/\/\ The usual suspects. Am surprised China didn't. I wonder when the Jamaican women will give it a try.

China is a surprise but they struggled this week. The Brazilian men gave it a shot last year to qualify lol

I made a mistake Germany did not qualify. South Korea did for the first time ever. Bodes well for 2018.

Aren't the world championships still going on? I thought the final isn't until this Sunday, although all but the top few places are set (which I'm guessing means the top 4 won't have an effect on Olympic qualification)

Well the top 4 who made it already have the qualification points to qualify. The other 3 that qualified have finished competing and thus the final qualification is also known.

Just a slight correction, a qualification tournament will qualify a further two teams next fall. Germany, Italy, China, Czech Republic, Latvia, Japan and Norway will all have a chance to participate.

You can assign points based on the round-robin/playoffs and give 8 points to the teams that are still in contention for the championship. The teams still in play are also the ones that scored well last time.

You have

Latvia: 1

Czech Republic: 1

Japan: 6

China: 6

Italy: 6

Germany: 8

Korea: 9

Denmark: 10

Russia: 11

Britain: min 15

USA: min 16

Canada: min 18

Sweden: min 20

Switzerland: min 22

Really pleasently surprised South Korea made it. They had a really nice run last year and its good to see that they will be at the Olympics getting some experience for 2014 (and realisticly, they have a shot at making the semies even in Sochi). Really surprized Germany missed out since they won the worlds all of two years ago.

Also nice to see Denmark making it considering Curling is pretty much the only Olympic winter sport in which they are competitive.

Hoping that Italy and Japan make it out of the last chance tournament.

I agree Germany is likely, but not so much China. Their team has been spiraling down quite heavily since Vancouver despite keeping the same rooster. I think loosing their coach really hurt them.

I actually think Japan is the most likely team to qualify allong with Germany.

Men's qualification is over.

Canada, Great Britain, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, China and Switzerland qualified by merit

Russia as host

USA, New Zealand, Czech Republic, France, Japan, Germany, Finland and Korea will play in the final qualification tournament.

Makes it between Germany, Japan or Czech Republic as the final qualification tournament host.

I just don't know what the hell the Scots are thinking. They have a perfectly good, solid, young Brewster team and than add in Murdoch and create team problems because of it. Scotland has won 1 Olympic medal in curling and it was not a super-team.

MEN’S CURLERS SELECTED TO REPRESENT TEAM GB AT SOCHI 2014

October 2, 2013 09:50 am

David Murdoch, who skipped his team (rink) to bronze at the World Championships in March this year will once again be joined by Tom Brewster, Greg Drummond, Scott Andrews and Michael Goodfellow, as they try to emulate such successes and more at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

Full athlete profiles can be found here

  • David Murdoch (skip)

Tom Brewster

Greg Drummond

Scott Andrews

Michael Goodfellow

Murdoch made his Olympic debut at the Turin 2006 Winter Olympic Games where he was not only the youngest member of the quartet, but also the skip. The team were edged out of a medal spot by the USA and finished fourth. Following this, Murdoch represented Team GB at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, where once again he skipped the team for his second consecutive Olympics. The men’s curling team placed fifth after losing their play-off match to Sweden. In 2013, skip Murdoch and the today selected rink won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Canada after finishing in 1st place during the round robin phase.

Tom Brewster was skip for the silver medal winning team at the 2011 and 2012 World Championships – where he was joined by current teammates Drummond, Andrews, Goodfellow - adding to the abundance of experience the Sochi 2014 Curling team will possess.

Olympic curling qualification event is going on in Germany this week. The men are through 3 of 7 draws. South Korea leads the standings at 3-0. Behind them is a 3-way tie for 2nd place between the Czech Republic, United States, and New Zealand. John Shuster is once again raising the blood pressure of American curling fans. He lost his first match 9-7 after coming home in the 10th down 1 with the hammer. Then today against New Zealand, he's down 6-4 after 7 ends then gets 1 in the 8th, and steals 1 in the 9th and 1 more in the 10th for the win.

The 3rd draw for the women is going on now.

USA and Germany qualified in the men's tournament and China and Japan in the women's. Therefore a total of 12 nations will have curling teams at the games, the same amount in Vancouver.

Let's face it, U.S. has zero chance of getting a medal in curling in Sochi. The lone medal for the U.S. curling team is the bronze won by the men in Turin in 2006.
