I've always questioned why the Dalai Lama and his cronies in Tibet have been wanting peaceful independence? China has given them all this modernization since their takeover in the 50's. Any form of independence would see a "Tibet" become a backwards nation, where the Dalai and the elite live off rich, and everyone else is poor.
