The TV coverage is "more than 200 jours" ;-) Regarding the comparison of the number of hours, not fair to count the same program that could be broadcast in different languages or different numeric/thematics networks as a coverage from a single network. A note about the CBC breakdown : There are actually no duplicate events airing concurrently aside from the OC/CC and major gold medal events like ice hockey. Each of the 5 official channels is covering different events at the same time from a peak of 12 multilateral feeds. Well remember that there will be Radio Canada broadcasts and RDS which are French-language simulcast with CBC and TSN, though there will probably be a more Quebecois skew to what Radio Canada and RDS broadcast. JMarkSnow2012 Posted February 4, 2014 Report Share Posted February 4, 2014 CBC is a public network (like BBC), but it doesn't require a license, so any Canadian (even those with no TV at home and no subscription) can go online or download the CBC Olympic app to watch any of the 12 live feeds or the 'CBC TV' simulcast, effectively removing the requirement to own a TV in the first place. I believe that's a first. Or am I wrong ? Ah, I see where you're coming from. Technically, you're right, but the BBC live coverage is actually available to UK non-licence-payers. They simply have to lie and risk a hefty fine or imprisonment when the question "Do you have a current TV licence?" appears. See what I mean about "world's most primitive subscription system"? Only thing I've noticed so far is that its a slightly deeper blue and they got rid of the London "line" pattern. Surprisingly they kept those tacky angled flags, even though they felt like they were to go with London's overall look. Meanwhile, as you heard, CBC's first web stream kinda crashed out of the gate. Lirodon Posted February 6, 2014 Report Share Posted February 6, 2014 Okay, actually I did notice something different; they animate in differently, and there's a snow effect on them too (but the font is still quite cheap looking in my opinion). And also, CBC's graphics are also pretty cool, a lot of red, white, gold, and diamonds; they've got that Russian avant-garde look quite well. But another curious thing I've noticed is that they're using the OBS lower-thirds for the studio segments (which kinda clash with it a bit). I don't think CTV, NBC, or CBC on the previous coverage have ever done that before (CBC just used a red recolor of their previous graphics for Beijing, CTV had a new design that kinda evolved into TSN's new look, and NBC's now just using their normal sports look too with extra gold trim). There's a useful interactive panel with stats and live results which I think is linked directly with ATOS systems. However the audio needs tweaking (you almost couldn't hear the commentators). While I think we have to accept now that each games isn't going to get it's own look, I do think come Rio it's time for more of a revolution than an evolution. Durban Sandshark Posted February 7, 2014 Report Share Posted February 7, 2014 Yesterday, it actually turns out that Star Sports 2 is having supplementary coverage to install select Winter Olympic events on its channel and programming block when Star Sports 4 can't on theirs due to overlapping concerns. That's what I saw when I looked at Star Sports TV guide. Going be like this everyday it seems, but look at them more closely then. Coverage actually starts at 3am South Asia time with the luge training for 3.5 hours live, simulcasted on Star Sports 4 and Star Sports 2 HD. Now luge is very likely the most popular sport in the Winter Olympic Games for the South Asian world with a prime contender from India named Shiva. Interesting it would have that kind of coverage when India can't fly its own flag. Then at 9:30pm both those channels will simulcast the Opening Ceremony. SS2 comes in tomorrow simulcasting with SS2 HD at 2:10pm but Star Sports 2 HD cuts short after 3 hours to make way for EPL highlights with Star Sports 2 goes on for 9 hours. Star Sports 4 returns the next day for 5 hours and 10 minutes at 12:20 pm with the Star Sports 2 HD simulcast and Star Sports 2 comes in with recorded footage at 5:30pm Sport TV Portugal opened its Sochi coverage today with Filhos Dos Olimpicos and then the live Opening Ceremony on Sport TV 1 and then repeated later tonight on Sport TV Live. Apparently it's spread among Sport TV 1, Sport TV 2, Sport TV 3, and Sport TV Live. No designated channel to be the hub for it. Though if pressed it would very much be Sport TV 2 holding the most consistent Sochi 2014 coverage. Interestingly, Sport TV Live will have mostly recorded footage. I just knew SABC wasn't going to be left out on the Olympic coverage coming up repping the FTA South African TV coverage, with SuperSport on the Pay-TV side and given how essential South Africa is! And it was completed very late close to Sochi. SABC 2 is showing the Opening Ceremony, if I got it right, on tape delay at 23:00 according to its TV guide for an hour of highlights. That's the thing. Many of these nations and areas that just now struck deals aren't exactly hotbeds for winter sports or have a WOG medal pedigree (like Australia and New Zealand now do) to conduct deals earlier. A few of these Winter Olympic sports hold only novelty value in those places there, and those places, like in the West Indies for all the beloved Jamaican bobsled popularity, can't carry much clout to come immediately in shelving out money to the IOC. Those broadcasters will still broadcast the Winter Olympics because it's still a very significant event worldwide and help cultivate a decent TV and online audience and national interest in the long run. Surely the likes of SABC, SportsMax, and OSN were no doubt going to show them on their programming schedules regardless for they are developing areas; from those areas, they all just need the IOC world feed and won't have to make periodical announcements regarding their national coverage plans like the bigger networks rights holders do (while still respecting their other sports broadcasting professional obligations going on simultaneously). I too strongly believe the IOC has gotten greedy with the TV money over the years--look at the initial balking from the essential Canadian market before the CBC ultimately agreed. Easier to wait and hold out long as possible until closer to the Opening Ceremony when the asking price is more affordable and attractive. The Summer Olympics are a slightly different matter of course with greater worldwide interest in those places, where those nations are more competitive. A series of :05 promo teaser bumpers promoting Markiza TV's exclusive Sochi 2014 Slovakian Olympic hockey team games coverage on its channel Where those teasers are about in full. Slovakia's hockey team are ready for Sochi when they arrive, and so are their fans either at home watching the games on Markiza TV or in-person at the rink, starting against the USA! 700,000 Bulgarians tuned in Friday night for the Opening Ceremony live from Sochi on BNT1 and BNT HD. Also have the link to BNT's Sochi 2014 sportscasting team that will bring 250 hours of live coverage with emphasis on the Bulgarian athletes. Saturdays and Sundays will be just from 1-3 with the first hour devoted to the "event of the day", reflecting all that. Not listed on either Wikipedia's or the IOC Sochi 2014 broadcasters lists, but Singapore's all-powerful Mediacorp bought the Sochi 2014 rights from Dentsu for the Singapore market. MediaCorp's Channel 5 has the rights with both ceremonies live and commercial-free at 12am and replays at 1pm the following days each. Its programming blocks are very limited, just 2-3.5 hours daily mostly in the afternoon from 2:30-4:15, save for live ceremonies coverage. So they're more like daily highlights. Record News is actually where the coverage is greater, coming in 3-4 times a day roughly from 7 (or 8, usually) to 11 then again at noon to the late afternoon and late at night live from 2:45 to 6am. Some days Record News will start things earlier and may have some event it wants to show (live or delayed) or daily news highlights. Record News actually started things for the Record portion with coverage on February 6 for 2.5 hours at 2:30-5pm. Problem is, from those programming blocks, we don't know what Record will show, Brazilian athletes aside. Cyprus' PIK 2 does even less in its Sochi 2014 TV coverage with the Cypriots back in Russia for the Olympics for the first time since making its Olympic debut back in Moscow 1980. Did show the full Opening Ceremony, but its daily coverage is restricted to highlights for 1 hour or 1 hour and 15 minutes at 9pm with a focus whenever possible on the Cypriot Winter Olympic athletes. Most of its regular programming is youth-oriented with animated TV shows and sometimes music until the evening. But many of the events televised are not simulcasted; specific differences in programming events will appear. Not only that, BHT1 currently has a series of short retrospective documentaries airing at night commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics! We just had the announcements the last two week of Fox Sports Latin America and ESPN Latin America broadcasting Sochi 2014 very late to the start of the Games following Claro Sports' lead in Latin American excluding Brazil. Now we had word from that same two week period that Argentina's TyC Sports will show them too for the third consecutive Winter Olympics but exclusively in Argentina to go along with them to coincide with its new HD channel on Cablevision. TyC Sports will generally air them 1-8am Argentina (or Atlantic) time, though on February 9, it aired an additional block from noon to 4:30. It's destined for eight hours a day of live broadcasting and will produce a morning five-hour show, that latter block, with every sporting news and its star show -Estudio Fútbol- will change its presenter (Gonzalo Bonadeo will replace Alejandro Fabri, who will anchor in the afternoon news).
