Sochi 2014 Olympic Media Updates

SporTV's theme music for its coverage of Sochi 2014. Reminds me a bit of what the CBC does with its famous theme when it incorporates the host nation's folk music into its overall theme. SporTV fuses traditional Russian folk music with guitars and a drum machine

One of at least 8 TRT3 Spor's Sochi 2014 promos set to orchestral music with only the conductor's back shown interspersed with a Winter Olympic sport. In this case, men's aerials freestyle skiing.

Um, Switzerland's RTS 2 surely didn't emulate what the top Russian Olympic rights TV broadcasters did as far as the Olympic rings technical malfunction was concerned...

RTS' press kit on the general overview of not just Sochi 2014 in its coverage on TV, radio, and on the web/mobile and the Paralympics but also briefly into the UEFA Champions League and Europa League:

Those living in the northern and more German part of Italy like in the South Tyrol region and did not have access to SKY Sport Italia and thinking RAI was still doing it were surprised it was only doing highlights and NO LIVE COVERAGE. It's likely a good number of Italians never knew about this current deal that SKY Italia struck with the IOC in this cycle and were thus still thinking of the "civil law" charge the Olympics fall under; the public broadcaster was outbid/cashstrapped and won't cover the Olympic for the first time. Outside of SKY Sport Italia and Cielo, residents in that region had options to follow the Azzurri Olympians through the vast RAS German channels and RAI Sudtirol (formerly Sender Bozen) with support from Raiffeisen Online.

Still need to correct that RTS 2 Opening Ceremony video that surely didn't emulate what the Russian channels did...(Now we got it! :) )

The opening moments of SKY Italia Olimpiadi 3's (SKY 208, temporarily replacing Sky Calcio) broadcasting of Sochi 2014 complete with sponsors and intros that preceeded the live Opening Ceremony broadcast

Nice emotional post-Bronze Medal game backstage interviews on YLE TV2 with Kimmo Timonen, Sami Salo, Olli Jokinen and Olympic tournament MVP Teemu Selänne by Kaj Kunnas in their great way for them to bow out of international hockey and reflecting on their careers after what they accomplished up to then. Kunnas says to Teemu that he was crying while Selanne maintains his composure. All thank the Finnish fans for their incredible support over the years and ends with a Teemu Selanne Olympic montage.

Just Teemu here with Kunnas and the montage afterwards but comes with English subtitles.

Teemu's 1-minute post-bronze medal game interview with Viasat that was conducted entirely in English, which is interesting because this is shown on Sweden's TV10 (note the logo) as well as on those Viasat-OS channels like Viasat Sport and Viasat Hockey and is another part of the Modern Times Group. Surely as a Finn, Selanne can speak some Swedish since Finland requires taking up of Swedish in schools and the nation does have a Swedish minority. On the other hand, many Swedes, if not all, do speak and understand English as it's a very popular language spoken there.

The London Free Press printed out a special Canadian-centric London 2012 preview. Now, belatedly, this is the LFP's Sochi 2014 version, also in digital and virtual form. Wonder if other Canadian newspapers did likewise:

This is Iouri "I-Pod" Podladtchikov's interview with Switzerland's SRF Sport that was on SF 2 moments after winning the halfpipe gold in Sochi with Olivier Borer and Gian Simmen. Still in awe of what he obviously accomplished.

Ending September with this: We now have the Sochi 2014 media reports downloadable thanks to the IOC.

7-page report indicating the rapidly-increasing broadcasting and consumption of digital Olympic video in channels, hours, audience, and views. But TV still reigns supreme in the global coverage audience summary. Thought it was going to be more pages than this:

http://www.olympic.org/Documents/IOC_Marketing/Sochi_2014/sochi-2014-global-coverage-audience-summary-vaug14.pdf

From pages 24-37, the marketing report reviews the broadcasting coverage in the major Olympic markets in various regions, happily reporting the channel, viewer, and coverage of hours increases along with the increase of Olympic viewing consumption from the broadcast rights holders and the events in those nations where the viewership was highest

http://www.olympic.org/Documents/IOC_Marketing/Sochi_2014/LR_MktReport2014_all_Spreads.pdf

It was in the latter that I discovered somethings regarding the Sub-Saharan African Olympic coverage. To start off with, SuperSport aired from its three received official IOC feeds 113 hours across that region, mostly on SS3 and SS3HD. Plus, free-to-air Sub-Saharan African channels were granted a total of 405 hours of Sochi coverage. What channels had that since winter sports aren't going to be big there? We did know that SABC2 showed some Sochi Olympic stuff, but it was the ceremonies and daily highlights, not wall-to-wall and overarching like in the summer version. No Vancouver coverage at all on the FTA side four years in comparison while SuperSport was restricted to daily highlights. And there actually was some French language Sub-Saharan pay-TV Sochi coverage that was on TV5 Monde Africa. Coverage came at 70 hours, a huge increase from a mere 13 hours in Vancouver four years ago. Like to see if TV5 Monde Africa had London coverage and be curious with Rio. It's a little weird because the official Olympic broadcasting list makes absolutely no mention of the FTA broadcasters (except for Mauritania's TVM, South Sudan's SSTV, and Tunisia's Tunisia 1--not even SABC2 got a mention on the list!) and pay-TV/cable save for SuperSport and GEM Sports. I'll look into GEM Sports later.

TV5 Monde Afrca's Sochi 2014 broadcasting guide for the French-speaking African nations, mostly in West and Central Africa:

http://www.tv5monde.com/cms/chaine-francophone/programmes/p-27448-TV5MONDE-Afrique-diffuse-les-Jeux-Olympiques-de-Sotchi-2014.htm

Would like to see the current generation of Olympic Broadcast reports reincorporate the metered amount of hours and broadcasters each did--can't even find the older ones like Nagano there anymore.

The Sochi reports also mentions the uses of cameras and hours of coverage.

For those who missed it much earlier on this thread, this is the group of sportscasters, studio hosts, reporters, and analysts for Sweden's Viasat OS 2014 Sotji coverage:
http://www.expressen.se/sport/vintersport/har-ar-hela-viasats-stjarnfyllda-os-trupp/

A source says SRG, the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation that covered the Olympics in German, French, and Italian, says its costs roughly SF12-15,000 per person out of the 350-person SRG peronnel in handling the broadcasting of 17 hours a daily of Sochi 2014 on SF 2, RTSI 2, and RTS 2. That's about 3.5 million Swiss francs with 235 people of them actually in Sochi. SRG sent much less people to Brazil for the World Cup. Plus, the bigger events get the bigger production and complex values for Swiss broadcasting that may not satisfy everyone in Switzerland.
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.blick.ch/news/schweiz/3-5-millionen-franken-so-viel-kostet-der-srf-olympia-wahn-id2624732.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dschweizer%2Bfernsehen%2Bsotschi%2B2014%26start%3D30%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D923

SRF's German-language sportscasting crew select their personal highlights, many of them involving Nati, from Sochi 2014:

South Korea's SBS' opening intro to its Sochi 2014 coverage. Everything's all snow and ice. Even the various winter athletes who change into different types from blocks of flying ice crystals.

Yeah, Korean TV dramas, a staple particularly on KBS2, SBS, and MBC, were largely sidelined during Sochi 2014:
http://beatuscorner.com/tv-schedule-changes-during-2014-sochi-winter-olympics/

Like many who live in the Asia/Pacific region, many South Koreans were more than eager to stay up late and gather around with family, friends, and strangers to cheer on the likes of Lee Sang-Hwa, the South Korean women's curling team, Kim Yu-Na, Mo Tae-Bum, and Lee Kyu-Hyuk do their respective things in Sochi be it live on SBS, KB2, and MBC, as opposed to watching during the morning-afternoon hours like with Vancouver four years ago:
http://english.donga.com/srv/service.php3?biid=2014021331488

It was said earlier on this thread that KBS broadcasted Sochi 2014 on two of its channels, both running on 12 a day. But conflicting that is it was only KBS2 that aired the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics out of the KBS channels and, according to Wikipedia's KBS2 entry, the Olympics were running for 24 hours a day. Its coverage actually started at 12:30am Thursday night for the live Thursday, Feburary 7 competitions--snowboarding, team figure skating short program, and the freestyle skiing. But on another website, it indicated that KBS Star was also involved. Maybe it was referring to KBS Sports N, which surely aired some of Sochi 2014. Likely it was referring to those two KBS channels, KBS2 and KBS Sports N.

Very revealing and interesting documentary aired on VGTRK's Russia channels in the leadup to Sochi 2014. This deals with the days in the lives of the unsung heroes of Sochi--the planners, builders, doctors, engineers, designers, steel workers, ice makers, volunteers, managers, machinists, restaurant workers, and border guards in all discussing how making real their Olympics. Plus, there are interviews with Vladimir Putin throughout this during his stay there testing the facilities. Wonder how they feel now because I now heard it's the Winter equivalent to Montreal. I'm wondering was this aired immediately before Rossiya 1 and Rossiya 2 went on to the coverage on February 7 or prior to the Opening Ceremony. It's called the Soft Philosophic Way.

Looking at the legacy of Sochi 2014's broadcasting and technology at least six months later on how Russian TV and online outlets like ANO Sports Broadcasting learned will cover future events:

All Olympic TV commercial breaks are good TV commercial breaks during Sochi 2014, so says TV2 Norge. Despite public backlash like creating a Facebook page against that after it took the Norwegian Olympic rights away from NRK, whom many Norwegians surely wish it would return:
http://www.dagsavisen.no/nyemeninger/alle_meninger/cat1000/subcat1028/thread296318/#post_296318

TV2 planned for up to no more that 12 minutes per hour for commercial breaks during its Sochi 2014 coverage with shorter ones as the events mandated lasting for 30 seconds--and all were timed during the coverage, it says:

http://www.itromso.no/100Sport/mesterskap/article417301.snd

A Novus Sweden poll reveals during Sochi that 72 percent of Swedes would much rather have the Olympic Games back on SVT instead of the Modern Times Group/Viasat. SVT, hopefully, would some lessons about how the Viasat channels, TV3, and TV10 handles the Sochi-Rio De Janeiro coverage when and if the Swedish public broadcaster reclaims them:

http://www.webbsporten.se/notiser/sport-pa-tv.htm

A look at the Viasat OS 2014 android. Expect something similiar and with cloud technology incorporated come Rio De Janeiro

15 million Canadians saw the men's hockey gold medal game between Canada and Sweden on the CBC, TSN, TSN2, Rogers Sportsnet, Sportsnet 360, Radio-Canada Television, and TVA Sports, down a million from Vancouver but around 33 million Canadians saw some share of Sochi 2014. 625,000 saw Canada's semi against the USA online and mobile devices Peaked at 5.764 million overnight when it started as reported in the next report:

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/olympics/more-than-15-million-canadians-watched-gold-medal-hockey-win-over-sweden/article17076958/

CBC's Sochi 2014 TV ratings are indeed down from Vancouver's, which can be attributed to the time differences and no home field advantage this time. But some Canadians were flocking to the digital media for watching the coverage, which obviously soared in viewers during this time with not just smartphones but also the advent of tablets since Vancouver. Even CC live ratings was down from Vancouver but got more during the CBC/Radio-Canada Television primetime encore:

http://www.thestar.com/sports/sochi2014/2014/02/25/sochi_olympics_tv_ratings_down_compared_to_2010_in_vancouver_digital_viewing_soars.html

Still the Sochi 2014 ratings were big on the last day. 12 million saw it in the dying seconds at its peak. Not as dramatic as Vancouver's Crosby shot but still very good:

From pages 68-108, Sports Tech Media does a special report on the global coverage of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in its Spring 2014 issue. Starts off with how the OBS did things, then NHK with its ambitious 8K efforts on its figure skating coverage, NBC of course, and then hosts ANO Panorama Russia (in association with Channel One, VGTRK, and NTV Plus) gets some pages before devoting blurbs more to Europe, Asia, Latin America, and finally North America/Australia with their tech/coverage overviews. You certainly get lots of insight into how these productions teams execute, especially in the tech realm:

You just had to expect this was going to happen during the US coverage with what was going on with Russia and at its borders and Putin's need to be a world power player:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sochi-russian-officials-blast-western-678183

I agree. I think a lot of us expected to see something like that. During the Olympics. In February. 9 months ago. It's November now.

Any particular reason you're sharing this with us long after the fact? I don't know that this necessarily falls under the category of "US coverage" but this is something that probably got discussed here when it happened. Not your most timely post there, Durban

Got a series of SBS South Korean Sochi 2014 promos that I got via SBS Sports' Facebook page to belatedly show you:

At the 90-mark late last year, SBS premiered its latest Olympic promo centering on short track sped skater Shim Suk-Lee discussing her thoughts on the Olympics interspersed with her training, practicing, and competing in preparation for Sochi:

https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=571110942969787&set=vb.212803772079678&type=2&theater

A montage of the thrill of victory in Vancouver and then onto South Korea's sole Sochi 2014 male moguls skiier Choi-Jae Woo:

https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=572606116153603&set=vb.212803772079678&type=2&theater

Meet the South Korean 4-man bobsled team-- ready back then to take on Sochi. Actually South Korea two teams to Sochi. But I can't who is this group specifically when speaking. Corect me if I'm wrong, but I think here it's Jun Jung-lin, Seo Young-woo,
Suk Young-jin, and driver Won Yun-jong

https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=578170105597204&set=vb.212803772079678&type=2&theater

The South Korean Olympic women's curling team--Kim Ji-sun, Lee Seul-bee, Shin Mi-sung, Gim Un-chi, and Um Min-ji

https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=779136562113060&set=vb.212803772079678&type=2&theater

In the leadup to Sochi 2014 for SBS, its cover photo from February 2-23 has a group of South Korean short track speed skaters kneeling in front of the South Korean flag.

KBS' broadcast of Sochi 2014 started February 7 and onto the 23rd. On 2/10, 2/11, 2/15, 2/18, 2/20, 2/21, KBS Olympic viewers displayed musical cheering messages that they can win meals following a 60-minute lottery.

Apparently, Joannie Rochette was involved in the Sochi women's figure skating competition analysis for MBC from South Korea

MBC's Facebook Sochi 2014 cover photos had a trio of those MBC mascots emulating the short track comp and later there was a Kim Yu-Na photo

Turns out the TV2 Norge 12-minute commercial break self-restrictions during Sochi 2014 wasn't entirely fufilled--sparked most notably with the Steven Van Zandt-starring Lilyhammer frequent TV promos, its most extensive, interrupting some of the action. Angering many Norwegian TV viewers. Unless the Norwegian Olympic TV rights revert to NRK, viewers will have to resign itself to the realities of commercial TV broadcasting in some form or another, including errors:

http://www.newsinenglish.no/2014/02/10/tv-commercials-anger-ol-viewers/

Another collection of TV2 Norge Sochi 2014 promos, more like bumpers, with no dialouge and its analysts or models wearing next to nothing, almost keeping in tradition with the ancient Olympics, performing in their former sports through the ice and snow. Produced by Storm Studios in Oslo:

OL 2014 website now surpassed for TV2 Norge in "all time high" of record page views on TV2's website with 134 million this November set from February:

Kinda odd that Channel One won some awards for its coverage of Sochi 2014, its promo, and its "The First Olympics" (a jury prize) over the apparently more comprehensive VGTRK/RTR's Russia 1, Russia 2, and Sport 1 channels. Nonetheless, surely Perviy Kanal is proud of what it accomplished with its Sochi 2014 project that also involved its news department being there with 75% increase in viewership:

http://www.ng.ru/tv/2014-12-30/15_olimpics.html

Panorama won two IOC Awards for "Best Digital Application" for its RussiaSport to the 780 hours online in total of the 377 broadcasts there and for the 5000 clips from Sochi 2014 and "Best Olympic Programming" for its "emotional" video on Adelina Sotnikova's controversial ladies' figure skating gold medal win:

Been going through the Wikipedia entry of 2014 Winter Olympic broadcasters. I noticed there's no separate listing for the radio Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics broadcasters on there like there was for Beijing 2008 broadcasters list (though in London's and Sochi's cases, both the radio and TV broadcasters were combined). Now I have brought forth several of them but many of them like Westwood One here in the USA, CBC in Canada, Russia's Vesti-FM, the BBC, Sweden's Radio Sporten, Cesky Rozhlas from the Czech Republic, and Radio MonteCarlo in France. Hopefully in the new week we can take a better look at their Sochi 2014 coverage. Though we already did with the first two that included the since-disgraced Jian Ghomeshi and the CBC's Q. And see if we take a look at others that weren't mentioned here already.

Essentially the only place in the 2014 Australian TV ratings where Network Ten's Sochi 2014 coverage managed to appear in was in the Top 20 Free-to-Air Digital Multichannel annual year-end category, based on the 5 largest Australian cities and state capitals viewership. Surely it wasn't going to amass more than Ten's ONE Glasgow LIVE with the Winter Olympics having more marginal Australian interest. Five of Ten ONE's Sochi 2014 programming blocks making it into the Top 20. Highest among them is Sochi Live Day 2 Afternoon at #6 and Sochi Live Day 2 Early Evening at #7 behind all those Glasgow Live evening blocks, generating respectively in total 492,000 and 490,000 Australian viewers. All released by OzTAM last week:
