What is the nonsense about 'winter cities?' Because of the growth of the games only larger cities can be host.

FACT

Barcelona is 150km from the nearest ski resorts with 800m vertical and there are BOTH rail and road links

FACT

Oslo is 130km from the nearest hill big enough Norefjell

FACT

Denver is 160km from Vail

FACT

Vancouver is 127km from Whistler

BTW

if you think that Paris or Sydney or Atlanta are within 150km of a mountain with the necessary vertical to host the alpine events, then you should invest in an atlas !!!

For European people distance aren't the same than North American People. Barcelona is too far from mountains to be realistic... Never Barcelona will be winter host. Pyrenees could be a new frontier in Europa but with another bid, Spain, France or Andore ?

If CIO say "Yes" to this kind of bid, it will be the end to traditional European medium city bid, like in Austria, Switzerland, Sweden...

I can't imagine to have a bid with Lyon in France, or Milano in Italia... I think will lose the spirit of winter games definitively...

Since when is Oslo in North America? At the least it is 20km (12miles) only between the mountain and Oslo compared to Barcelona and La Molina (130km v 150km)

And For Your Information the proposed Munich 2018 bid involved events at Schonau au Konigsee and Garmisch is 200km - 25% longer than the proposed Barcelona venues

When you think of Barcelona, you think of sunny mediterranean beaches. I dont think it will work, Jaca or Zaragoza sound more "winterish"

Jaca has only 15,000 population and is TOO SMALL

Zaragoza is further from the nearest suitable vertical drop than Barcelona is

At the moment we haven't got Oslo bid or plan... 120 km it's far, I'm agree. But some Snow Venue are in Oslo.

About Munich it's different, it's only Bobsleig etc. and it's to avoid to build another Bobsleig track nearest to Munich. And lot of European bid will do that if they bid.

But About Barcelone it's all Snow venues whom are to 150 km, it's 2h from Barcelona, it's too much for European bid. And Barcelona won't be winter city, you can't compare with Vancouver or Sotchi. Spain has other options and better than Barcelona to bid to WoG.

CIO couldn't continue only with big city to WoG. In Europe you lot of middle size cities able to host WoG in perfect condition.

1. Germany already has 4 bobsleigh runs, the most of any country. A fifth would not be economic

2. Which other better options for Spain? The Sierra Nevada cannot guarantee snow, Zaragoza is even further from the mountains than Barcelona with much poorer links.

3. The IOC can only go with cities who bid. Their own minimum requirements - 2 indoor venues of 10,000 plus, a speed skating track of 8,000, a 6,000 seat area, a 3,000 seat arena and a mimumum number of hotel rooms rule out a lot of locations - look at Ostersund in Sweden .... forget the idea that Europe can use small locations especially when they are competing with large cities in North America and Asia .... this is why Munich not Garmisch may be biding.

Look Pyeongchang, it's a small city, smaller than Ostersund, and before their bid they had nothing. Medium cities can bid in Europe because in lot of these cities you have a majority of venues already build. And excepted Munich tell me where you have a city with more than 1 millions people in Europe near to mountains (100km) ? In France, in Switzerland, Austria etc. Medium cities are able to host WOG.

Are you still all up in arms over Annecy's loss. How many times must it be mentioned that PyeongChang is mostly the Alpine setting, akin to Krasnaya Polyana & Whistler. Gangneung (roughly the same size as Sochi) is hosting the ice events. Why do you always conveniently forget that. The Winter Olympics have gotten bigger & therefore are requiring larger settings necessary to host them. PyeongChang is not hosting alone.

Please stop being 100% inaccurate ... Pyeongchang is actually a county name ... the actual township is called Daegwallyeong-myeon, and the indoor ice events are being held in the coastal city of Gangneung which has a population of over 230,000 people and a fast link to Seoul's 5million+

It is interesting that you mention Ostersund. Despite it being the largest city in inland Northern Sweden with a population of 60,000, they have found it absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to but forward a bid as there is the risk of how to use the facilities afterwards. Some temp buildings are ok, but the IOC want legacy.

In Switzerland, they have attempted and failed to get a bid together with a city as large as Berne. In Austria they are struggling to hold a bid on their own hence their attempts to put together cross border bids with Italy and Slovenia. In France, one of the keener bidders is Nice, hardly a winter city and with a metro population of over 1million people.

It is not about whether a city can ... its about whether they want to .. and only the likes of Barcelona and Munich are rich enough to use all these facilities after the games.

What do you think about Sion, Salzbourg or Annecy ? All these cities are able to host WoG in perfect condition and even better than PC or Sotchi, they have some of the best world venues in each winter sports and they have the capacity to welcome lot of supporters and tourists... These cities are in the middle of Europe and there would have more fervor than in PC or Sotchi.

Sotchi and PC are totally artificial, after WoG there will be nothing there excepted white Elephant, and some rich people in Sotchi. Alpensia in PC is already in Bankrupt, even Korean doesn't care WoG or Alpine sports... If IOC has choose these cities is only because Russia and Korea promess them lot of money and bribes.

The problem isn't the size or the capacity to host WOG but only money you will put on the table and actually Europe can't spend too much money like Russia or Korea.

I don't think Spain will bid with Barcelona or other city in 2022

Then Tulsa, you should belong to an MEOC - a Middle European Olympic Committee, consisting of only THREE Alpine countries.

You TOTALLY miss the idea of "International." 75 winter nations must be too much 4 u; let alone the full 204 IOC membership. .

Actually, there is a 4th country that can join your EXCLUSIVE club...

What do Sion, Salzburg and Annecy have in common?

They all bid ... and they all failed

Sion lost to the larger Turin

Salzburg lost to the larger Sochi

Annecy came behind the larger Munich and Pyeonchang locations.

These cities hasn't lost because they are smaller than Turin or Sochi... ( for information : Annecy is bigger than PC or Gangneung, more over Annecy area population is more important than Sochi... They lost because they haven't offer enough money to CIO... It's the only reason. Sochi is totally crazy like WoG, Excepted China or Petroleum countries nobody can spend money for WoG or SoG like Sochi.

and Barcelona has got a boost as the Oslo bid has proposed to use a number of facilities in Lillehammer including the Kvitjell downhill course which is a whopping 238km from Oslo and takes over 3hrs

http://www.newsinenglish.no/2013/03/07/oslo-rolls-out-its-olympic-plans/

In this case Oslo bids is too spread to be realistic. But at the moment Oslo hasn't bid yet.

Excepted Munich there are no city able to host WoG in 2022 with a realistic and credible bid.

So essentially the IOC succumbed to bribery then?

Munich has not officially bid for 2022. The only city which remotely has an official bid going is Barcelona

And if you want to include the region to increase the size of Annecy's population you should do that with Sochi and Pyeongchang.

Sochi and its region has a population of 5million plus

Pyeongchang has a regional population as part of Gangwon of 1.5million+

Sochi is 340 000 population, 5 millions it's the region (but this region is bigger than Switzerland) you can't compare with Annecy Region. Sochi is a medium city like PC/gangneung or Annecy and lot other Alpine cities. But if you would like compare with Annecyn it's only 2h30 from Paris (In Train), and with Geneva (20 min from Annecy) it's bigger than Sochi or PC... But it isn't the problem. Never Annecy will win if they don't spend money stupidly

like Sochi or PC.

Barcelona or Munich are very different about their size, it's like Turin, Salt Lake City or Vancouver.

But the question still is: will Spain go with a 4th consecutive Olympic bid??

Well considering Jaca bid in 1998, 2002, 2010 and 2014 ... and Madrid in 2012, 2016 and 2020 we are looking at 7 bids close together. At a certain point this will count for something

Bullshit !

We won't have Barcelona 2022 bid. It's too crazy. I'm waiting Munich 2022

So those don't really count as Official, legitimate bids.

Depends on what you mean by official I guess! I think an applicant city is still an official bid. I wouldn't say because it doesn't make the candidate city list it becomes any less official.
