intoronto 650
atr: On Friday, reports surfaced that the city’s mayor, Xavier Trias, had met with IOC president Thomas Bach on Wednesday. Trias claimed Bach told the mayor to bid for the 2026 Olympics. "His advice wasn't criticism but aid aimed at giving us a better chance of winning," the mayor’s office was quoted as saying in a statement. He added that while he wants a 2022 bid, " if that's not possible, then we'll try for 2026." What does this mean? A strong lock for 2022 already?Non European 2022 winner ? StefanMUC 702
It means nothing more than the mayor interpreting some diplomatic wording from Bach in such a way to let him continue with his WOG ambitions for a couple more years. 2022 will be in Europe - Asia has been served (Almaty really probably only a test run for later), NZ says it's not suitable, US made clear they aim for 2024, Canada probably also for Summer. So, unless a South American surprise that shocks and awes everyone comes out of a magic hat, there's no way around Europe - making BCN for 2026 even less likely than it would have been for 2022. But that's probably nothing the mayor wants to hear or think of.
markun 74
I agree entirely. 2022 will be in Europe.
FYI 1206
Exactly. I don't see how 2026 would be better for Barcelona when 2022 is very, very likely going to Europe. They only way it's not, is if no one in Europe bids, which is very unlikely.
cube 11
Well, Bach want as much bidders as possible for each circle he learned from Rogge, Rogge encouraged every City/Country to bid
jesufer3 1
Now it is official, Barcelona will no bid for the 2022 Winter Games http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2013/10/25/barcelona/1382686998.html
yoshi 353
That was obvious. Just imagine this: Barcelona bid; 'We'd like you to give us the Olympics in 2022. We don't know what country we'll be in in 2022, but you should give us the Games anyway'
Rob. 2046
Isn't that more or less the same as Glasgow's 2018 YOG bid?

I think what mayor Trias was NOT reading in Bach's advice was that...Spaniards can save themselves a lot of heartache by just letting 2022 slide by. Too much Spanish bidding in other words...and it seems the body of the IOC in the 2nd decade of the 2000s is NOT quite up for a Spanish hosting again. So, Bach was really try to help the Spanish save face. Now, it's up to the Spaniards -- do they want to be Castilians or Catalunyas or Spanish first???
hektor 87
I hate when politicians do that. Everybody knows the 2022 Games will take place in Europe. So you can forget about Barcelona 2026.
StefanMUC 702
I think it was the sensible thing to skip 2022. Barcelona would have been an outsider, and would probably only have delivered another disappointment for Spain and waste of money for nothing. 2026 will likely be outside Europe, but by 2030 maybe Spain could establish itself more in the IOC's minds as a winter sports country, which could increase chances of a bid.
