Armenia at Istanbul 2020?

Recommended Posts

There was quite a fair bit of discussion of how Israel would be welcomed to the Qatar FIFA World Cup/Doha 2016-20 Olympics - so I am interested in how people think the Armenians would handle an Istanbul Games.

I haven't seen any concerted online effort to discredit the bid due to the genocide of 1915-1923. Well not as visible a campaign anyway as previous bid cycles has produced.

With Armenia not having an IOC member at the moment will it be a non event?

Considering the outrage at Beijing's bid in 1993 and 2001 after the Tiananmen Square 'incident' I am surprised people haven't been throwing stats around about the genocide.

Has it been too long? I suppose it falls into the same category as Japan and their World War 2 atrocities and Spain's fascist terror purges.

Non-event, puppy. Not any more explosive than Russia and the Checnyans (sp?). It's just an issue of resentment but Turkey has become such a major player in the region (and Armenia isn't) that I think it's a lost cause for the Armenians. That's my amateur view of it.

...Likewise, Studied it at school as part of history. There has been and so much more worse atrocities out there since. (I think Barcelona '92 was used as part of the healing process for Spain?) Different world now, Turkey wants to be seen as a 'ballancing' power in the region.

Teams from these countries Turkey Cyprus Armenia...have all played professional football and basketball matches against each other...Even with hooligans on both sides..the matches have gone ahead..with some crowd trouble of course...At the Olympics, where hooligan spectators arent common..I dont see an issue.

Well you have answered my question. You may not recall however back in 1993 and 1997 there was a lot of anti-Turkish rhetoric being flung around regarding Armenia and teh Istanbul bids for 2000/2004 and wondered why it has not been so vocal this time around.

I am glad it hasn't come up yet and I am glad that while the wound still festers for the most part both sides have opted to move on.

Has Turkey officially apologised or made any repatriations to Armenia btw?

Turkey did apologize I think but didn't call it a genocide.

Actually the Australian government co-sponsored a UN motion against Armenia which was vetoed. Do some research.

Germany is still pilorised for their genocide/holocaust.

Even though it was 100 years ago the wound is still fresh in the Armenian mindset. As such even a token "sorry" helps mend bridges, ya know. Anyhow according to intoronto a conditional apology has been given.

No need to get upset. My Government has apologised for their earlier misdeed to the indigenous of Australia. It is a right of passage to acknowledge where you have erred and move on.

The Turkish Government will never acknowledge or apologize for what happened because of two reasons, 1) It would put Turkey in a position where they could be held liable for financial reparations and 2) the ethnic cleansing of Eastern Turkey could be legally viewed as a land grab and put Turkey in the position of potentially having to return lands to Armenia that were cleansed. Which is a sizable chunk of Turkish territory.

im sorry but i cant understand st. first it was ottoman empire and there was a war in the region. why another country is responsible for that?

secondly just thinking loud, if there was a total genocide how still there are armenians living under the turkish flag? also in history there are huntings like indians in america and middle american empires totally destroyed arent they genocide? for me destroying a whole 3 civilizations in americas with all citizens by spanish is the biggest man hunt ever. i never accuse span for this or anybody? or invading ıraq kills millions

i cant accept a word genocide but millions killed in both sides in that war thats true. and a sad page in human history
