pcelica
Hello, everyone, I joined this forum to present my hopes of Belgrade hosting Olympic games one day. My avatar says Belgrade 2028, but it is pretty impossible . I am not sure even for 2032, because we need to improve economy a lot, so our target should be 2036 games, but let's say 2032-2036, because economy must improve with or without games anyway. Something about Belgrade: - the city proper has a population of over 1.2 million; 1.65 million people live within the administrative limits, making it one of the largest cities of Southeastern Europe - nominated for European Capital of Culture 2020 - One of the most important prehistoric cultures of Europe, the Vinča culture, evolved within the Belgrade area in the 6th millennium BC - old city, many times ruined and rebuilt - located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers - hosted various sports events in most of the Summer OG sports - of multi sports events hosted 2007 EYOF and 2009 Universiade - 2008 Eurovision Song Contest - twice was Olympic candidat, in 1992 when came 4th and 1996 promo videos for Belgrade 1992 (first taken in 1986): Some photos of the city:
pcelica
Another reason, besides expirience in organizing big events is sport spirit, Belgrade knows to appriciate successes, we always make celebrations for our athletes in forn of the city hall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBraB6359TI

The smallest countries in recent years to be able to hostan OG were, as you well know, Australia and Greece. And u know what happened to Greece after hosting the Games. baron-pierreIV
T Yes, and that's stupid, because only rich can host It's not stupid because it costs gazillions to host it. Plus, what will a small country do with dozens of huge stadia and athletic faciltiies? A large country has a large population to use these facilities. pcelica
Let's present some venues that Belgrade has Indoor Arenas: Belgrade Arena 20.000-25.000 Pionir Hall (8.150) Partizan basketball club play here, the best atmosphere in the world: Hala Sportova (5,000) There are much more arenas but capacity less than 5000 seats. Athletics Hall is in building process, (7200km2), judo and wrestling coule be held there for example should look like this: Belgrade Fair (sorry for bad photo, i can't find better that showes more than Hall 1) large complex of three large domes and dozens of smaller (there can be about 13,000 seats, 5,000 and one more of 5,000) Tasmajdan pool During the 2006 EC in water polo i found there were 6,000 fans, so water polo could be held there 2006 water polo EC: There are more Olympic pools in Belgrade, but with less sitting capacity, so Aquastic center needs to be built SRC Milan Gale Muskatirovic (tennis), this is the venue of Serbia Open ATP tournament cental court seating capacity 9,000 Novak tennis center and National tennis academy are in plans Kovilovo shooting range: This complex, ranked as one of the best in the whole world, consists of 6 shooting ranges for Skeet, Trap and Double Trap events and of one sporting compact shooting range specially designed for huntsmen. Tasmajdan stadium is under reconstruction, i think these can be held field hockey after reconstruction finishes and will have 10.500 seats: not very nice photo Belgrade has hippodrome, but i can't find a lot of informations and photos of it. Ada Ciganlija Here should be held: rowing, canoeing, triathlon, sailing (if it is possible on lake/river), beach volleyball, It has golf club... 2011 canoeing sprint EC Rowing world cup 2012 Sailing in Belgrade It's not stupid because it costs gazillions to host it. Plus, what will a small country do with dozens of huge stadia and athletic faciltiies? A large country has a large population to use these facilities. Improve sports and become more attractive for visiting
pcelica
Serbian city of Kraljevo improves canoeing slalom venue and has ambitions to host World Championship in future Stadiums: There isn't enough big athletics stadium so it must be built For Football FC Red Star Stadium - Maracana (55,538) - the largest stadium in Serbia Partizan Stadium (32, 710) Football federation announced planes to bid for 2020 European Championship, therefore they are going to build new stadium (50,000-55,000 seats) 8 locations are proposed, we still wait to see how it will look like Serbia doesn't have more stadiums bigger than 20,000 seats, but Football federation has more money then they need and they started to do reconstruction of stadium, 2 must be expanded for example: There is Omladinski stadium in Belgrade (10,000-20,000) seats who needs urgent reconstruction, i think that stadium could be great for rugby but after beeing reconstructed, now is not very representative This or next month, new stadium should be opened in Belgrade, FK Vozodovac Stadium on the roof of shopping center (5,200), it would be exotic for archery if we ever bid ofc Should look like this:
pcelica
To sum up, Belgrade would be great Olympic city and not because of sports only, there are many things to be seen, good atmosphere, food, night life and firstly because of people

Economy, but even that wouldn't be problem for bidding if we had better politicians (all are stupid, those in governament and those in opposition) Because Serbia is still one of the pariah's of Europe, has the 100th largest population, 76th largest economy and is not even in the top two dozen European countries. Top 2 dozen European countries, why you consider by it? Economics only or ?
FYI
Yes, and that's stupid, because only rich can host The Olympics are a luxury, not a charity event. then why doesn't Belgrade bid again? They did make the final 7 in 1986 (for 1992). Actually, only 6 bids came forward for 1992. And Belgrade just kept losing votes in the consecutive rounds, until finally eliminated in the third round & ending up with only 5 votes. They also bid for 1996 & were the first ones out (with 6 cities again) with only 7 votes.

FYI
For most of Africa, that is true. But not for South Africa. They're more than capable of hosting large, international sporting events like they showed us with the FIFA 2010 World Cup. And like China & Brazil, they're the last new (continental) frontier that the IOC would like to check off their hosting list. Compelling factors that Yugoslavia can't currently match. Well, i never said we will organize games, i wrote this thread is made to present my hopes of hosting games one day South Africa can and yes, world cup was great organized but somehow it is not humane to spend all those money on organization and when you pass border you see how other people in Africa live at least less money could be spend on opening/closing ceremonies and those money donate in areas where is needed
FYI
Was it 'humane' for China to spend $60B on their Olympics when there are tens of millions of Chinese living in poverty? Same with Brazil with the favelas. Why don't we let the people of South Africa decide what is good for them.

FYI
There are many aspects of life where inexpensive can still be great. But the irony of that is, that people hardly ever want to embrace the "less expensive". They always want to over-extend themselves & live beyond their means. With that said, it still remains to be seen if 'less expensive' Games is what the IOC is really looking for (even though they say that they do). But they have start showing it & instead of saying. The IOC has consistently picked the most expensive bids during the last decade. And I can't see them changing their tune anytime soon, especially when they have other bids coming to them willing to give them the princess parade that really do desire on the inside. Afterall, it's not their fricken money to begin with. So why not just blow it on a big a$s party!

FYI
That's just lack of ideas to make great inexpensive and fear of embracements cure with something gradiose. IOC did and does many bad decisions. It's a double edge sword, really. Bcuz a lot of times you have to take a look at the bigger picture. You also have to consider that it's mainly the bid cities, & not the IOC, that makes the bids grandiose. Let's take Sochi, for example. They didn't have to spend $40B on their Winer Olympics (the most expensive winter games to date). But then again, Sochi didn't have any venues to speak of, so they had to build them all, OTHO, you also had 'inexpensive' Salzburg on the table, too. I guess the IOC could've gone with that option, but then at the same time, doing that would ignore the aspect of Russia's premier record of a Winter sports nation that never hosted the Winter Olympics before. It also would've ignored the aspect of legacy. Whereas as soon as the 2014 Winter Olympics conclude, future Russian Winter Olympians (& others from nearby countries) will have their own winter facilities to train at. But let's look at Istanbul's 2020 proposal. Whlle their bid would be the most expensive out of the 2020 lot, they're the ones that would make the most compelling case. Turkey has never hosted, nor has a predominately Muslim country. Is truly an iconic setting that would make for a most picturesque Games. However, their proposal of the Bosphorus stadium (just for ceremonies) is truly just for indulgement, since there's really no need for it when the main Ataturk Olympic cluster could handle the ceremonies as well. The Bosphorus is just for show so they can showcase old Istanbul in the ceremonies, & if the IOC really wants to stop the costs of the Games from escalating, here's a perfect opportunity in them doing so by advising the Turks that the money to be used for this stadium that's not really needed to saved or be spent more wisely. Especially when the Bosphorus plan would also create great logisitical challenges for the organizers.

IOC chooses grandiose always Blah, they didn't spend that much money of venues, a lot of money is stolen during the building process, corruption At least venues will be useful in future, Russia needs to improve some sports, eg alpine skiing, ski jumping. Turks will do everything to get these games, i just hope that money won't be crucial in the end. You are right, this is chance for IOC, but i doubt they want to do anything also why is needed modern pentathlon stadium? that;s very very stupid Anyway, this thread is dedicated to Belgrade, IOC could open door to new region instead of Dubai and Qatar who have money, but with all those money they can never buy Olympic spirit
