posted May 28, 2013 Report Posted May 28, 2013 OK, who's going to see FIRST, the Official documentary film about London 2012 and the first NON-Bud Greenspan official doc film? First screening in movie theatres in the US is May 30. http://www.fathomevents.com/?utm_source=USOC&utm_medium=Banner&utm_campaign=FIRST#!first Prices aren't too bad $11.50 and $12.50 only. Hmmmm...maybe I'll go see it.
JMarkSnow2012 Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 "First" has only just arrived in US cinemas? I've had the UK DVD version for months. It's very enjoyable if you're in the right frame of mind.

It's very enjoyable if you're in the right frame of mind. Oh, the DVD might have been already available...but I'm not aware that it was promoted. And the fact that it will play on a Thursday nite shows the import or available booking slot that the major US theatre chain has allotted for it. Is there considerable ceremonial footage? Because if it's just all about the 12 athletes, fuggedaboutit!
JMarkSnow2012 Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 Is there considerable ceremonial footage? Because if it's just all about the 12 athletes, fuggedaboutit! The OC in particular is used quite a lot to provide atmosphere- the way it's filmed is rather lovely.
baron-pierreIV Posted May 29, 2013 Author Report Posted May 29, 2013 The OC in particular is used quite a lot to provide atmosphere- the way it's filmed is rather lovely. OK, I'm holding you to it, JMark. It better be good. Otherwise, you'll owe me!!
baron-pierreIV Posted May 30, 2013 Author Report Posted May 30, 2013 Uh-oh. Not a very positive review on the ONLY review of the flick on IMDB. And it's from a Brit no less. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2291230/reviews?ref_=tt_urv Awwwk, having computer probs. Can't reprint the review! I wonder if the IOC has blocked my copy functions??? Well, maybe I'll go see it tonite...and then walk out after 45 minutes and ask for my $$ back.
baron-pierreIV Posted May 31, 2013 Author Report Posted May 31, 2013 Walked out after 20 mins. Too fragmented; not enuf ceremony in that time...and whatever there was...was too artsy. And having 12 subjects....just because it's 2012 was just too much. I mean their stories are all basically the same, at heart.
JMarkSnow2012 Posted May 31, 2013 Report Posted May 31, 2013 Oops- wrong frame of mind! But really- 12 athletes out of more than 10,000 was too many? Their stories defintiely weren't "basically the same" except to the extent that they were all Olympic competitors.
baron-pierreIV Posted May 31, 2013 Author Report Posted May 31, 2013 - 12 athletes out of more than 10,000 was too many? So, would 3,566 stories out of 10,000 still be OK??? I mean, don't they all strive to be "...the best they can be..." regardless of circumstances? How about one who throws in the towel a few months before the Games start, and only goes there to have a good time? I think that's a unique Olympic story worth telling! Also, BTW, saw a shot from one of the upper reaches of the Swim Centre...and as I thought, that dark ceiling of Hadid really looms large like a whale's belly, over those seats and looked very oppressive.
JMarkSnow2012 Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 So, would 3,566 stories out of 10,000 still be OK??? How about... set a basic format and ask the national Olympic Committees to produce short video profiles of every athlete in their teams before the games! For a more limited pan-Olympic project, a look at each of the sport categories should work. I mean, don't they all strive to be "...the best they can be..." regardless of circumstances? How about one who throws in the towel a few months before the Games start, and only goes there to have a good time? I think that's a unique Olympic story worth telling! Yes, I agree that would be fun, but if it is filmed, it probably won't happen more than once. Also, BTW, saw a shot from one of the upper reaches of the Swim Centre...and as I thought, that dark ceiling of Hadid really looms large like a whale's belly, over those seats and looked very oppressive. Remember, when the Aquatic Centre was designed, nearly a decade ago, there were not supposed to be any "upper reaches". The dark ceiling, as I understand it, is to reduce reflection on the water.
Sir Rols Posted June 3, 2013 Report Posted June 3, 2013 Also, BTW, saw a shot from one of the upper reaches of the Swim Centre...and as I thought, that dark ceiling of Hadid really looms large like a whale's belly, over those seats and looked very oppressive. I was up in those reaches, and it wasn't too bad. It didn't feel dark at all, had pretty decend sight lines of the action, and wasn't too steep as to give one vertigo. Sydney, where we did te same thing, felt a bit more oppressive I thought. Worst nosebleed seats I ever had was basketball at Atlanta in the Dome with USA versus Lithuania. Was like looking at ants on a sidewalk, and It felt like the edge of a steep precipice.
baron-pierreIV Posted June 3, 2013 Author Report Posted June 3, 2013 Oh not that the seating area was dark, but as I saw it on the large screen, that looming ceiling of the main permanent structure just seemed like some dark, ominous cloud hanging over the pool area and also BLOCKED off the sight of the gallery on the other side. That's the view I got from the film.
