Cody1985
The only thing Mr. Bach speaks about 2024 is the fact that he want to be IOC President in September 2013 ! If he wins, some IOC members say it clear that Germany will not get 2 gifts, what means the 2022 WOG will not be held in Munich. For me, it is not understandable why this should be a reason, because in Samaranch times it puches Barcelona for 1992, because of the good connection (corruption?) IMO Germany should do EVERYTHING to get the 2022 WOG, because : 1. All possible favorites are out: Switzerland, No support in Oslo, US won't bid ... And a Lwiw or Zakopane bid has no chance against Munich. And there is no other european City that could beat Munich now. 2. The Investments for the WOG are much less than OSG in times of financial crisis, Munich/Garmisch-Partenkirchen has nearly all venues and a strong infrastucture 3. The Germans have more chances for Gold in Winter Olympics as in Summer, same like Canada 4. It is our time to shine after 82 years since GAP 1936 ! Cody1985
And I forgot : In the 2018 election, Munich gets 25 votes ! That's a lot when you considering that there was never a doubt that PyeongChang will get the Games !
runningrings
How is Bach getting IOC presidency a "gift" to Germans? Has he stated this? I still fail to see why Germany can't bid during a Bach presidency. Surely there are enough anti-corruption measures in place to keep watch. Gangwon
http://www.insidethegames.biz/olympics/winter-olympics/2022/1013174-germany-bid-for-2022-winter-olympics-moves-closer-following-swiss-exit According to this article, Bavaria will have a local referendum on whether to bid for 2022, on November 10? That's just 4 days before the deadline to apply. Seems a little late, but it might be good timing as it's one day after the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall? What German won't feel extra patriotic on the day after such an important anniversary, and wouldn't want to support a feel-good event like the Winter Olympics? Sir Rols
If Munich does bid for 2022, what lengths does Paris go to prevent a Munich win? I'd have thought the French would be more than happy to have Berlin 2024 out of their way in that case.
runningrings
Even if Istanbul gets 2020, I don't think it would be entirely impossible to see Munich and Paris following it. They would be the last European Games until at least 2034, but we've seen it before with Albertville/Barcelona/Lillehammer.

What German won't feel extra patriotic on the day after such an important anniversary, and wouldn't want to support a feel-good event like the Winter Olympics? The anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall doesn't play a big role for most Germans - it doesn't inspire significant patriotic feelings anymore, not after 24 years. And that's particularly the case for the citizens of former West Germany, including the Bavarians. So I don't expect any "anniversary effect" for the referendum. Nevertheless, I expect that a majority will vote in favour of a 2022 bid.

Westfale
Thanks for clarifying. Why are they leaving the referendum so late then? Because the Bavarians will elect a new parliament on September, 15th and the Germans will elect a new parliament (Bundestag) on September, 22nd. Although the two biggest parties in Germany will support a new bid, it is possible, that the Greens will become a member of a coalition government after the elections in Bavaria and for the Bundestag. The Greens were against Munichs bid 2018 and I dont see them supporting a new bid for Winter Games.
George_D
Hamburg Pulls Back From 2024 Summer Olympic Bid Wednesday, November 13, 2013 9:17am EST GB Staff Hamburg decided Tuesday to pull back on a possible bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, following a clear "no" in a referendum held on Munich's bid for the 2022 Winter Games. Guenter Ploss, President of the Hamburg sports federation HSB, told the Hamburger Abendblatt Daily "it would be careless to go forward with this now". He said local officials must first analyze what went wrong in Munich before considering submitting a bid. Michael Neumann, a spokesman for the local politician responsible for sport said, "applying for the Olympics is a marathon, not a sprint. Hamburg has the potential to host any major event. We want to be ready by at least the end of the decade to successfully bid for national and international events". Ploss added that important questions must be answered. There has to be a realistic chance for the bid to succeed; politicians and residents should support the bid and the costs of the spectacle should be clarified ahead of time. He said, "the Games in London cost 12 billion Euros ($16 billion). You have to say beforehand who will pay that in the end". Hamburg bid to become Germany's candidate for the 2012 Olympics but lost to Leipzig which then lost to London.
StefanMUC
Yeah well, I think a Germany 3024 thread is more realistic at this stage.
