Rob Waddell has been named at New Zealand's Chef De Mission at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Outstanding New Zealand athlete and Olympian Rob Waddell has been named Chef de Mission for the New Zealand Summer Olympic and Commonwealth Games Teams.
A two-time World Rowing Champion and Olympic gold medal winner (men’s single sculls Sydney 2000), Waddell will bring an in-depth understanding of high performance sport to the role. He has a string of top New Zealand sporting honours to his name and is currently a senior member of Emirates Team New Zealand, vice-chair (former chair) of the Home of Cycling Trust and co-owner of a family business.

Secretary General of the New Zealand Olympic Committee Kereyn Smith is delighted to have appointed Waddell to this leadership role. “Rob has what it takes to make sure the environment is right for athletes to achieve at Olympic Games. He knows sport and the needs of elite athletes, is highly respected and sets a clear standard of excellence. He also has as strong focus on the benefits of sport to the community. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the team.”

Waddell said his appointment to the Chef de Mission role was a once in a lifetime opportunity. “It’s a unique position and I’m honoured to have been appointed, he said. “We’ve just come off the back of our most successful Olympic Games ever and I’m determined that continues.”

He felt that his own Olympic experience will be critical in his new role. “I’ve been to three Olympic Games and experienced them not just as a successful gold medal winner but also as a wide-eyed first-timer and again as an athlete struggling to meet expectations. That broad perspective will help better understand our top athletes.”
High Performance Sport CEO Alex Baumann said he had absolute confidence in Waddell’s ability to deliver. “Rob has a depth of understanding and experience across high performance sport. He’s known for his commitment to excellence and we look forward to a strong partnership with him as we plan for Rio 2016.”

Grant Dalton, CEO of Emirates Team New Zealand, congratulated Waddell.
“We’re delighted for Rob. He is an outstanding individual and is ideally suited to the position. He commands respect and is a brilliant team player.”

Waddell’s role with the New Zealand Olympic Team will not impact on existing Emirates Team New Zealand commitments.
Waddell was selected for the Chef de Mission role by a panel comprising Olympic athletes, an Olympic coach as well as representatives of the New Zealand Olympic Committee and HPSNZ. They were Mike Stanley, President NZOC, Kereyn Smith, Secretary General NZOC, Alex Bauman, CEO HPSNZ, Chantal Brunner, Olympian and New Zealand Athletes’ Commission representative, Mark Hager, Olympian and Coach (Women’s Black Sticks) and Jake Wilkins, Team Services Director, NZOC.

As Chef de Mission, Waddell will lead the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games teams. He will be responsible for setting standards of excellence, overseeing the planning and preparation of the games management teams and ensuring the athletes and their NSOs have what they need to achieve within the complex Olympic and Commonwealth Games environments.

Waddell will be New Zealand’s 18th Chef de Mission for the Summer Olympic Games. Sir Arthur Porritt (1924 Paris and 1936 Berlin) was New Zealand’s first Chef de Mission.

A popular choice and I am sure he will do an excellent job!

The New Zealand campaign seems to have launched at this 1 year to go mark.

With it, they've released the campaign branding under the *be the inspiration* tagline.

They've also released a nice wee video

The first New Zealand athletes are about to compete against the world number 1 US womens football team. It will be tough for the womens team against the world number 1! But this is New Zealand's biggest Olympic team with 199 competitors!

The first New Zealand athletes competed this morning against the USA (NZT) in women's football. New Zealand went down 2-0 to the world number 1 Americans. A tough first up effort but they will be better for it. Their next game is against Columbia on day 1 of competition. Columbia lost 4-0 to France.

OK now I'm starting to crank up into Positive Olympic mode...more so now that the Aussie rowing team is rubbing it in that their base in only five minutes away from the rowing venue...giving them more preparation time instead of having to travel 35mins as the Kiwis do. RNZ dropped the oar there...

Doesn't quite feel like London but hey we are here already.

Choppy conditions out on the rowing course... But at least you get to see some oarsmanship.

NZ getting the job done for the road ahead...early days yet.

A tough day at the rowing with choppy conditions but NZ has done well winning several heats. The Dressage of the 3 day event is underway as well and the NZ Team is sitting in 5th place. In the Womens 7s two wins for NZ has them looking good at the end of the first day!

Men's Hockey beaten 2-1 by Australia...but could've been a draw. Australia using a video review to deny NZ a critical last quarter goal. For a team riding on another's ticket...a good effort, but they will need to beat Great Britain tomorrow to stay in it.

Swimming: some minor PBs but no qualifyings...yet.

A great result for the womens football team. Only two rowing crews in action today. The womens hockey team start against Korea today with the sevens continuing as well. Loren Boyle will be out in the 400m freestyle. It will be interesting to see how her form is after her illness before her favoured 800m event.

A SILVER medal for New Zealand in the womens trap shooting competition. Natalie Rooney won New Zealand's second ever shooting medal and the first since 1968! A fantastic result for New Zealand to kick off the medals!

Women's Sevens have scraped through to the Semi Finals with a one try 5-0 win over USA. Although USA were strong, NZ wasn't really convincing.

They'll take on Great Britain while Australia will take on Canada tomorrow.

Great Britain will be a very tough effort to beat and discipline needs to move up a level...good luck.

They did enough and were strong on defence. Remember Australia actually drew 12-12 with the USA in pool play! The USA really stepped up as the competition progressed.

Equestrian team all done out on the Cross Country for the day and in a very good position for a medal if all goes well tomorrow.

Germany beat Blacksticks Women's Hockey 2-1. Not really panic material yet.

Out on the water...Rowing and kayaking getting the job done in the hunt for medals. A great effort with a couple of boat crews doing double duty after yesterday's cancellation of racing.

Australia women's Sevens in the Gold final...and now its the turn of New Zealand v Great Britain to see who will meet them.

Great Britain brain explosion!!

Two yellow cards right on half time. NZ exploiting!

15-7

And GB were looking good.

NZ now pulling away taking advantage of a five girl GB side.

Women's Seven final for New Zealand. Luck on their side as well with a massive collapse in discipline by GB just before half time. Two yellow cards. Annoying to see no successful conversions of NZs five tries. Will be essential in three and a half hours time in the Gold final.

NZ 25 -GB 7
