Team Canada at Sochi 2014

Dan Church stunningly resigns from the Canadian women's hockey coaching post, citing "personal reasons" and leadership issues. Worry that former Calgary Dinos coach Danielle Goyette, though a very smart player and a potential international coach, might be a bit over her head right now thrown at the Olympic cauldron.

Hey intoronto, what will it take in the last race for Canada to qualify a complete luge team?

As in maximum quota in each event? If so, its not possible as there is only one doubles,

Or do you mean one in each event? If so then 3 men, 3 women and 1 doubles sled (and the relay) have all qualified. There won't be anything that brings them out of qualification.

There is still one race left I though, so points are still available for qualification no? Because before the last race I was sure Canada had only provisionally 1 man.

Yes there is one race, but it will not affect the standings for Canada. The three men (Edney, Malyk and Fennell) are all qualified. However there is a slight risk if they don't finish/participate that they will be bumped (but that will not happen).

Right now our team sizes look like this;

Alpine: 12 athletes

Biathlon: 8 athletes (Canada qualified 10 but will only send 8 according to this source)

Bobsleigh: 16 athletes

Cross Country: 16 athletes

Curling: 10 athletes (the maximum)

Figure Skating: 17 athletes

Freestyle Skiing: 26 athletes (the maximum)

Hockey: 46 athletes (the maximum)

Luge: 8 athletes

Short track: 10 athletes (the maximum)

Skeleton: 6 athletes (the maximum)

Ski Jumping: 5 athletes

Speed Skating: 18 athletes

Snowboarding: 26 athletes (the maximum),This FIS allows a maximum of 24, but its recent published list has 26 for Canada.

Only sport without Canadian representation will be Nordic Combined.

So shaping up to be about 224 athletes in Sochi for Canada. Largest ever team.

Luge and Bobsleigh teams announced.

Luge:

Men: Samual Edney, John Fennel, Mitchel Malyk

Women: Alex Gough, Kimberly McRae

Doubles: Justin Snith, Tristan Walker

*Canada declined a quota in the women's event.

Bobsleigh:

Men: Lyndon Rush, David Bissett, Lascelles Brown, Jesse Lumsden, Justin Kripps, Chris Spring, Bryan Barnett, Cody Sorensen, Ben Coakwell, James McNaughton, Tim Randall and Graeme Rinholm

Women: Kaillie Humphries, Heather Moyse, Jennifer Ciochetti and Chelsea Valois

My bad the last women's spot is down to a race off.

Was going to say, declining a women's quota would have been very strange. Canada has three very good young women's lugers behind Gough.

Anyway, glad to see the Luge team is so young. Its quite conceivable that everyone on the team will be back in 2018. Fennel and Malyk especially have been doing very well for teenagers.

Guillaume Bastille appealed the selection of Francois Hamelin to the Short Track team. The arbitrator appears to believe Speed Skating Canada might have improperly selected the younger Hamelin brother.

This might get quite ugly :/

Interesting. I just read a report in French and it says Bastille has better results (more world cup podiums etc.) but Hamelin has the experience. Hamelin's father is in position of power on Speed Skating Canada but won't be a part of the jury that decides.

According to FIS Canada has 20 spots in Cross-country, are we refusing 4?

And in skeleton it looks like only two men, Russia, USA and Germany getting the 3

Latest FIS allocation had Canada with 16. This season so far has been dismal for Canada.

Canada's skeleton team almost set:

Men: Eric Neilson and John Fairbairn

Women: Mellisa Hollingsworth and Sarah Reid

Two additional skeletoners--one each in men and women--are yet to be announced. Experienced, yes. Unlikely Russell, Manitoba's Jon Montgomery will join them to qualify to defend his Vancouver gold. He himself says this, but he could if he win the final four of the intercontinental circuit races.

Yea and I wouldn't be surprised to see it drop. Skeleton is supposed to be 5 but 6 were announced today. I wonder if that was premature or in fsct they clinched 3. There is 3 world cups left.
