ofan
At one time I would have been jealous of the Canadian coverage, especially Nagano since CBS was simply horrendous. Now most my viewing is online, I watch what I want when I want and it doesn't get any better than that. Good point.
Durban Sandshark
MTG's TV3's and TV10's Sochi 2014 OS promo with (in order of appearance) Ola Westeberg, Per Elofsson, Carolina Kluft, Helena Ekholm, Anja Pärson, and Anette Norberg. Great looking! Seems to me this will be the intro for both Swedish channels for Sochi telecast. And why not? Thinking it's Goran Zachrisson doing the voiceover. http://www.tv10.se/os/os-p%C3%A5-tv3-tv10-se-filmen I'd be jealous too to some extent but online coverage has tempered that. But I'd still be curious and jealous for the fact that I would like to get access to some very strong Canadian coverage in both languages if not multilingual, and I can flip back and forth when possible and would show everything on TV--and have it live. ofan
So based on that article Durban posted, Russian tv is showing just 3 hours a day from Sochi of their home Olympics???
Durban Sandshark
No, just Russia 1. Russia 2 is already designated as "The Olympic Channel" at least from the RTR/VGTRK realm with at least 14 hours a day since November. Channel One (Perviy Kanal) will show plenty of coverage themselves. As will NTV+ on pay-TV. No need for Russia 1 to go comprehensive when Russia 2 will do the trick. More details are sure to follow. Ditto. My jealously now isn't so much in the style or the quantity of coverage, but more how it's delivered. In the United States, you have to be an authenticated cable subscriber to watch events live and then they're largely embargoed until after primetime. In Canada, you just have to be Canadian and you can get pretty much any event at any time. If NBCU/Comcast could bridge that gap, that would help a great deal. Barcelona_'92
Here's something we missed--it appears that the Tonight Show will not be going on hiatus for the entire Olympics. Jay Leno's last show is February 6th, and the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon will debut on Monday, February 17th: http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/12/the-tonight-show-starring-jimmy-fallon-logo-arrives-best-of-late-night-announced.html Obviously, NBC wants to use the Olympics to launch Jimmy Fallon as the new host. This should push the late night coverage back an hour as it did in 2002 and 2006 when Leno aired during the Olympics. I just hope NBC won't be taking time away from primetime to launch new shows again this year.

I saw that Fallon was starting on the Tonight Show on the 17th and knew that was during the Olympics but didn't even consider the implications on NBC's coverage. I'll be interested to see what that looks like, especially if this pushes NBC's late night coverage back an hour like CBS did for Letterman. I guess at least this beats having NBC debuting some shoddy sitcom the night of the Closing Ceremony. 1 thing to note.. when NBC showed Leno in 2002 and 2006, that was really branded as "The Olympic Tonight Show," so I don't know if they'll brand this as part of NBC's Olympic late night coverage or whether it will be a completely separate entity. I'm guessing the latter.

Though NBC is debuting some of their mid-season shows in January, so I'm not sure what they'd debut during the Olympics. The shows they debuted in 2010 and 2013 ended up flopping, so hopefully NBC learned their lesson on debuting shows during the Games. I hope primetime doesn't get shortchanged an additional half-hour to make sure that Fallon can air at 11:35pm Eastern.

This isn't like the CBS days when Letterman had the power to dictate the schedule and could force CBS off the air at 11pm ET. I doubt they'll give Fallon that kind of latitude. breathesgelatin
Well, if they must do it, at least it will be Fallon and not Leno. Leno is the WORST.
Durban Sandshark
Almost forgot that Jimmy Fallon is going to come in and take the Tonight Show with him back to New York during NBC's Sochi coverage with its implications--and the February sweeps. I agree Leno is past his time as host and might as well allow Fallon be protected during this. But, as Quaker2001 says, I don't think NBC will give him the latitude like CBS did with David Letterman during Lillehammer and Nagano; only time sports truly interrupted him and allowed I can instantly recall right now was during NCAA Basketball March Madness. But even that now is fragmented but shared between CBS and Turner Sports (TNT, TBS, and Tru TV) with full games on all of them from the second round to the Sweet 16. Besides, Fallon is not Letterman in several ways and likely won't even mind the Olympics. And NBC has to know primetime is their Olympic bread and butter to casual and hardcore American Olympic fans alike. So it would be foolish to me for NBC to shortchange that segment from a half hour. Still makes me wonder will Fallon go forth on an Olympic theme for Sochi and perhaps bring in guests with Olympic connections onto the show? Makes sense that way. Also, no new shows. Olympic fans aren't neccesarily going to be fans of new shows placed on the NBC schedule. Want to premiere new shows on January? Knock yourself out, NBC. Best to leave the Olympic coverage alone without any entertainment interruptions. Hope NBC learns from that. Even with FOXTEL not being involved in this Olympics down in Australia, the coverage is still very huge by Australian Winter Olympic broadcasting standards with 550 hours on Ten and ONE. Just think, it was around a decade ago that when 7 had both Salt Lake City and Torino, its coverage was up to 99 hours each overall--TVNZ had just a bit more into the century mark. TVE confirms at the end of now last year that Teledeporte and La 1 will each have its own HD channels. So that's confirmation right there the Sochi Winter Olympics will appear on Teledeporte in Spain. http://www.adslzone.tv/2013/12/31/tve-confirma-la-creacion-de-la-1-hd-y-teledeporte-hd/ UnoTV has a contest for one lucky girl to appear in a series of promos for its Sochi 2014 online coverage. But one of the conditions is that she must speak both spanish and Russian. Resumes are pouring in. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://sp.ria.ru/sochi2014/20131224/158857955.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://sp.ria.ru/sochi2014/20131224/158857955.html%26biw%3D1440%26bih%3D783%26tbm%3Dnws
BTHarner
Have any of those shows NBC promoted during past Olympics had any success. I remember some of them by name--Dark Skies, Deadline, LAX, Tucker, Joey, Titans, etc. I never bothered to watch any of them and couldn't tell you if they are still on or how long they lasted. Durban Sandshark
None of them did last. Though I think Dark Skies came the closest followed by Deadline and LAX (because of Heather Locklear and Blair Underwood) to the best of my recollections. Never bothered to watched them too, BTH. Don't watch much TV these days.

Needless to say, NBC doesn't have a great track record of late with new shows, Olympic promotion or otherwise Yeah, forgot about Parenthood. Still on the air today. First known Dentsu selling of the Sochi 2014 Olympic rights in Central, West, and Southeast Asia comes from Kazakhstan. It is confimed from mid-December that Khabar TV will cover Sochi like it did with Vancouver (partnered by El Arna), and, as previously reported by Vesti, KazSport will broadcast Sochi 2014 in full (both ceremonies, cross country skiing, biathlon, figure skating, and decisive key hockey matches, and ski jumping) more round the clock with an emphasis on the Kazak Olympians and could share the broadcast--but the former is still negotiating. KazSport's Sochi TV schedule is still being finalized when it's not quite clear what events will be indicated live, and there will be six people in three groups, each with an operator and journalist ready to cover the Kazak athletes, going to Sochi from Astana for KazSport. Plans are also afoot to expand the number of IOC domestic quotas for Kazak journalists to 4 at the IBC. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=http://vesti.kz/winter_olympic_games/182771/%3Fr%3Dtrue&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://vesti.kz/winter_olympic_games/182771/%253Fr%253Dtrue%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D907 http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://vesti.kz/winter_olympic_games/182771/%253Fr%253Dtrue%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D907&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=ru&u=http://vesti.kz/sport_progress/181728/&usg=ALkJrhjUvJXDCXB9gJSF935DPMXNrEVatw How ARD Radio will cover Sochi 2014 on the radio front in Germany with a 14-person IT crew--and will tackle the political issues in Russia as well http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.radiowoche.de/meldungen/1/13316/fruehsport-olympische-winterspiele-2014-in-den-ard-radios/&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://www.radiowoche.de/meldungen/1/13316/fruehsport-olympische-winterspiele-2014-in-den-ard-radios/%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D907%26tbm%3Dnws Sochi 2014 apps coming ahead in all of its diversity! http://appadvice.com/appnn/2014/01/the-app-store-begins-prepping-for-the-2014-winter-olympic-games-in-sochi-russia Network Ten created Sochi on Ten's YouTube channel with a series of ever-growing news reports and promos with one of the premier faces on Ten's Sochi coverage, Australia's first Winter Olympic gold medalist Steven Bradbury, being all over and happily promoting Australia's greatest and deepest Winter Olympic team yet! Quaker2001
Looks like we have full TV listings, and I'm told we should have announcer confirmations tomorrow.. http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv A few notes.. NBC's late night show is indeed going to 1am for the second week of the Olympics to follow Jimmy Fallon at Midnight. Weekend coverage is as we expected, cut back from Vancouver and a lot of it includes event re-airs from stuff that was on NBCSN earlier in the day. Seems like a lot of the extra NBCSN hours we couldn't account for are them extending coverage (mostly encore coverage of hockey games) past 3pm ET. And the big bummer.. far less live curling coverage than we got from Vancouver, including a bunch of US games that won't be covered live. Definitely not happy about that one. Barcelona_'92
Overall, there are a lot of events that will be airing on NBCSN and then again on NBC. This is not really how I'd like to see NBCSN used. Most of the additional hours from Vancouver are coming in repeated events.

Barcelona_'92
With Lindsey Conn now out of the Games, I wonder how long it will be before NBC announces her as a contributor to its coverage. This could be a pretty big blow to NBC's ratings, especially if the rest of the U.S. alpine team underperformed, as they have for the most part on the World Cup this season. This could be a pretty big blow to NBC's ratings, especially if the rest of the U.S. alpine team underperformed, as they have for the most part on the World Cup this season. First off, corrected that typo for you there I don't know that Vonn will want to do that. Does she really want to be working at an Olympics she would otherwise be competing in? Obviously NBC would like to have her in the mix, but she may not be interested
