Sochi 2014 Olympic Media Updates

Just announced on the Miss USA pageant: the 2013 Miss Universe pageant will be staged at the Crocus City Hall (an auditorium actually) in Moscow on November 9, 2013. A beauty pageant in Moscow in NOVEMBER??? It means 2 things, obviously:

1. Miss Russia, even if she looks like a dog, will be among the Top 5 finalists; and

2. Because the pageant is being carried on NBC, it will be a build-up to the Sochi coverage. I imagine the swimsuit footage might even be shot at some hotel in Sochi and then just spliced into the live proceedings in Moscow.

So watch on Nov 9 to see some previews of Sochi.

i swear, the russian rep is no good and will surely be taking a spot in the top 15 from a deserving contestants. i doubt we'll see any feature about sochi unless they'll be going to sochi. or they pull a sao paulo styling hosting where brasilia was mentioned despite the contestants not going to brasilia at all.

Baron: the Miss World pageant used to be held between oct-dec. the Atlanta edition of Miss World in 1991 was held December 28th. but Miss World this year will be in September.

Hopefully SABC will have learned its lesson from the last Winter Olympics in Vancouver and allow a Supersport sublicense for much more comprehensive Winter Olympics in Sochi and not rely on daily highlights and the ceremonies across Sub-Saharan Africa. We know Africa lacks a lot of snow and ice and mountainous ranges, but expanding the Winter Olympics audience there with comprehensive coverage like it did for Torino should be a priority. Never know, we could finally see an African medalist in the WO in a generation.

Are there any nods to the 2014 Winter Olympics from Quebecor's TVA Sports yet like promos?

Meredith Viera returns for NBC's Sochi 2014 coverage (and ends her NBC News ties there).

Just mentioned from yesterday on the Rio counterpart thread but worth mentioning here: RAI and SKY Italia officially return together for Sochi and Rio with the former getting the SKY Italia Olympic sublicense.

Sorry Australian sports fans and Australians in general, but Ten isn't doing the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in 3D even when the IOC is strongly committed to going that route in its broadcasts--and it doesn't look like FOXTEL will do likewise as its 3D sports channel is up in the air due to ESPN, a source of its 3D sports programming, is scrapping its 3D channel because of a lack of interest.

Announcing TV 2 Norge's Sochi 2014 play-by-play broadcast team! The well-experienced Jorn Sundby makes the jump from longtime Olympic broadcaster NRK to announce ski jumping; Kaspars Wilkestad will engage in snowboarding and freestyle skiing; Harald Bredeli, known for his baseball play-by-play and another NRK sportscaster, does biathlon; Øyvind Alsaker will call alpine skiing; Luge, bobsled, and skeleton will all be called by Mads Kaggestad, a noted cycling commentator; Jorgen Hugs does curling; Christian Paasche gets cross country nordic skiing; Morten Langli, TV 2's hockey and soccer sportscaster, continues his hockey endeavors; Asbjørn Myhre, known for TV 2 in hockey, soccer, and baseball. announces figure skating; and former BBC man Eric Koren will have short track. Analysts for TV 2's OL Sowill be announced later in the fall. Interesting that there's no female commentators who were announced. As a nation that's committed towards gender equity, surely TV 2 has at least one or two that would've been in the fold. Likely that will change when Rio De Janeiro comes a-calling with more sports to choose from. TV 2's Sochi coverage will be, preliminarily, around 1700 hours with 5000 hours planned for Rio with not just TV 2 proper but TV 2 Sumo and eight sports channels from its 13 other TV sister channels to use.

We got more details into MTG will deal with its debut Olympic Games coverage in Sochi next year. It will involve commercial breaks, a first for Swedish TV after decades of public broadcasters SVT having the honors. There will be commercials in sports where it's natural like hockey and alpine skiing andother where they have to be creative and flexible. It will sell its general coverage to four major sponsors and will be everywhere even on the net. Still, MTG assures that commercials will not interfere with the Olympic enjoyment. Advertising pricing will be expensive than ordinary MTG programming. Its TV3 will have two Olympic programs in the new Year leading up to Sochi with one starring former high jumper Patrik Sjoberg meeting famous Olympians and another with the working title "The Dream of Sochi", where viewers follow a series of Swedish Olympians - including Jens Byggmark, Marcus Hellner, Henrik Lundqvist and ski cross star Anna Holmlund - in their preparation for "the big sports party".

Finally found a promo online referring to Network Ten being "the new home for the Winter Olympics" on Australian TV. A brief promo explaining this in what will be the first of several Ten Winter Olympic promos. Looks really nice with several Winter Olympics sports inside the Olympic rings! Let's remember Ten did the Summer Olympics in 1984 and 1988 and never came back to the Olympics until now after 25 years. For you, Sir Roltel! :)

A promo, but more likely the intro to, of the upcoming Modern Times Group/Viasat series "Dreams of Sochi" with all of the athletes in various winter sports profiled that was shown on Sweden's TV3

NBC Sports Prez Mark Lazarus says NBC's coverage of Sochi will not tap into the growing anti-homosexual controversy in Russia. At least not in the beginning. If that perists during it, NBC will not hestitate to place its two cents on it. Trust me, I don't think it will be pretty. Just don't interrupt the Closing Ceremony like you did with Vancouver and London with a sitcom again, OK?

Unfortunately, Ryan Seacrest will be involved in some capacity with NBC's Sochi 2014 coverage

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/ryan-seacrests-civic-entertainment-inks-448032

Oh yeah, NBC plans to do a documentary on the 20th anniversary on Nancy-Tonya "whack heard 'round the world" and all of the bizarre media-circus aftermath leading up to Lillehammer that will be aired during its Sochi coverage. ESPN, you may recall, plans to do one about it too as part of its 30 For 30. That's coming in November. But NBC scored a big coup: it managed to an exclusive interview with the media-shy Nancy Kerrigan, who hasn't spoken about it, and narrated by Mary Carillo!

Last June, it was announced that on September 9 Television de Radio-Canada, the FTA arm of the French CBC and will be part of the coverage in Canada, will be known as ICI Radio-Canada Tele. Scroll down to slogans and branding for the explanation. Don't like this name change.

Australia's first Winter Olympic gold medalists, Steven Bradbury and Alisa Camplin from Salt Lake City, join Ten's Winter Olympic broadcast team. Look for them to be also on FOXTEL's team, I'm sure, like they were when they did double duty with Nine.

From the looks of this structure, France 3 will dominant the daily Olympics coverage with it and France 2 alternating the afternoon (with each one doing the news with the other doing the coverage). France 2 takes over in the evening with France 3 doing the 2-hour nightly late night review show.

The Australian Financial Review reports that upon Ten getting the 2014 Winter Olympics FTA TV rights Network Ten plans to have both itself and One provide live coverage, plus an additional 8 online channels covering every event, a first for a Australian free-to-air TV network. Network Ten will need a lot of online servers to provide this amount of coverage. Expect to see more frequent promos at the end of this year. This would a tremendous boon for its at times maligned Ten Sport online live streaming and boost its quality. It's possible that the online channel would possess, like with the Canadian Olympic Broadcast Media did online for its multiple London streaming channels, the IOC world English-language feed--and use a few of its own commentators whenever an Aussie Winter Olympian is heavily featured in the sport. Or Ten could import BBC, NBC, and CBC sportscasters for events like ice hockey, biathlon, nordic combined and curling since Australia either is nonexistant in it or just making up the numbers in them, given its history/pedigree there.

Norway's TV2 will broadcast at least 15 hours live daily from Sochi. But like with their Swedish neighbors regarding their transition from SVT to the Modern Times Group's Viasat and its FTA channels, Norwegians will have to deal with commercials for the first time in their Olympic coverage after decades of NRK running the show.

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=no&u=http://www.nettavisen.no/sport/vinter/article3566547.ece&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dtv%2B2%2Bol%2B2014%2Bsotsji%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D929

It used to be than many Asians nations were going to be under one umbrella for the Olympic TV rights outside of China, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and The Philippines--stretching all the way from Afghanistan to Southeast Asia. No more. The IOC announced today Star India gets the Sochi and Rio De Janiero Olympic TV rights for the increasingly-lucrative South Asia region.

Dentsu now conquers Afghanistan, Brunei, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam to go along with the Japanese ad agency already has with Central Asia for Sochi, Rio De Janiero, and the Youth Summer Olympic Games in Nanjing as the gatekeeper media right holder. Interesting that Hong Kong, The Philippines, and Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) are now part of this after years of being independent markets. Just announced hours ago.

There's an online petition right now to get NBC have Rachel Maddow in Sochi as its "human rights correspondent" to cover Russia's anti-homosexuality movement during the peacock's coverage. Interesting idea. Not sure how it's going to play out in the coming months, assuming if she's interested to join the team. Very wary about this if the Putin government knows for sure she is an out lesbian, and she may get denied entry into Russia because on journalistic grounds on what she may cover. Like to see her there, but I just don't want to see her in danger. Surely this issue will not dissapate before the OC.

Ireland's RTE will do the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics next year through its 24-hour news network RTE News Now with full coverage of both the opening and closing ceremonies...but for sports only daily highlights coverage, since Ireland doesn't have a Winter Olympics pedigree and won't submit a lot of Winter Olympians anyway, let alone win medals. Surely the full events will be online for the Irish public to see.

Off topic, but Apollo Anton Ohno is the greatest name ever in the history of sport. Fact. :P

It's very alliterative but it does not conjure up pictures of Ohno's sport. There are also names like Rocky Balboa, Bob Cvrtlik, Anton Shikuriludze or Shahkisvili. How about: Iranian weightlifter Said Mohammmadpourkarkaragh? And the 1984 gold-medal winning US Men's Indoor Volleyball with the most same initialed names: Dusty Dvorak, Karch Kiraly, Pat Powers, Steve Salmons -- no other Olympic team in history is known to boast as many same-initialed players as that team.

But in terms of achievement, probably the really greatest names (repeat, multiple medals) are: Jim Thorpe, Paavo Nurmi, Jesse Owens, Al Oerter, Mark Spitz, Nikolai Andrianov, and of course Michael Phelps, the greatest one of all: 18 golds*, 2 silvers, 2 bronzes (over 3 Games). *In terms of Olympic golds, NO OTHER athlete has won double-digit gold medals as Phelps has.

For the winter athletes: these are the greatest: Bjorn Daehlie (Norway) - he is the most bemedalled winter olympian in winter Olympics winning 8 golds and 4 silvers in dominating cross -country skiing during 1992, 1994 and 1998 Olympics.

2.) Lyubov Yegorova (Russia) - she is the most successful female athlete in Winter Olympic. Just like Bjorn, she dominated cross country skiing in 1992 and 1994 Olympics, winning 6 golds and 3 silvers. and

3) Eric Heiden -- sweeping ALL 5 long speedskating golds at Lake Placid 1980 - the biggest gold haul by ONE athlete in one Winter Games!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_multiple_Olympic_gold_medalists

********************************************************************

Nice anecdote about Larisa Latynina: apparently she was present on the night in London when Phelps was going to break her record. When he did, she asked to present his medal. But the IOC and FINA refused, saying it was against the rules. How stupid and idiotic the IOC has been!! What a sweet moment for the 2 winners, for the fans and for history to have the baton passed from one record-holder to the next!! What a wasted opportunity! BIGGEST BOZOS of all time: the IOC!!

(Man, if I was Latynina, I would've knocked over that official and gone over and handed Michael that 19th Olympic medal of his! Damn the consequences!)

Sure is interesting on several fronts that RTE is working on the Winter Olympics for the first time at a time when RTE is dropping sports like flies due to the still-struggling economic situation in Ireland. Presumably, the network has song rights thrown in for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. More interesting is the fact that RTE News Now has the Irish TV broadcast rights for Sochi as the nation comes out of the Winter Olympic Dark Ages in broadcasting, so to speak--I mean, Africa has been getting Winter Olympic broadcasting since Nagano, if not for just South Africa in Lillehammer. Was News Now not intended to air original or new programming? Could this be a future sign for allowing sports to be shown on it? Might have been a reality much earlier if that proposed RTE Plus actually aired with more sports, which apparently got passed over in favor for RTE News Now and planned to show more original content and programming and would satisfy the Broadcast Authority of Ireland's criteria.

Julie Strømsvåg, Carsten Skjelbreid, Davy Wathne, Annemarta Giske and Arill Riise will be Norway's TV 2's live Sochi Winter Olympic studio hosts. Just announced hours ago today. Stromsvag and Skjelbreid will begin things in the daytime and will let Giske and Riise finish things off. Wathne is going to be the ski jumping studio host at a separate TV2 studio at the venue.

They could have at least let her present the flowers. I remember a medal ceremony at Beijing where an athlete from Azerbaijan won gold in one of the judo classes and they let the President of Azerbaijan participate by presenting the bouquets. Dang IOC and IF poobahs think they are the stars of the medal presentations.

I suspect that subtle (and probably far-away) consequences of exceptions like the above would inevitably have led to a rigorous enforcement of the ban in London.

Anybody know how they allocate the IOC members for the medal presentations? I've noticed for a while, for example, that it's often one of Oz's members, Coates or Gosper, who end up presenting gold medals to Aussies who win at swimming. I suspect they probably nominate the events they want to do presentations for, and likely put their hands up for the ones where their nations are the favourite, but does anybody know for sure?

Yes I think they nominate the events they want to do and are allocated for the events where their nation is the favourite.

They must. At some spot in the official IOC hotel where they pick up their tix to a particular event, they must also inform some Awards Team scheduler/coordinator that they intend to be at venue X and together with an IF official, want to hand out the hardware to the winners.
