JO2024
Well, it just all looks very Athens 2004. I suppose he was unispired on this one. As much as I loved that Klepsydia bit on Athens 2004 OC, the reuse here is a bit disppointing....
yoshi
That is a very interesting (and weird) way to light a flame Clepsydra time!
Olympian2004
Those mythological and historical scenes, the way the performers move: It really looks as if they have recycled all the floats from Athens with just minor changes in the props and costumes
kevzz
Cos they are using the same creative director, dimitris papaioannou for this opening ceremony too. Wished he hasnt recycle this parade from athens
JO2024
At least we know what to expect from his next Opening Ceremony (if he ever does another one).
kevzz
Im surprised he allowed it to be recycled.
Daze
Even this Red Pomegranate reminds at Athens. Won´t be surprised if it opens up and transform into other forms.
JO2024
Ahah I agree, it really feels like Athens 2004²
Olympian2004
And there's the Azerbaijani version of the Cycladic head, with the same kind of stirring classical music. Only that this time it's pink and balloons are released from the pieces.
Daze
Does anyone knows which flag they will use instead of the Olympic Flag?
JO2024
It DID open!! Ahahah Oh I just noticed Thomas Bach!
Anthony
Creative section to come after the parade?
kevzz
Quite cool though, the pomegranate seeds float into the air. But yes, reminiscent of the floating sculpture in Athens. That's it for the cultural programme? Why Greece comes in first? Is the European Games has anything to do with the Olympics? Are they under IOC? yoshi
Armenia entering not awkward at all.
Olympian2004
They are under the EOC, the European Olympic Committees. Armenia entering not awkward at all. Did the audience boo? Sadly, sports channel Sport 1 which is broadcasting the European Games here in Germany has cut away to a looooooong commercial break soon after the parade started.
JO2024
Wow, the crowd cheering for France!
yoshi
I didn't notice any. Those are the London placards aren't they - the Johnson font is recognisable to any Brit, anywhere.
Olympian2004
I can't judge it - Sport 1 has cut to yet another commercial break, just a few minutes after the last one. This isn't America, folks!
yoshi
Watch on Youtube Oly - here's the link: No adverts here

Olympian2004
Oh, thanks! I didn't expect the YouTube stream to run in my country, I expected geo-blocking. But it works! Nice!
JO2024
Poutine is there... Does anyone know who are the "officials" attending this ceremony?
Olympian2004
I must say that despite the recycling of some elements, this ceremony has quite an Olympic feel. Now I'm curious whether the Games themselves can keep that level, too. But Azerbaijan seems to pull all the stops here. Maybe that's good for a change, even if Azerbaijan is an autocratic country longing for prestige and attention, but it could bring the European Games on track right from the start, as opposed to a lukewarm and cheapish "Oh, well, yet another edition of multisports events - again" event. It does feel like an Olympic Games. Unlike Commonwealth Games, they always feel sub-par to the real thing.
