I used to think all olympic symbols were restricted to its respective game/city/year by charter and things like mascot costumes had to be dismantled. Then again this is supossed to be a simple event and it would be silly to spend huge sums of money on it Also it wouldn't be a dutch ceremony if there weren't DJ's PS: Wasn't the EYOF the precursors of the YOG? Btw, despite that half assed torch I liked the tribute to Geesink with his son lightning the cauldron. The music section is not bad as well. English is compulsery in secondary education. [age 12-16/17] Nowedays with tv and internet most of the youth speak English very well. Besides English, I also learnt German and a little bit French in school. [The Netherlands is a small country which is highly dependent on foreign trade. SUCCESSFUL EYOF UTRECHT 2013 OFFICIALLY CLOSED 19 July 2013, 23:00The Olympic Flame was officially extinguished tonight in Utrecht by Tournament Director Pieter van den Hoogenband and CEO Henny Smorenburg. This marked the end of the twelfth edition of the European Youth Olympic Festival. The Organising Committee is very pleased with what has been five sunny days in Utrecht. The week saw many athletic highlights and 40,000 spectators. Mayor Mr. Aleid Wolfsen handed over the EOC Flag to his counterpart from Tblisi, Mr. George Ugulava. In two years time the next edition will be held in his city. EOC President Mr. Patrick Hickey thanked everyone for what he called a ‘fabulous event’. More than 40,000 visitorsThe number of visitors exceeded the expectations of the Organising Committee. During the last two days the stands were full at most venues. According to first estimates – a lot of tickets for the finals were sold on the last day – the matches and Opening Ceremony were attended by more than 40,000 people. This doesn’t include the people watching the cycling races among Het Lint racing track on Tuesday and Thursday. The count also excludes all the athletes that came to support their team mates in other events. Medal TallyAfter the closing the Olympic event Russia leads the medal tally with 56 medals (30 gold). Especially in the swimming tournament this team seemed unbeatable: they won all the relay events. Russia was followed by Great-Britain and France, both with nine gold medals. The Netherlands ended on the seventh place, with a total of twenty medals, of which four gold: Lisa Müllenberg (judo), Amber Gersjes (judo), Hilde Jager (judo) and Tasa Jiya (athletics). 690 medal winnersDuring five days 690 medals were awarded among the 2,300 talented young athletes from 49 European countries. They competed in nine Olympic disciplines at seven different locations in the city Utrecht. The results below are not yet final and subject to change. One of the largest convention centers in The Netherlands. During the EYOF the handball, volleyball and judo tournaments were held here. Court 1 Germany - Austria Bronze medal match girls.
