SporTV showing the sights, sounds, and emotions of the Winter Olympics in one of its promo

Swedes everywhere are reacting to how Sweden is doing in Sochi wherever they are--work, travel, relaxing, school--by watching the Winter Olympics on Viaplay. In this case, when Tre Kronor plays hockey.

True that SABC2 is just showing daily highlights of Sochi 2014 for two hours at 11pm (23:00) there. Even when I checked for February 23, SABC listed for Sochi just highlights and not the full Closing Ceremony, as of right now. That could change though. As for the more comprehensive pay-TV SuperSport, SS HD6 actually has been showing some select hockey and curling matches for the past few days, both men's and women's, and will continue to do so along with the other Winter Olympic sports both live and recorded and, increasingly, SS HD5 does broadcast a couple of live events that couldn't be shown on SuperSport HD6 due to overlapping. Maybe another SuperSport channel wouldn't hurt for Pyongchang. Internet streaming will suffice. You can also, belatedly, visit SuperSport's Winter Olympics webpages

Astro's back for Malaysian Olympic coverage having bought it from Dentsu! With four dedicated Winter Olympic channels--two in HD (840 & 841) and two in SD (820 & 821)--as well as on Astro On-The-Go.

Singaporeans seeking for a more comprehensive Sochi 2014 coverage won't have to settle for Mediacorp's Channel 5's measley daily highlights coming in 3 times at 2 hours each. SingTel mio TV had come to the rescue with 7 unprecedented 24-hour HD channels of live and delayed coverage including an Olympic news channel (channels mio Olympics 134-140)

Televisionet's report on the Sky Sport Italia and Cielo Sochi 2014 Olympic coverage unvieling:

Following is a list of Olympic broadcasters who started their TV programming that we know of on February 6 (if at Pacific end, February 7) instead of with Opening Ceremony:

NBC

CBC/Radio-Canada

TV3/Viasat Sweden

TV2 Norge

ORF (ORF Sport+)

DR

VGTRK/RTR

NTV +

NHK (BS1)

Viasat Sport Baltic

SuperSport

SKY Italia

Record TV/Record News

Stod 2 Sport

RUV

SingTel mio TV

SKY Sports NZ

There maybe more involved like SBS ESPN in South Korea. An updated list will come.

Cyprus' RIK1 aired the Opening Ceremony and will likely do the same for the Closing.

Not only is SBS postponing its regularly scheduled dramas tonight for its Olympics coverage, but so are KBS and MBC in South Korea. Especially with South Korean Olympians being involved.

can i just say how much i'm loving the NYT's coverage of these games?

there's the "crash filled final" halfpipe slideshow - and the move by move graphic on ipod's winning run

the brilliant luge in times square, giving us some much needed, and shocking, perspective on winter games drops

"chasing gold (and jeans that fit" about skiiers butts

they broke the gay luge video outrage story that was blowing up earlier this morning

the graphics have been really terrific, and some good profiles mixed with critical coverage. i'm very pleased. i don't know if other papers and sports mags are doing equally good work.

We've witnessed Germany's Sport 1, Xsport in the Ukraine, and Slovakia's Markiza TV all announce they will carry solely Olympic hockey matches (not counting Latvia TV3 and TV6), since that's very popular with those nations, and viewers won't worry over jumping away from the sports footage. Poland's NC+ will show some Sochi 2014 hockey too but also alpine skiing and snowboarding starting on February 10 through nSport and Canal + Sport. Too bad it won't show women's hockey games though.

Albania's RTSH covers Sochi 2014 through TSH, TSH HD, and RTSH Sport. Visited its website a couple of times, and while it acknowledges that it covers the Winter Olympics, and the problem is it didn't take the take the time for Olympic programming to be mentioned like many of its neighbors does. We can presume that TSH 1 will only the ceremonies with TSH and RTSH Sport handling the Olympic coverage likely the latter going 24 hours. If I can find some info from outside RTSH through a Google search, I'll let you know.

Been away for several days largely due to the fact that I became very busy working in retail--even working longer hours up to last night due to the newly-received massive federal tax return check customers. Endured a six-day work streak that ended yesterday. Need the money...

Will gradually work myself back into this thread. That will take me at least a day. Hopefully tomorrow, I'll delve more and go all out after conjuring up a list of entities before the crazy work schedule beckons me back the next day...

Germany's Sport1 really is showing hockey.
I was wondering what they were going to do. They paid money to broadcast and in the beginning were showing only 1hour infomercials in the mornings.

Strange to me since I don't know Sport1 all that well being here in the US (heard of that for years). But I think it's good that such a popular winter sport like hockey in Germany (think the DEL) would garner bigger and more complete play from beginning to end as opposed to jump-ins and jump-outs on ARD and ZDF with their sublicensing. It's a bit unfortunate that Sport1 doesn't show the full Olympic hockey lineup like Xsport in the Ukraine is doing. It only shows a handful of the women's games but would show the German women's games, according to its schedule. Should've been something both ZDF and ARD should've done in the last Winter Olympics and may look into for Rio with a few other sports.

Argentina's Canal 7 TV Publica is just showing approximately 2 hours of daily Sochi 2014 coverage, coming in at 3pm Argentina time (Atlantic time) with some special emphasis on the Sochi 2014 Argentina team. TyC Sports is far more comprehensive with its coverage.

Personally, I think it was a damn shame that SANOC would refuse to permit 17-year old skiier Sive Speelman to participate in Sochi even after being invited by the IOC for having actually qualified, leaving South Africa as the only one of the BRICS nations not to be in Russia. Surely this was about money. But I digress. Forgot to put this in but SuperSport invited sports fans in sub-Saharan Africa, not just in South Africa, to "feel the chill of the Winter Olympics" live on SuperSport with its SSHD6 and SS6 being the 24-hour live Olympic channel. SSHD5 and SS5 were the spillover channels. All coverage was supplemented with a daily 20-minute news bulletin which will be a round-up of all the happenings in and around Sochi. At the end of each day a bumper one-hour highlights package will bring the viewer up to speed with all the day’s events as well as the medal’s standings. Historical Flashback brought people down memory lane on past and iconic Winter Olympic events in the Games' 90-year history. Where's the promos?

Looking at how North Korea's KCTV covered Sochi to show what North Koreans were watching with help from SBS and ABU (says KBS helped but SBS only has rights in both Koreas), even when it didn't send any athletes. Due to time and programming differences, it only showed 3 minutes of highlights from the Opening Ceremony and allowed just one long form event in primetime with localized fonts.

Thanks for that, Reindeer. I knew that at least some of YLE's Sochi sportcasting team would remain in Helsinki calling the live coverage on monitors, just that I didn't know that Pasila is a Helsinki suburb, where YLE's and even MTV3's headquarters and TV studios are based, and referenced as such. Being one of Russia's next door neighbors, one may have presumed the whole team would've been there.

Just this past Saturday after VGTRK's coverage of the full and live Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony was posted here on these boards, I made a comment about its Opening Ceremony co-host, its main studio anchor, its Sports Editor, and biathlon sportscaster Dmitry Guberniev made the mistake in miscalling the Uzbek Sochi delegation as if they were Tajikistan as they were coming into the stadium during the Parade of Nations. First of all, Tajikistan was at Sochi and indeed marched but only sent 1 athlete, compared to Uzbekistan's 3. And the Tajiks had already marched seven nations earlier from Uzbekistan in the Russian alphabet. Guberniev later apologized the next day for this mistake that prompted angry social media reactions from Uzbeks. Very brief moment but it's there.

Dmitry Guberniev's apology to Uzbekistan:

Emil Hegle Svendsen, Aksel Lund Svindal, Petter Northug, Therese Johaug, Marit Bjørgen, Helene Olafsen, Oyvind Alsaker, Harald Bradeli, Asbjorne Myrhe, Kaspar Wikestad, Christian Paasche, and Håvard Bøkko all in the Norway's TV2 promo for its Sochi 2014 coverage. They all face the camera and express excitement, sometimes injecting some humor, before the frost comes revealing the TV2 logo. Finally and belatedly we got a TV2 promo in this thread!

You might as well get what's left of the Hong Kong Sochi 2014 Olympic ice hockey TV schedule from the various TVB networks there. There was a little more, including coverage of the women's semifinals and gold and bronze medal matches. But they're now hard to find online unless cached. Still will work on finding the rest.

Sportsmax Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic TV schedule from February 11-16

www.sportsmax.tv/download/?...sochi_sportsmax...2014,_2014...

Never before had the Arab States Broadcasting Union conducted a Winter Olympics before Sochi. With only Winter Olympians coming into Sochi last month hailing from the Arab world (Tunisia and Morocco though Algeria would've too had it sent its sole athlete), why would it bother. But the more Olympians and coverage from there, the bigger the interest. Reflecting the modesty in the Winter Olympics, the ASBU only had a small footprint at the Sochi IBC with only 20 people there. Did conduct 15 hours daily in Arabic with over 700 hours in English--and the diversity in the programming is there daily varied depending on the day and sports even with 14 of the 20 member states used the ASBU's Opening Ceremony. Not a bad Winter Olympics broadcasting debut for them, I'd say.

In keeping with the recent tradition of getting Canadian Winter Olympians involved with the Juno Awards, the all-Winnipeg women's gold medal curling heroes fresh from Sochi 2014 of Jennifer Jones, Jill Officer, Kaitlyn Lawes, Kirsten Wall, Dawn MacEwen presented the 2014 Juno Fan Choice Award presented by TD (Toronto Dominion, for the uninitiated) live at the Winnipeg MTS Centre on CTV, which of course no longer holds the Canadian TV/online/mobile rights to the Olympics. The award, in case you're wondering, went to Justin Bieber for the fourth consecutive time, prompting some strong boos from among the crowd during a time of his personal and legal issues. I guess those, his apparent arrogance, people getting tired of him winning it, and the fact of his still-perceived teenybopper image does not cut any slack for him (Later, when Serena Ryder accepted her Juno for Songwriter of the Year, she stood up for the Bieber and pleaded for more public Canadian support because of his talent). Before that, they engaged in a curling duel with Saskatoon's Sheepdogs during the Juno Week festivities in Winnipeg. It goes from 13:56-17:35. Ryder's speech on Bieber is at 26:10-26:33. It's the full CTV presentation of the 2014 Juno Awards here.

NBC's social media Olympic metrics are just in: among them, there was rapid growth to be sure in watching Sochi 2014 especially among the young with smartphones, online, and tablets but also among all ages compared from Beijing. Not yet a widespread game-changer though. Those who even saw the cable coverage still turned out for the tape-delayed NBC primetime segments. So the latter's present Olympic TV structure still carries credence, while still struggling to credibly measure the online/mobile Olympic media viewing. No doubt will get bigger come Rio.

As already mentioned on Ten's Sochi coverage thread, the Winter Olympics, despite decent ratings and upward revenue, hadn't boost Ten in the ratings race or encouraging viewers to watch its programming roster partly due to its expensive costs during the summer. Given the amount of Sochi 2014 coverage SuperSport offered for Sochi with primarily one channel and a supplemental at select times during spillover issues, some have complained when those who would watch SuperSport's past Winter Olympics coverage up to Torino recall there were two SuperSport channels doing it. Several SA posters in the following link say SS didn't get to show more events live and instead headed to the tape-delay route and repeats to fill the gaps during the day--not to mention plenty of events not shown at all on TV. Many decrying it's poor overall. Yes, I did print out SuperSport's Sochi 2014 TV schedule. Better than Vancouver but at least two-three channels would do it. Turns out later on that SuperSport was only allowed half of the 6 OBS-produced feeds available. Men's figure skating's free skate later delayed airing on Saturday morning at 6:45 was dropped to accomodate curling and ice hockey in another example.

But as I said earlier here regarding SuperSport, there were lots of other sports going on at that time to cater in terms of priority and popularity. Because of South Africa's lack of proven Winter Olympic success, it doesn't get as much sufficient interest (or amount of channels) as it would in the Summer Olympics version. Sure, it could've devise some Olympic-specific channels. But South Africans and Sub-Saharan Africans who watch the Winter Olympics and passionate about them are in a small minority.

As far as France Televisions' coverage of Sochi is concerned, it garnered lots of criticisms within France, worried that its image had taken a serious hit because of its commentating team despite France's best showing in an offshore Winter Olympics and high ratings for FT's 200 hours of coverage. Even considering perhaps the Olympics should follow the 98% of sports already based on French pay-TV like going to Canal +

More criticisms about France Televisions' Olympic commentators as part of the barrage and resisting them coming from L'Express with an angle of wanting to put the older ones out to pasture for their lack of professionalism and consistency during it in the face of an ever rapidly-evolving sports media

Sportsmax's and Sportsmax 2's promo to its live coverage of the Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony to the English West Indies nations and territories (and Cuba)

TV2 Norge decided to have a little look back at Norway's silver medal winning snowboarder Stale Sandbech's run in the slopestyle with imported excitable and briefly profane English commentary on the judges' decision thinking that it was gold-worthy from the Danish TV2 comentators earlier that day. Makes me envy the Scandinavians in this aspect: they're allowed to not worry about profanity in their broadcasting standards even though many of them do speak English very well

This is excellent lol.

TRM's Moldova 1 had exclusive TV coverage of Sochi 2014 on Moldova 1 with online coverage from Teleradio-Moldova's website to help cover all four Moldovan Winter Olympians. Doesn't say how many hours or even had a TV schedule, but I'll find them when I get a chance

This very much confirms what we were talking about in the CBC coverage thread about the CBC utilized the OBS feeds more than it usually did, especially after the Canadian Olympic Host Broadcast Media Consortium pulled all the stops for Vancouver also in terms of production, frame rate, and dividing its staff in Sochi, Toronto, and Montreal (for Radio-Canada Television in this case). Even with its own cameras.

Oh, and about the CBC's deal with YouTube that many of us had noticed, even if us outside of Canada couldn't get access of its coverage due to geoblockage:

Regrettably, we didn't get into the German promos for Sochi 2014 while the Games were going on, or better yet, in the anticipation to it. But better late than never here, right? We'll correct this as we go along. In this case, this ZDF Olympia promo set was DVRed and uploaded on February 18 looking at what was coming up at the present segment's end with a slate of events to be shown on ZDF that day starting with the upcoming Slovenia-Austria ice hockey Round of 16 game followed by alpine skiing, Nordic combined, biathlon, and short track. Not to mention a coverage sponsor IDs with Deutschland's Olympia-Partners Sparkassen and Audi with a Wetten Dass...? (live in Dusseldorf) promo

Apparently, this is a another promo for FranceTV Sport's exclusive coverage of Sochi 2014 centering on a French ski jumper, possibly Emmanuel Chedal, back in Vancouver to give the highest placing for France in men's ski jumping back then. Still using the score that it used for London. Then again, it may be FranceTV Sport's overall sports theme.

Utah Sports Examiner's Brian Shaw wonders why women's ski jumping wasn't televised on NBC's primetime segment as it made its historic Winter Olympic debut. Largely because, I say, of established star power from other sports (Shaun White) and the proven longstanding appeal of figure skating to key demographics held far greater priority to the mainstream viewers. Already planned that way when the schedule was designed. Had an American medalled in that, NBC would surely gotten it some airtime there for some patriotic appeal at least. Did covered women's luge during primetime with Erin Hamlin getting bronze, a US first in the luge event, as noted in the piece:

Yeah no doubt, there were obviously some Americans who defected to the CBC's all-live coverage from NBC. No doubt that will happen for some come Rio De Janeiro. I would too if I had the means.
