Sir Ben Ainsley has formally launched Team GB today in that country's latest attempt to win the Americas Cup.

Sir Ben was credited as the secret weapon that helped Oracle retain the Americas Cup in last year's regatta.

Personally IMO, if Team New Zealand fails to get off the mark this year...they should throw their support fully behind Team GB. They are the logical choice. Just can't see Artimus, Allinghi, Team Australia, or the beloved Prada Challenge taking on Oracle with any success.

Chicago will realllllly stretch the "Arm of the Sea" law...Eire Canal being that arm. But then ths great lakes are pretty much massive fresh water seas anyway.

Yeah, fresh water doesn't offer the same buoyancy .

Chicago is just an idea at the moment...more the fact that Boeing is one of Oracle's sponsors and have their HQ there.

Totally different sailing conditions, but remember that these yachts foil pretty much for 90% of a race, so it's all about the wind.

Any way...the three venues shortlisted:

Chicago

San Diego

Hamilton (Bermuda)

As can be seen, San Francisco is out...they just couldn't justify spending money on it.

Well, Chicago has been dropped from the 2017 hosting bidding process.

It's now just down to San Diego and Bermuda. The bidding process will end in November with major sponsors probably twisting arms for San Diego yet Bermuda has the tax breaks.

BREAKING NEWS.

Team Australia has pulled out of the 2017 America's Cup citing the tremendous costs in mounting a challenge simply too high.

ORACLE USA Racing boss, Sir Russel Coutts made the announcment earlier today and the hunt is now on for a new Challenger of Record most likely to be offered to Artemus Racing or Emirates Team New Zealand.

The Royal New Zealand Yatch Squadron has lodged it's official challenger entry forms to America's Cup 35 officials in which Emirates Team New Zealand will be the yacht squadron's offical challenger. They had until Saturday 9 August 2014 to apply.

So far the only other challengers are Italy's Luna Rossa Challenge, UKs Team GB, and Sweeden's Artemus Team Racing.

Sadly Australia's Team Australia pulled out of the future regatta in June sighting tremendous cost to even get started with the current players already a generation ahead in development.
