GBModerator
The IOC has had first-hand experience with the city holding it's 2009 IOC session there where PyeongChang won it's 2018 bid. So the IOC (which are the ones that vote anyway) already know about it. And with bid-city visits no longer allowed, that's a leg up that Durban already has. This first-hand IOC experience can go either way. Have you asked any IOC members about their experience in Durban during the IOC session in 2011? FYI
Have you? This news piece describes how the Durban IOC session was very successful, & how South Africa in general is highly regarded in the sports world. Meaningful credentials, I'd say. http://www.southafrica.net/media/en/news/entry/news-media-and-stakeholder-successful-ioc-session-another-south-african-spo#.UZE7S7e9Kc0

Athensfan
Maybe it he knows something about the "dealbreaker" stadium Toronto is planning. What he wrote seemed to obliquely suggest that not everyone in the IOC liked their time in Durban. Then again, he didn't come straight out and say that so perhaps he's just messing with us. No way to be sure.

Sounds like he was hinting that it didn't go as smoothly as was generally reported.

Although, regarding the stadium, I have heard that it is planned to hold 110,000.

ofan
If Toronto gets the games, the leafs will win the cup in 2025. Everytime Canada has hosted, the host city's NHL team made the Stanley Cup Finals the next year.

Meaningful credentials, I'd say. http://www.southafrica.net/media/en/news/entry/news-media-and-stakeholder-successful-ioc-session-another-south-african-spo#.UZE7S7e9Kc0 This piece quotes Rogge being his diplomatic self. The "general feeling" (without naming names, they were off the record) in Durban was that there is still much work to do. This has nothing to do with the organization of the session itself, but whether the city is able to effectively accommodate the Games.
paul
Durban is overstated as an imminent host, but the weather is much better than cold Cape Town for games time and they have a stadium, and it’s in Africa. So if they want to pour all their resources into a fabulous games I’m sure they could pull off a 2 week party. But is it worth the investment and can they make money, or will the Olympics cripple them with debt like happens so often? Population is only ½ a million….seriously?? South Africa’s entire gdp is similar to Houston! ……..BUT…….it is Africa and would probably be a fascinating games with all the history and culture of Africa to draw on. And Rogge is his diplomatic self with the likes of Cuba & Kenya, but when it comes to South Africa, he's to the point of being encouraging & almost pushy at times. And it's not just Rogge, but even other highly regarded figures like Sebastian Coe also see Africa as a potential host & is also onboard. Almost any city would have a lot of work to do, even in the developed world. Doesn't mean that it can't be accomplished, though, 2024 is still 11 years away. Why are you associating "fabulous Games" with Africa. I'm sure that the IOC realizes that if they go there, that they're going to have to make some concessions, just like they did with Rio. I'm sure that they wouldn't be expected to splurge on the scale of Beijing or Sochi. And seriously! Where are you getting your info from. The Durban urban area is more than just "half a mil". It's 3.5 million, comparable to your precious Atlanta when they hosted the Games. And South Africa's GDP is still twice that of Greece & Texas' is comparable to Canada's but that still doesn't stop all the Toronto boosters from boasting about the Olympics. I've said this many times, but again, an Olympics in Africa wouldn't be about "glamour Games". It would mainly be about finally bringing the Olympics to the last continent that's yet to host. And I'm sure that the IOC is not that dump to expect such a Beijing-like extravaganza from the South Africans.
Athensfan
The story Rob posted contained this quote: "While officially the South African Government has for the moment ruled out a bid for the 2020 Olympic Games, there was no doubt in Durban that South Africas credentials as sporting hosts are highly regarded and that the Olympic movement would seriously consider an African Olympic bid. While officially the South African Government has for the moment ruled out a bid for the 2020 Olympic Games, there was no doubt in Durban that South Africas credentials as sporting hosts are highly regarded and that the Olympic movement would seriously consider an African Olympic bid.The IOC welcomes a strong African Olympic bid and it goes without saying that they will put a strong one together, even if this may not necessarily be for the 2020 Games, Rogge added." To me, there's nothing in there that signals "much left to be done." I'm sure there IS much left to be done, I just don't see it clearly in this story. If you substitute "France" for "South Africa", the quote still makes sense.
