Olympian Danka Bartekova named as youngest-ever Chair of an Olympic Coordination Commission

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced the composition of the IOC Coordination Commission for Lausanne 2020, the third Winter Youth Olympic Games.

IOC President Thomas Bach has appointed as Chair Slovakia’s Danka Bartekova, who will lead the experienced team of Commission members responsible for assisting and guiding the Lausanne Organising Committee in their preparations. Danka, the youngest IOC Member and Olympic bronze medallist in shooting (skeet) at London 2012, is currently enrolled in a PhD at the University of Matej Bel, Banska Bystrica, Slovakia. She will be the youngest ever Chair of a Coordination Commission. and is also on the Coordination Commission for the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018.

Members of the Coordination Commission, with its gender balance, represent the stakeholders of the Olympic Movement, including athletes, National Olympic Committees and International Federations. They act as a link between the Organising Committee and other Olympic Movement stakeholders, thereby ensuring the coordination necessary to help deliver yet another successful edition of the Youth Olympic Games.

The full Commission is composed as follows: IOC Members Sergey Bubka – who was Chair of the Singapore 2010 Coordination Commission – Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, Secretary General of the Turkish Olympic Committee and Member of ANOC Executive Council Nese Gündogan, CEO of Lillehammer 2016 Tomas Holmestad and FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis.

“This youthful Commission will be very much aligned with the youthful sports-loving spirit of the City of Lausanne. The philosophy of these Youth Olympic Games, with their close link between sport and education, will be a perfect fit for the Olympic Capital,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.

The first meeting of the IOC Coordination Commission for Lausanne 2020 will be convened in October 2016.
