Moscow 2013 may be a turning point for Isinbayeva
16.05.2013
6534-1.jpeg
The pole vault world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva told the media that she will make the decision about her future in sports after the home World Championships
Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva at the Shanghai Diamond League press-conference said she was keen to claim her third Olympic gold but may quit if she fails at this year's IAAF World Championships in Moscow.
Shanghai Diamond League will be Isinbayeva's first competition since London. She initially planned to compete indoors, starting from the home "Russian Winter" meeting, but made a last-minute decision to skip the entire winter. While Yelena was preparing for the outdoors she had to watch her indoor world record go after Jenn Suhr (USA) jumped 5.02 at home in the beginning of March. At the Diamond League meet the Russian will face Silke Spiegelburg (Germany) and the Russians Anastasiya Savchenko and Aleksandra Kiryashova.
Twice Olympic champion Isinbayeva, who won the bronze at last year's London Games, told reporters in Shanghai that "everything will depend" on her performance on home soil in August. "About my retirement, it is going to be a difficult decision, and you know it is difficult to say right now what I am going to do after Moscow 2013. It will depend on my performance there," she said.
"I still would like to have my third gold medal. If I would have done it in London, for sure I could stop after Moscow. But for the moment I don't know," Isinbayeva added.
Last week, the world record holder in the men's pole vault Sergei Bubka predicted that the outdoor world record-holder will end her career in Moscow, rather than push on to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Luzhniki arena gets ready for throws
17.05.2013
The replacement of an artificial pitch by a natural one has begun at the Big Sports Arena that will host the 1th IAAF World Championships in August
The President of the All-Russia Athletics Federation Valentin Balakhnichev in his interviews before the IAAF Council Meeting in Moscow mentioned that the Luzhniki Sports Complex was 90% ready to host the World Championships. The new Mondo track surface (the same as the one that was used at the London 2012 Olympics) had been installed, the jumping and throwing sectors had been renovated.
The only major thing that had to be done before the arena could host the major athletics event was the replacement of the football pitch. According to the IAAF requirements the throwing competitions can only be held on the natural grass pitch. On 10 May Luzhniki Big Sports arena hosted its last footbal game of the season, and the very next day the replacement process has begun.
The participants of the IAAF World Challenge meeting "Moscow Challenge 2013" will be the first athletes to test the renovated arena. The meeting will take place on 11 June. The competition programme includes 16 international events: men's 100 m, 400m, 800m, 110 mH, Pole Vault, High Jump, Triple Jump, women's 200 m, 400m, 1500m, 100mH, 10000m, Long Jump, Javelin Throw, Discus Throw and Hammer Throw; plus national men's 10000m race. The women's Hammer Throw at the "Moscow Challenge 2013" will be a part of the IAAF Hammer Throw Challenge. A number of top-level athletes from all around the world are expected to take part in the test event.

Moscow 2013 in figures: volunteers
24.05.2013
3.5 thousand volunteers from all over Russia will take part in the 14th IAAF World Championships
The Directorate for Sports and Entertainment Events of Moscow (DSZM) has already recieved 4118 applications for those who wish to volunteer during Moscow 2013 IAAF World Championships. There were 2472 applicants from Moscow and 1646 - from other regions.
There were also international applicants,. Unfortunately the LOC had to turn down some of those applications as the fluency in Russian is a prerequisite for work at Moscow 2013.
There will be 3 500 volunteers working at the event. "There are different categories of volunteers. For example, accreditation centres' staff, press-centre staff, doping-control chaperons, hospitality staff, sports volunteers that will work at the stadiums etc.", explained Aleksandr Buzdakov, the First Deputy Director General of the DSZM explained in an interview for R-Sport. "Despite the fact that we have more applications than volunteer positions, we still lack applications in certain categories: transportation staff, ingeneers, medical service volunteers", he added.
In the volunteer recruitment process the DSZM is assisted by the Sochi 2014 volunteer centre, "Synergy" University and the organistation "Students' Community".

Butov: "Moscow 2013 has already set a World Championships' record"
26.05.2013
The All-Russia Athletics Federation General Secretary and Moscow 2013 LOC Event Coordinator Mikhail Butov in his interview for "Sport-Express" talks about the advertising campaign, official event transportation, ticket sales and the record number of participants.
- Moscow recieved numerous IAAF site visits. The feedback was always positive. But during his last trip to Moscow the IAAF President Lamine Diack noted that there is way more TV-advertising for Sochi 2014 Olympics and Kazan 2013 Universiade than for Moscow 2013. Has anything changed since?
- We're operating according to our opportunities - financial ones, organisational ones etc. But of course we take into account the IAAF's remarks. As I know, the volume of TV-advertising of Moscow 2013 will be increasing on weekly basis.
- What is going in at the "Luzhniki" Big Sports Arena now? Has the pitch replacement already started?
- The track and jumping pits were ready as early as last year. Now the lane markings are being finished and some minor reparations are being made if necessary. As for the pitch replacement, it has just stared. It is "Luzhniki"'s responsibility and I hope they won't let us down.
- Will this process take a lonf time?
- The pitch will be ready by rugby-7 World Cup (28-30 June). The throwers will test it during the Russian Championships (22-25 July).
- Won't rugby players destroy the pitch?
- We anticipated the need for repairs, of course. "Luzhniki" assured us that everything would be fine. By 22 July the pitch will be ready. After that there will be only some maintenance works.
- Will the quality of the pitch be decent?
- Yes. It has been made in Russia by specialists of a very high qualification. We don't have any reasons not to trust them.
- Can you estimate the readiness of other services and departments of the LOC?
- It is at different levels. The competition part is 90% ready. The pitch is the last important part in these area. As for the logistics - we are ready. But we depend on partners in terms of the shipment of vehicles, they will arrive to Moscow in July. The IT, transportation schemes are sorted out and approved by the Government of Moscow and the IAAF.
- What kind of vehicles are you expecting from the partners?
- "Toyota" is the IAAF Official Partner. For the World Championships it will give us 202 cars and minivans. They will be marked by the official Moscow 2013 logo and will also serve as a part of the promotion on the city streets. In addition to this we are looking for an extra number of additional buses and minivans.
- Will the drivers of the official event vehicles undergo some special training?
- Of course. And they will wear the official uniforms. As I've already mentioned all the competition vehicles will have special marking and they will be able to use dedicated lanes.
- From time to time we see in the media some information on the amount of tickets sold. These numbers equal the stadium capacity, but only for a single day. How does the ticketing work?
- We have two ticketing agencies working for us - "Arena Market" and "Eventim". The latter is, by the way, Sochi 2014 official partner. If we consider the Russian trait to make last-moment decisions, the sales are going quite fine.
- Can we somehow speed up that decision-making process?
- Our main goal is to provide the potential spectators with the maximum amount of information. So that by August they will be certain that they want to come to Luzhniki. Plus we have a tourist agency that sells ticket packages with additional services. The same agency works with foreign spectators.
- Will any free tickets be distributed?
- They will be distributed among the young athletes, kids' coaches and the athletics federations from other regions of Russia. We've recieved around 5 000 applications.
- What about the costs of coming to Moscow for these guests?
- In some cases they will come at their own expense, in some cases - at the regions' expense. Our agency will help them find a cheap accomodation.
- The Luzhniki Big Sports Arena has 78 000 seats. But you offer to spectators only 50 000. Where will the rest of the seats go?
- We faced an objective need to decorade the first eight rows around the arena. Because if we install the advertising boards, the spectators won't be able to see anything from those seats. In addition to this we'll have the stage for the Opening Ceremony built in the stands. And we'll install a big screen (8x15 m) to make the competition closer to the spectators. And of course we'll have to remove some seats to install the TV-cameras.
- Will you be able to fill the stands during morning sessions?
- It won't be easy, but we'll do our best. We have cheap tickets for these sessions, probably we'll issue some free ones for kids. And we prepare an enterntainment program in Luzhniki area so that the families will come here for the whole day. The access to the Luzhniki sports complex territory will be free of charge.
- How much time will the accreditation process take?
- It depend. For the teams the preliminary accreditation is over. 207 out of 212 IAAF member countries have declared their intention to take part in Moscow 2013. It is the World Championships' record already! We contacted all the member federations in advance, explained to them all the details. And this work was effective as you can see. The final accreditation for the teams will be carried out in July, according to the rules. Media accreditation is already over. As for the IAAF Family, VIP-guests, Congress Delegates, it will end in June. The LOC will issue around 25 000 accreditations.
- Will the South and North Arenas and Sportgorodok be enough for the warm-up and training for all the teams?
- The teams that will live in "Cosmos" hotel will also use the "Spartak" stadium near Sokolniki metro station for training, as it is much closer. There will be shuttle buses provided to get the athletes from the hotels to all arenas.
- How will the medical service work?
- We pre-booked some beds in the main Moscow hospitals. We'll have many ambulance cars ready to serve the athletes and the spectators. It is especially important for the race walkinng and marathons that are held outside of the stadium. The main competition doctor will be Zurab Ordzhonikidze - the director of the Moscow Centre of Sports Medicine. We'll have many sports doctors working for us.
- Olympic villages always have some kind of chapels. Will you have some at Moscow 2013?
- We didn't recieve any requests. But anyway, Moscow is a multi-confessional city, so we'll be able to saisfy any requests.
- What about the hospitality program?
- It is extensive. Bus tours, special tours for media, VIP guests and IAAF Family. We want our guests to get acquainted with the whole city, not only with Luzhniki.

Moscow 2013 at SportAccord Convention
29.05.2013
The IAAF and Moscow 2013 LOC hosted a press-conference during the international sports convention in Saint-Petersburg.
The speakers were: the IAAF President Lamine Diack, the IAAF General Secretary Essar Gabriel, the ARAF President Valentin Balakhnichev, the Head of the Moscow Committee of Sports Aleksey Vorobyov, the Executive Director of the Moscow 2013 LOC Aleksandr Polinsky, twice World champion and Olympic champion in the 400 m hurdles Edwin Moses and Olymic champion and world record holder in the 20 km race walk Yelena Lashmanova.
Lamine Diack reflected on the level of the forthcoming World Championships: "No one really expected to see such outstanding results at the London 2012 Olympics. It is likely that in Moscow the results will be even higher".
Valentin Balakhnichev told the media about the future of athletics in Luzhniki Sports Complex and in Moscow: "In August Luzhniki will host the IAAF World Championships. After this event the arena will be closed for a prolonged renovation. At the moment the Big Sports Arena is the only venue in Moscow that can host big athletics events. I want to reassure you that after the renovation the arena will keep the track. We are also discussing a possibility of building a new athletics stadium with the city government".
Essar Gabriel stressed that the Moscow 2013 preparation process is going according to plan.
Yelena Lashmanova reflected on the last year's World Race Walking Cup: "In 2012 the World Race Walking Cup took place in my hometown Saransk. It was the first time when I competed in fron of such a huge home crowd and all my relatives, friends and fans were cheering for me. It helped me a lot to gain my first senior victory at a major international event. I hope that I can replicate that feat in Moscow and my compatriots will be proud of me".

LOC news

Transportation department is recruiting drivers; Accommodation department gets ready to welcome the Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt.
Moscow 2013 LOC started recruiting professional drivers for the official event's vehicles. The Head of the Transportation Department of the Directorate for Sports and Entertainment events of Moscow (DSZM) Yelena Shanaurova explains: "The Official IAAF Partner Toyota gives us 202 cars, and we are currently looking for drivers for these cars. The main requirements are: fluency in English and good knowledge of the streets of Moscow. There is no problem with the latter, but there aren't many drivers who can speak good English, unfortunately". Shanaurova noted that it was a common practice to use volunteers as drivers, but Moscow 2013 LOC opted for professional driverls instead due to the difficult road situation in the Russian capital. "We did the same during the UEFA Champions League Final in 2008 and decided to stick with that for the IAAF World Championships", said Shanaurova.
The Head of the Accommodation Department of DSZM Anna Polteva said that the Jamaican star Usain Bolt would be given a single room at the teams' hotel, if needed. Usually the athletes live in twin rooms, but for Bolt an exception could be made. "The IAAF advised us to make sure the Jamaican team would have the best conditions, as Usain Bolt is a member of the team. And if the team expresses a wish to get a single room for him, we can do that", explained Polteva.
Based on the preliminary entries the LOC has already made the distribution of the delegations among the four official team hotels. 204 national teams are expected to bring 1408 male and 1107 female athletes to Moscow this summer. "We did our best to take into account all the national delegations' preferences related to accommodation", Polteva reassured.

Bolt: "Moscow 2013 won't be boring"
13.06.2013
Usain Bolt visited the "Strawberry Party" in Oslo which was held in the Russian Embassy this year. In his interview to R-Sport the fastest man on the planet admitted he didn't know much about Moscow.
- Usain, you've never been to Russia, have you?
- Never. So Moscow 2013 World Championships will be my first acquaintance with Moscow.
- What do you expect from your first visit to Russia?
- It's hard to say. I don't know much about Moscow, about Russia and even about the stadium where we'll be competing. The only thing I know is that it will be the most important event of the season for all of us. We all are looking forward to it. The rivalry will be really exciting. No one will be bored for sure.
- How come you don't know anything about Russia?
- Oh well, it's hard, for real. Everyone is asking me this question and I don't know what to say. Oh, I've been told to say something about beautiful Russian women... But I mean everyone says that!
- Maybe you know anything about Russian sports?
- Of course, I know Russian track and field athletes. And Mariya Sharapova, I know her.
- Moscow 2013 will be the main competition of the season for you. Are you happy with how the season unfolds for you so far?
- Everything goes fine now. I'll be able to say if this year was successful for me only after Moscow. I had some injury problems, but now they don't bother me. I had several training sessions here, in Oslo. I feel great and I'm ready to get to my highest level. I'm planning to run faster and faster at every other meeting.
- At the press-conference you said that you're not upset with your loss in Rome.
- I'm not. We've analysed it with my coach. He isn't intimitaded, so I'm not either. I'm focused on the World Championships, on defending my title and winning the 100 m final.

She will also miss next weekends Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Supreme Ventures Limited National Senior Championships and, by extension, this summers IAAF World Championships in Athletics.

Ja's most decorated female athlete tests positive for banned substance

Andre Lowe, Senior Staff Reporter

The Gleaner can confirm that Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown returned a positive test at the May 4 Jamaica Invitational at the National Stadium.

The sprinter, who has won 16 medals for Jamaica at the Olympic and World Championships level, turned up a diuretic in her A sample and was advised of the adverse analytical finding on June 3.

Diuretics are masking agents banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency because of their ability to hide the presence of performance-enhancing drugs in the system.

confirmation yesterday

According to well-placed sources, Campbell-Brown, along with her management team, was in Montreal for the testing of the B sample on Thursday, with the confirmation of the positive result said to have come sometime yesterday.

Campbell-Browns sponsors have reportedly been informed of the situation and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), which reportedly oversaw the doping control procedures at the Jamaica Invitational, is said to be preparing an announcement.

The athlete has withdrawn from the Edmonton International Track Classic, which is scheduled for June 29 at Foote Field. She will also miss next weekends Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Supreme Ventures Limited National Senior Championships and, by extension, this summers IAAF World Championships in Athletics.

Campbell-Brown, the reigning 200m world champion, is Jamaica's most decorated female athlete and is only the second woman in history to win two consecutive Olympic 200m titles, after her victories at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games in Athens and Beijing, respectively.

The matter will now be passed over to the Jamaica Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel.

Efforts to contact VCBs management team since Thursday have proven futile.

Moscow 2013 audience can reach 7 billion
15.06.2013
The IAAF General Secretary Essar Gabriel estimates possible audience of the IAAF Word Championships in Russia and picks his favourite athletics event and favourite place in Moscow.
The writer of the "Sovetsky Sport" newspaper met Essar Gabriel during the break of yet another working group meeting at the Directorate of Sports and Entertainment Events of Moscow.
- What were the main topics of the discussion during the meeting?
- We are at the stage where we can already fit the pieces into a puzzle. Enormous amount of work has been accomplished during the last months. By the end of July we'll have the final number of people that will come to Moscow. And we'll see if it is consistent with our expectations in terms of accreditation, transportation and accommodation... We are at the point when planning turns into real actions. We've discussed the Luzhniki renovation that was done in compliance with the requirements of athletics and of such a big event as the World Championships. Let me remind you that in Moscow we'll see all the athletics events that were contested during London 2012. Media representatives will occupy a big part of the seats at the stands. TV is also important. We have more than 200 rights holders that will be broadcasting live from Luzhniki. Two years ago 5 billion of TV-spectators followed the action of Daegu 2011. This year this number can increase and reach 6-7 billion. The whole planet will be watching the performances of the best athletes. 4000 people will be working to provide the broadcast from Moscow. Our sport is not the easiest one for the TV. We can have up to 7 events going on simultaneously in different parts of the arena. We also discussed the attendance. I'd like to see dozens of thousands of Muscovites and city guests from all over the world enjoying tis festival of athletics.
- Is the cooperation between IAAF and the Governments of Russia and Moscow efficient?
- We are happy that the Government of Russia supports the event and that the Minister of Sports Vitaliy Mutko heads the LOC. We see that many organizations are involved in the preparation process, notably the Government of Moscow led by Sergey Sobyanin and the All-Russian Athletics Federation led by Valentin Balakhnichev.
- It's not your first time in Moscow. Can you feel here that the major sports festival is approaching?
- I see that sports fans are looking forward to the World Championships. And they should hurry up to buy the best tickets to see the magical running of Usain Bolt, jumps of Yelena Isinbayeva and Ivan Ukhov... Many fans will only be able to watch that on the TV, but the Muscovites can see it all live.
- From which countries do you expect fans to come to Moscow?
- Mainly from Europe and the USA. But you should bear in mind the location of Russia. It's easy to get here from Japan and China. These countries' citizens love travelling and love athletics. It is a distinctive feature of our sport that the medals are won by the athletes from about 40 countries. And they all have their own fans.
- What event are you looking forward to the most?
- I love the 400 m. It combines both speed and endurance.
- Do you have a favourite place in Moscow?
- Yes! It is the Bolshoi Theatre. I love ballet performances. But during Moscow 2013 I'll be enjoying the performances in Luzhniki.

Polinskiy: "Organising Moscow 2013 is challenging, but exciting"
16.06.2013
Moscow 2013 LOC Executive Director Aleksandr Polinskiy talks to R-Sport agency about the main sports event of the year in Russia that will be held in less than two months.
- On 10-11 June "Luzhniki" hosted the international meeting "Moscow Challenge" that played a role of the test event for Moscow 2013. What exactly was tested? Was the test successful?
- It wasn't the first test. Last year we also organised the "Moscow Challenge" with the World Championships in mind. The major part of the technical equipment isn't yet installed at the arena, the mounting will start in July. So the Russian Championships will be the dress rehearsal. At the "Moscow Challenge" our main aim was to test the judges' operations. And everything went well. As for transportation and accommodation, there was no point testing those, because only 200 athletes came to Moscow for the Challenge while during the World Championships there will be more than 2000. So we rely on our experience and understanding. We have everything planned out and we hope that the event will be held at the highest level.
- Do you like the newly installed pitch?
- I'm satisfied with it. The grass is growing green, striking roots. There are some spots that need replacement or reseeding, but we'll sort it out by the time of the Rugby World Cup.
- Will the pitch survive rugby matches?
- Well, they will trample it down a bit, but it's no big deal, we'll fix it. We are ready and we'll have almost one month for the maintenance. And for athletics the pitch isn't supposed to have the ideal quality, because the athletes don't actually run on grass. But it is supposed to look green and flawless. And we can do that.
- Many "Moscow Challenge" participants said that the arena was great, the track was good, but there weren't enough spectators. They are hoping to see full stands during the World Championships. How are the ticket sales going? Are you satisfied with the figures so far?
- The sales aren't brilliant, but they are ok. And, in my opinion, it's too early to give estimates. There are still 2 months to go. We will be able to talk about the situation with attendance in the end of July. Russian sports fans aren't used to buying tickets in advance. They think that there won't be any deficit and they will be able to buy the tickets on the day of the competition.
- What about foreign spectators? Are they buying tickets?
- Of course! They are actively booking tickets online.
- Do you check on the weather forecast?
- Yes, we've already started receiving information from the Hydrometeorological Centre. But you must understand that talking about weather forecast with two months to go is somewhat pointless. More or less precise predictions will be available one week before. Anyway, we're not planning to try and influence the weather situation as the event lasts for nine days, it is a long period. When we chose the dates for Moscow 2013 we took the weather stats into account,. According to the indicators these days are the least rainy in August.
- Are the hotels ready to welcome the teams?
- Yes. Everything is agreed upon with the IAAF. We'll be using nine hotels, four - for the teams. We already have the distribution of the teams among the hotels.
- Did the teams have any preferences?
- Last year team leaders came to Moscow, we showed them all the hotels and they expressed their wishes. Some teams picked the hotels right away. Those who didn't do that will be accommodated in the "Cosmos" hotel, as "Crowne Plaza", "Raddisson Slavyanskaya" and "Golden Ring" are already booked.
- I know that there will be about 400 official vehicles that will be allowed to use the dedicated lanes. But it happens that careless drivers create jams at the dedicated lanes as well. Do you plan to use escort for any special cases?
- Russian laws don't provide for any escort use. And I don't see the need for it. All the team hotels except for the "Cosmos" are located near "Luzhniki", the event will be held in August when the traffic is less heavy. But if we have some special necessity we can count on a co-operation of the road police.
- You've organised a number of major sports events in Moscow. Is the IAAF World Championships the most complicated?
- Yes. It is the most challenging one. And the most exciting one. I haven't and no one has organised such a major event in our country since Moscow 1980 Olympics. The IAAF World Championships is in the top-5 sports events worldwide. That's the answer for your question. Organising such an event is difficult, interesting and it is a huge responsibility. I hope that we will succeed.

Um... An audience of 7 billion? Everyone on the planet? What?

It would seem that way...but that's # of hits. So if like, I watched every day for only 15 mins each day. They would count me as 7 viewers.

And then they probably multiply each household 2.5; so that's how they got the "7 billion" but even that seems highly inflated. I'm wondering if u are channel-surfing and u just go by that channel for a split-second, if they count that as 1 legit hit?

So is Felicien retired? I know that Priscilla Lopes Schliep is out due to pregnancy.
