Heheh. Just got this text from my (Chilean) partner:

"Argentinian Pope, eh? The Argies are gonna get big heads now ... and the Chileans will get very shitty!!!"

:D A Peruvian friend of mine just said the same when I asked her whether she's proud that now there's the first South American Pope. The Argentinians seem to be truly popular among their fellow South Americans. ;)

The best of Brazilian jokes over the Argentine Pope:

"Take care, Brazilians, if you say **** about Argentina, all of you will go to Hell!"

"Since the Pope is now Argentine, the Brazilian Catholic Church is allowing you to convert yourself to any of these options:

Gospel, Pentecostal, Orthodox, Buddhist, Esotherical, Jewish, Muslim, Atheist, Vegan or Jedi"

-Hi!

"I knew it"

Finally, "yes, Christ is a bit Argentine today"

- Sir, we had agreed to choose a Brazilian Pope, right?

- So... The capital of Brazil is not Buenos Aires?

Italian bishops fete wrong pope

MILAN, Italy (AP) — Italian bishops were quick to congratulate the new pope. Too quick: They got the wrong man.

The Italian Bishops' Conference Wednesday sent a congratulatory email to one of their own, Milan Cardinal Scola — tipped as a hot conclave favorite. They quickly corrected themselves and issued a new message to the real winner, Argentine Jorge Bergoglio.

Conventional wisdom had it that a quick result — and this conclave was quick, with the white smoke coming on just the second day — could only mean consensus had built around a top name.

Churches in Milan also seem to have gotten it wrong: They sent bells pealing shortly before the announcement "Habemus Papam!" — "We have a pope!"

Once again, the old adage holds: Enter the conclave a pope, leave a cardinal.

He seems like a common man. He is fairly old, so it will be a short Papacy. I loved his speech.

And speaking of the Argentina-South America rivalry. This year's World Youth Day is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

I'm sure the Catholics of Brazil will welcome the Pope warmly. Not much as John Paul II, but I'm sure Pope Francis will have a nice time around here.

And now the allegations of involvment in the Dirty War.

It couldn't be helped. More than half of argentinans are very resentful of church because most of priests supported the witch hunt against commies and even helped during the infamous babies kidnaps. So it was bound to happen.

The Church was right then. No excuse for the commies & the lefties and pinkos. Communism is a failed ideology.

So you support the torture and murder of political opponents just because a regime was too paranoid and incapable of dealing with them in a more civilised and humane way? I certainly hope you don't really know what you are talking about - because if you did, that would be a very appalling mindset.

By the way: I don't support Communism either, not at all. But I'm also a fervent opponent of violence, especially in the political context. Communism, as history has proven, has mainly killed itself - so it was absolutely unnecessary to kill or torture Communists anyway.

And additionally: I'm a Social Democrat, so someone who you Americans might define as a "leftie" or even "pinko" (when quite many in your country label already your President as "socialist"). So I wonder whether you wish me death or torture as well? And with me, millions of Social Democrats around the world.

1. Well, that's 20-20 hindsight.

2. No, I don't wish you ill. U're just taking this thing too seriously. Stop being paranoid about it.

Of course he doesn't. Baron was trying to "do a funny".

Anyway, was it really beyond the Church to pick a candidate who doesn't have a murky past? Or does such a man not exist within the Conclave? As long as Pope Frankie stays out of our politics and doesn't get a taxpayer funded trip to our shores, then he's a step up from the last chap. I hope the faithful are happy anyway.
