mattygs
So we have our logo, which a lot of people seem to either dislike mildly or despise. However, we have seen a few logos in past Games where the look appears to rescue them and present a far more logical brand to go with them. Perhaps more than others, we have been presented with a direction of look that this logo may take us, but Im not so sure. While the application of coloured sticks everywhere may make some people a little happier with where this logo may go, Im thinking that a completely opposite style of graphical look is required to make this logo a success. I think having this logo paired up with graphics of a sticklike nature is going to be abit too much , and maybe even abit cold. I can certainly see the stick graphic working well with the pictograms for both sports and other aspects of the Games (ceremonies, culture, environment etc etc), but Im not overly impressed by the promo videos application on field of play. So, any kind of ideas on what kind of look POCOG should come up with to try and make this logo work?
Olympian2004
I suppose (if they have any sense for design left, that is) that they will contrast that sticklike logo with a curvy look or at least something typical for Asian strife for harmony. In fact, it could be some sort of "Winter Beijing" with something similar to Beijing's "Lucky Clouds". Remember the design of Seoul 1988's logo - it also conveys harmony and the "getting together" due to its round, curvy and concentric or spirally nature. That's also the reason why I'm so appalled by Pyeongchang's logo - because it completely contradicts Seoul's style and also what I perceived as Korean style in general. Athensfan
I actually think that some of their animations suggest a look that could be somewhat whimsical and unifying. The colored stick images have a certain consistency and playfulness to them. I don't think this will improve the PC logo, but I do think it could result in a unique and enjoyable overall aesthetic. My one reservation is that the design seems fairly dependent on a white background and all that white is unlikely to result in energizing environments. It's quite the contrast to something like Torino which was so vibrant.
Rob2012
Do exactly what Vancouver did. Develop a look that has not a lot to do with the logo (i.e. in this case don't carry forward the pick-up-sticks idea), and just use the logo sparingly always surrounded by white space. There's lots and lots of scope for these Games to look great, despite the logo, just as Vancouver looked great despite its logo.
mattygs
Agreed Rob. That is the way to go, the model to follow.
Athensfan
Hm. I actually kind of like the pickup sticks look. Going with a totally different aesthetic (like Vancouver) can make the logo stick out like a sore thumb and seems to visually acknowledge that it was a mistake. The colored stick figures could actually help the logo feel more integrated and intentional. Working with rather than against.
runningrings
I love the pick up sticks look- the mountains, the clouds, with the Olympic Rings on a background of white. It could look ridiculously fun, whimsical and classy all in one. I hope PC stays on path, and gives something new like London did instead of the usual wave and strokes of different colours. Athensfan has nailed it here, a Vancouver style branding wouldn't suit this type of logo, and as we've already seen it appears that organisers have a fair idea how its going to be applied into other areas. If the logo and the look were the only things worry about I might agree, but they're not. DarJoLe mentioned in the London Look thread that the IOC were very keen that the Olympic rings were given more focus in London - that they became the centre of the visual branding. If you have a logo in Olympic colours and a Look in Olympic colours, what do you then do with the rings? You put them in Olympic colours and they'll look lost (see Ikarus' current signature), you put them in one colour and they might stand out but you're in a weird situation where everything but the Olympic rings is in the Olympic colours. If they continue with the minimalist pick-up-sticks look maybe they should go with a completely different colour palette from the two logos; sky blues, purples and pinks maybe? The rings will never look lost for one simple reason: they're circles. If PC goes with a pickup sticks look, every shape will be made of straight lines -- except the rings. Color isn't the only way to differentiate. We normally think that way first because its more common in daily life, but in this case shape will provide plenty of contrast. THAT actually is a very creative and interesting design idea.
Lord David
Do exactly what Vancouver did. There's lots and lots of scope for these Games to look great, despite the logo, just as Vancouver looked great despite its logo. I can see one slight problem with this approach. Vancouver did not use the main Olympic colours in its main logo design. Where PyeongChang has. This could tempt potential designers to use such a colour palette for their look of the games, which would spell disaster IMO.
