Alonso to Red Bull? F1 rumour mill takes a spin

(Reuters) - Ferrari's Fernando Alonso emerged as a possible surprise candidate for the vacant Red Bull seat on Sunday after the Formula One world champions refused to rule him out.

After Alonso's manager Luis Garcia Abad was seen entering the Red Bull motorhome at the Hungarian Grand Prix, speculation ran wild that he had entered the frame to replace Australian Mark Webber alongside world champion Sebastian Vettel next season.

Abad later assured reporters that he had talked to Red Bull principal Christian Horner about rising Spanish prospect and Red Bull young driver Carlos Sainz junior, son of the former world rally champion.

But, in a paddock that thrives on intrigue, speculation inevitably followed despite Alonso being signed to Ferrari until the end of 2016 and Horner did nothing to nip it in the bud.

"We're in a fortunate position where there is quite a lot of interest in the seat for next year," he said when asked about Alonso.

"Any conversations between any other drivers or any other parties are always going to remain confidential," added Horner when it was pointed out that his words hardly constituted a denial.

"Of course there have been quite a few drivers who have expressed an interest in the seat, as you can imagine," said the Briton, who had spoken earlier in the weekend of some surprising approaches from inside and outside the paddock.

Asked whether Alonso was an option, he merely replied: "Is Alonso available? I don't know. You ask him?"

Alonso has previously said he expects to see out his career at Ferrari, a team he has likened to a second family, but he has lost out to Vettel and Red Bull for three successive seasons and fell further behind after Sunday's race.

While he is expected to stay at Ferrari, the speculation will not be unwelcome at Red Bull since it could have the double effect of sowing unease at their Italian rivals while also applying some pressure to Kimi Raikkonen.

The Lotus driver is a leading candidate to partner Vettel, with young Australian Daniel Ricciardo the other recognized contender after impressing at Red Bull sister team Toro Rosso.

The speculation might also be useful to Alonso in reminding Ferrari of his importance to them and the need to pull out all the stops to provide him with a winning car.

Ferrari's team principal Stefano Domenicali, who was asked about Alonso's future subsequent to Horner's comments, shrugged at the speculation.

Asked what he would say to the Spaniard - who turns 32 on Monday - to convince him to stay, the Italian smiled:

"Happy birthday for tomorrow," he said. "No, I'm joking. It's about team work. We have to deliver a job. Full stop. This is the same for everyone, not only for him."

Senna’s iconic Suzuka lap brought to life by amazing ad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDXPiLkHhlU

The late Ayrton Senna's iconic lap of Suzuka in 1989 has been faithfully brought back to life by sound and light in an ad.

Senna was controversially disqualified from the race itself after a collision with rival, nemesis, and McLaren-Honda team-mate Alain Prost, but his brilliant qualifying lap for that year's Japanese Grand Prix became one of the iconic moments in Formula One.

The flamboyant Brazilian's best qualifying lap of 1:38.041 was over one-and-a-half-seconds quicker than Prost's, putting him on pole for the race.

By way of a tribute, Japanese manufacturer Honda has launched a new commercial, bringing that brilliant lap to life using sound and light.

Thanks to data stored by the Prost's team, the ad has recreated the motion and engine sound for the flying lap - with no actual car on the road.

It is a quite spectacular feat, and has proved very popular with Senna fans - although World of Sport is sure Prost supporters will find way to criticise.

Indian Grand Prix on the skids, says Bernie Ecclestone

The Indian Grand Prix is likely to be dropped from next year’s Formula One calendar according to the sport’s chief executive officer, Bernie Ecclestone.

“Is India going to happen next year? Probably not,” he said at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Asked about the reason for his doubts, Ecclestone added: “Very political.” However, the Indian motor sport federation president, Vicky Chandhok, said Ecclestone and organisers, the Jaypee Group, were trying to find a new date.

Ecclestone, who draws up the calendar, is trying to shuffle a potential 22 grands prix into a schedule which the teams would prefer not to extend beyond 20 races. That is because of mooted new races next year in Austria, the United States and Russia, on top of this year’s 19-race calendar.

Russia misses application deadline for 2014 Sochi race

Russia has missed the deadline to submit its application to the FIA to hold a Formula 1 race at Sochi in 2014.

Although work is ongoing at the Sochi venue, and organisers announced last week that they had pencilled in an October 19 date, doubts have been cast on the event amid a dispute they are having with the Russian Automobile Federation.

According to correspondence distributed by the RAF on Tuesday, it had until July 31 to formally submit to motor racing's governing body an official application for its country to host the Formula 1 race next year.

But the RAF refused to lodge the necessary paperwork by that date because of financial disputes between itself and Sochi's promoters.

The only avenue left open for the Russian GP now is if the RAF can prove that there was a 'force majeure' reason for it to miss the July 31 deadline.

A statement issued by the RAF said: "The application to the FIA for submitting the Russian Grand Prix to the 2014 Formula 1 calendar was not sent in proper time as JSC Omega (Promoter) didn't fulfil the necessary conditions.

"That is: [it] didn't sign a contract with the Russian Grand Prix organiser, didn't sign a deal for an application submission and also didn't pay a fee to the FIA for including an event on the FIA F1 calendar.

"RAF informs that it is ready to include the Russian Grand Prix on to the FIA calendar under force-majeure conditions, permissible by the FIA, as soon as the promoter fulfils all the necessary formalities."

One of the areas of dispute is of marshalling personnel at the Russian Grand Prix, with the RAF having started its own project with the FIA Institute, in partnership with Australia's CAMS, to prepare safety personnel.

It has made it clear that it wants support from the Russian GP promoters to fund this ongoing programme.

Sergey Ivanov, CEO of RAF, said: "The F1 grand prix of Sochi gave a huge boost to develop the system of staff preparation.

"Until the end of 2012, we received grants from the FIA to organise seminars as well as do other work. Now we need to continue that programme and broaden it, which requires additional funding for the RAF."

Other areas of dispute include the commercial and intellectual property rights to the grand prix, as well as the length of the contract between the RAF and the race promoters.

Valencia in talks to break F1 contract

Valencia's formula one foray is set to be officially folded, according to a media report.

Last week, we reported that - according to a draft 2014 calendar that is quietly doing the rounds - the Spanish port city will not host a grand prix next year.

That is despite earlier reports that Valencia and Barcelona have agreed to annually alternate a single Spanish grand prix from 2014 onwards.

Tickets for next year's Barcelona round have, however, already gone on sale, a May 11 date has been set, and El Mundo newspaper said the alternation contract was actually never signed.

Now, Diario Sport newspaper reports that the only negotiations between Bernie Ecclestone and Valencia president Alberto Fabra are about how much Valencia should pay for breaking its existing race contract.

Reportedly, F1's chief executive wants Valencia to pay the full EUR 33 million termination penalty, but Fabra "is in talks to soften" that maximum hit.

Diario Sport claims Valencia treasurer Juan Carlos Moragues Ferrer said recently that, amid the economic crisis, the government wanted to "meet our obligations without having to close schools or hospitals".

"In this context," wrote correspondent Laura Lopez Albiac, "it would be very difficult to explain to taxpayers that more money is being allocated for an extraordinary item such as F1."

Formula 1 - Raikkonen tests GP3 car at Barcelona circuit

Kimi Raikkonen got back on track a week ahead of his Formula One rivals when he completed 270km of testing in a GP3 car at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya on Friday.

Formula One, which ends an August shutdown at the Belgian Grand Prix next week, bans regular testing during the season but drivers can clock up as many miles as they want in cars used in other series.

Raikkonen, the 2007 world champion who is currently second in the standings for Lotus after 10 of 19 races, took part in the official GP3 test to help his friend Afa Heikkinen, who manages the Koiranen GP team.

GP3 is a rung below GP2, the recognised feeder series for Formula One, and the test was aimed at collecting data to improve the cars and allow more overtaking next season.

"I was curious to see how the car handled and it was actually fun to drive," Raikkonen told the official GP3 website (www.gp3series.com) after completing 58 laps - nearly an F1 race distance.

"The GP3/13 (car) is a very good tool for young drivers, especially when you have to learn about tyre management like we have in F1."

GP3 cars, with no power steering and engines producing a mere 400bhp, are a long way from Formula One but the track time will have helped the Finn limber up for Spa-Francorchamps.

Raikkonen, winner of the season-opener in Australia and now 38 points behind Red Bull's triple champion Sebastian Vettel, will be one of the favourites in Belgium after winning there four times previously.

"For me it is the greatest racing circuit in the world. It is my favourite place. I have liked the place since my first ever visit there in 2000 with Formula Renault," he said in a Lotus preview for the race.

"I don't know how it will suit our car this year. Last year we were not very strong there. I think we know the reasons and for sure our car is better this year," added the Finn, who will be chasing his 28th successive points finish.

Formula 1 - Red Bull end talks with Raikkonen, Ricciardo set to get seat

Daniel Ricciardo is now set to secure the second Red Bull Formula 1 seat for 2014, with talks between the team and Kimi Raikkonen having come to an end.

Amid growing speculation that Red Bull had decided to pick Ricciardo, Raikkonen's manager Steve Robertson told Autosport on Monday that the Finn was no longer a contender to line-up alongside Sebastian Vettel next year.

Robertson confirmed the news, which first appeared in Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat, that the former world champion's discussions with Red Bull had come to an end.

"It's true," said Robertson. "Kimi will not be driving for Red Bull in 2014. We held some talks, but a deal will not be happening."

Red Bull had openly admitted that its choice for Mark Webber's replacement was between Raikkonen and Ricciardo - despite being made aware in Hungary that Fernando Alonso could be available too.

Raikkonen had always been happy to stay at Lotus for 2014, but the prospect of racing for reigning champion Red Bull was given serious consideration.

The Finn's representatives opened negotiations with Red Bull, as the team weighed up whether to opt for Raikkonen's experience and guaranteed speed, or put its faith in a youngster like Ricciardo as a long term prospect.

Although Red Bull is insisting that it is not in a position yet to announce its 2014 drivers, Robertson's revelation that Raikkonen is now out of the running points to a Ricciardo deal being a formality.

An announcement about Red Bull's plans could be made as soon as this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, although the team may opt to wait for the following race in Italy.

Should Ricciardo be confirmed, he will move up to Red Bull's main team after two full seasons with its junior Toro Rosso outfit. He also competed in 11 races for HRT in 2011.

The collapse of the Red Bull talks means that Raikkonen's best option to remain in competitive machinery in 2014 is to finalise a fresh deal with Lotus.

But such a deal is not a formality, amid questions about the financial health of the team, with Raikkonen having been paid late on some occasions.

Robertson said that Lotus was just one possibility for Raikkonen as talks continued with a number of teams.

"We are pretty confident that Kimi will be in F1 next year," he explained. "There are options - and that is plural - out there and I will continue to talk to teams. I am hopeful we will sort something out in the not too distant future."

Suzuka to host Japanese Grand Prix to 2018

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Suzuka will continue to host the Japanese Grand Prix until 2018, organisers said on Friday after reaching a deal with Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

Hiroshi Soda, president of the Mobilityland Corporation that runs the Honda-owned circuit, said in a statement that a formal contract had been signed after a basic agreement was reached in March.

He thanked Ecclestone for "showing us a great deal of understanding in the process".

Honda are returning to Formula One in 2015 as engine partners to McLaren after quitting the sport at the end of the 2008 season.

Toyota, whose Fuji track hosted the Japanese Grand Prix in 2007 and 2008, pulled out of Formula One at the end of 2009 while tyre supplier Bridgestone quit a year later.

There is currently no Japanese driver in the sport after Kamui Kobayashi, the country's most successful grand prix racer, lost his seat at Sauber last year.

"It has been agreed that the Formula One Grand Prix will be hosted at Suzuka Circuit until 2018," said Ecclestone in Friday's statement issued during the Belgian Grand Prix.

"It is also great to see Honda back in Formula One in 2015. I am sure that the Japanese Grand Prix will attract greater attention than ever."

Pirelli calm tire fears after Spa punctures

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium (Reuters) - Pirelli calmed renewed fears about their Formula One tires on Friday after triple world champion Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso suffered punctures in second practice at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Red Bull's Vettel was fastest in the dry session but the sight of him nursing his stricken car back to the pits at slow speed with strips of right rear tire buckling and flailing was more of a talking point.

Alonso had a rear right puncture too, also at around turn 14, at the end of the session.

"I don't think it's a similar problem to what we saw in Silverstone, maybe more of a random set of circumstances, but all the same it needs careful analysis." said the Spaniard who was quickest in the morning.

Pirelli had to strengthen their tires after a spate of blowouts at the British Grand Prix in June triggered safety fears and threw the sport into crisis.

Their motorsport head Paul Hembery assured reporters that Friday's incident was completely different, however, and due to "external sources" - such as debris - rather than anything structural.

"It looks on the Red Bull as though something has been rubbing on the surface and then has just cut through," he said.

"And on the Ferrari there are two quite clear holes through the top of the tread. So we have to go and look at the track later to see what is between turns 13 and 15."

Last month's Hungarian Grand Prix, the last race before the summer break, was free of tire-related incidents but the Hungaroring is one of the slowest circuits while Spa is the second fastest track with heavy loads on the tires.

Any tire failure or track issue, with cars racing on full throttle for long stretches, could be catastrophic.

"There is clearly something but I cannot tell you what it is," said Hembery. "It is from external sources.

"It is a worry for the sport because we have to go out and find what it is. We will try our very best to identify it and give us an indication of what is causing it."

Vettel had earlier lapped with a best time of one minute 49.331 seconds with the sun coming out after a damp start to the day in the Ardennes forests where the weather is notoriously capricious.

The championship leader's time looked ominous, 0.059 quicker than second-placed team mate Mark Webber and comfortably clear of Frenchman Romain Grosjean in the Lotus with a time of 1:50.149.

Formula 1 pitstop rules to toughen up from Singapore Grand Prix

Formula 1 teams will be required to fit improved wheel retention systems from the Singapore Grand Prix in a bid to improve pitlane safety, AUTOSPORT has learned.

Amid an increased focus on pitstop safety after an FOM cameraman was injured when he was hit by a loose wheel at the German GP, the FIA has requested that teams change their designs after the Italian GP.

F1's regulations already demand that teams must fit wheel retention devices - but there has been no stipulation on the exact design of these.

Article 14.7 of the technical regulations states simply: "All cars, whilst under their own power, must be fitted with devices which will retain the wheel fastener in the event of it coming loose."

The German GP incident, where a wheel came off Mark Webber's Red Bull car after it had not been attached properly at a stop, highlighted a weakness with the current retention systems.

The FIA, which completed a detailed investigation into wheel systems after the Nurburgring, concluded that the current single retention concept was only useful in incidents when the wheel came loose from a fully-fitted position.

DUAL SYSTEMS NOW COMPULSORY

In a bid to prevent wheels being able to fly off on occasions when they have not been fully fitted, the FIA has demanded that from the Singapore GP teams will have to fit dual stage wheel retention systems.

The first retention device will retain the wheel if it works loose from a fully fitted position.

A second device will now also retain the wheel in the event that it works loose having only just been engaged on the axle thread – as would happen if the nut is cross-threaded during a pitstop and the car accidentally released.

The rule will be enforced by the FIA interpreting that teams only comply with article 14.7 if there are dual retention systems in place.

Teams were informed of the changes during F1's summer break and several outfits trialled the new design during the Belgian GP weekend.

McLaren sporting director Sam Michael said: "We tried it on the car on Friday [in Belgium] and we will probably put it on the car for Friday at Monza as well.

"It is a little bit different and, when you are operating with pitstops around two seconds in length, the most marginal things can make a big difference.

"Just a tiny change to the design can really disturb the mechanics and their whole routine."

Formula 1 - Ricciardo lands Red Bull seat for 2014

Toro Rosso driver Daniel Ricciardo will partner triple world champion Sebastian Vettel in 2014 after Red Bull announced the Australian as their new driver.

The 24-year-old will replace fellow countryman Mark Webber who is leaving Formula One to race for Porsche's Le Mans programme.

“Since joining F1 in 2011, I hoped this would happen and over time the belief in me has grown; I had some good results and Red Bull has decided that this is it, so it's a good time,” he told the official team website.

“Next year I’ll be with a Championship-winning team, arguably the best team, and will be expected to deliver.”

Mexico on 21-race draft 2014 Formula 1 calendar, no New Jersey slot

Formula 1 is set for a 21-race calendar next year, including the return of Mexico but no New Jersey race, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

A first draft of the 2014 provisional calendar has been distributed to teams ahead of this weekend's Italian Grand Prix.

Although the 2014 schedule needs to be approved at a meeting of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council that takes place in Croatia on September 26-28, teams are bracing themselves for F1's longest ever season.

An early version of the schedule, which has been seen by AUTOSPORT, does not include the proposed event in New Jersey that F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone had hoped to include.

However, it will feature events in Russia and Mexico, providing the circuits are ready in time.

As has been widely expected, the season will start in Australia on March 16 for the traditional double-header with Malaysia.

The Korean Grand Prix has been moved from the end of season run of flyaway events to become the fourth race of the campaign, taking place in the week after the Chinese GP.

However, the event is likely to only be made official subject to the completion of a contract with Formula One Management.

The returning Austrian GP is pencilled in for June 22, earlier than the July 6 date that it was originally scheduled for.

The new Russian GP at Sochi will become a back-to-back with Abu Dhabi, while the Mexican GP is being twinned with the USA GP at Austin.

The Spanish GP is set to take place at Barcelona, with Valencia not making it back on to the schedule, while the German GP will return to Hockenheim.
