Bernie Ecclestone confirms Formula 1 will stick to 19 races in 2013

Formula 1 will stick to 19 races this season after failing to find a replacement for New Jersey, supremo Bernie Ecclestone says.

Ecclestone and the FIA had reshuffled the calendar in a bid to slot in a 20th race on July 21, but despite talks with Turkey, Austria and Portugal no deal could be reached.

Although there remains time to sort out an extra event, Ecclestone said on Tuesday that he was now resigned to not holding a 20th race.

"The calendar has been formed already, it's too late," he told Dubai's The National newspaper at an announcement for a new five-year global sponsorship deal between F1 and Emirates airline.

He added: " disappointed that it didn't happen before; we can't suddenly slot it in."

F1's tie-up with Emirates has prompted talk that Dubai could be in the running to hold a race, but Ecclestone has ruled that out because the Middle East is already well represented with Abu Dhabi and Bahrain.

"We support races that we think are good for F1, wherever they may be," he said.

"We have a restriction for 20 races and we already have two in this area, so it would be difficult to pop another one in."

Bernie Ecclestone says it's too late to arrange a 20th grand prix in 2013 ©

Bernie Ecclestone says he is "very impressed" with the ongoing work at Sochi ahead of its hosting of the 2014 Russian Grand Prix.

The race will take place next year after Sochi hosts the 2014 Winter Olympics, with the track using part of the Olympic Park access roads.

Having visited the city along with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin this week, Ecclestone said he was happy with the progress being made on the facilities.

"Everything seems very good," Ecclestone told The National. "[Putin] seems delighted with the Olympics and the Formula One. It was good. I was very impressed with what they have done."

Ecclestone also confirmed there is likely to be 19 races in 2013 after admitting it is too late to arrange a 20th race.

"The calendar has been formed already, it's too late," Ecclestone said before adding he was "disappointed that it didn't happen before; we can't suddenly slot it in".

The 2013 calendar does have a slot for an unconfirmed European race on July 21, but planned hosts Turkey failed to produce the necessary funding to pay the race fee.

Defunct F1 team HRT sells cars to scrap dealer

MADRID (AP) -Five cars from the now defunct Formula One team HRT have been bought by a Spanish company specialized

in used racing parts.

Teo Martin, the owner of the company, told Europa Press news agency that he had purchased the cars from HRT with plans to resell them to interested buyers.

HRT folded at the end of last season for financial reasons, leaving the grid with only 11 teams this year. The Spanish team did not score a point in its three seasons on the circuit.

This season begins with the Australian Grand Prix on March 17 following two sets of preseason tests in Barcelona.

Formula 1 - Sutil returns to race for Force India in 2013 Adrian Sutil will return to Formula One and Force India after the team

announced that he will again partner Briton Paul Di Resta in 2013.

The German was dropped by the team in 2011 after four years with the squad.

He has a conviction for grievous bodily harm following a nightclub brawl in Shanghai after the 2011 Chinese Grand Prix.

Sutil's 18-month jail sentence was suspended and he was also fined

200,000 euros for the incident that left Eric Lux, then chief executive

of Renault F1 (now Lotus) owners Genii Capital, needing stitches for a

neck wound caused by a champagne glass.

“I’m delighted to be back in Formula One, especially with a team I know so well," said Sutil.

"I’m very happy and I want to thank Sahara Force India for giving me a second chance.

Bianchi replaces Razia at Marussia

Jules Bianchi has been handed a race seat at Marussia after the team terminated Luiz Razia's contract.

Razia was only named one of Marussia's drivers at the opening pre-season test at Jerez, but after completing two days of running he didn't appear for the team at the second test in Barcelona last week amid rumours of issues with his funding. It appears those issues have not been resolved and the team has now turned to Bianchi, who this week lost out on a drive with Force India.

"We're pleased to announce that we've appointed Jules Bianchi to a race seat," the team announced on Twitter. "This follows the termination of our contract with Luiz Razia."
