Rowing opts out of 2015 European Games program

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) The governing body of rowing has rejected an invitation to join the inaugural European Games program in 2015.

The rowing body, known as FISA, says it made an "extensive investigation" in host country Azerbaijan but found inadequate training facilities.

The European Games is a combined continental championships project by the European Olympic Committees Association, though some major sports like athletics and swimming are uncertain about joining.

FISA says its officials found problems in Mingechevir last month, "including the flow in the river, insufficient accommodation and its position for international access, 300 kilometres (186 miles) from Baku."

FISA says a second option on the capital city's outskirts could not be completed before the June 2015 event.

FISA says "there are good prospects" for rowing to join in 2019.

Baku awarded 2017 Islamic Solidarity GamesJuly 26 - Baku has secured another top event to add to its portfolio after being awarded the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, it has been announced.

Azerbaijan's capital was awarded the event at the General Assembly of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) in Jeddah.

The decision to award Baku the event means that the city will be able to build upon the European Games, which it is hosting in 2015.

...

It will be the third occasion that Islamic Solidarity Games has been held since its debut at Mecca in Saudi Arabia in 2005.

It was subsequently due to be held in Tehran in 2009 but was, first, rescheduled for a year later and, then, finally cancelled following a dispute which arose between Iran and the Arab World over the use of the term Persian Gulf in logos for the Games.

The Games are due to take place this year in South Sumatra, Indonesia, between September 22 and October 1, with 2,500 athletes and officials from nearly 30 countries expected to take part.

...

A successful hosting of the Games would help Baku achieve its long-term ambition of hosting the Olympics and Paralympics.

Following unsuccessful campaigns for 2016 and 2020, the city is expected to bid again for 2024.

Baku is also bidding for the 2019 Summer Universiade

European Games in Baku to include acrobatics and aerobics

October 2 - Acrobatics and aerobics are to appear on the programme at the inaugural European Games in Baku in 2015, it has been revealed.

The announcement follows discussions between the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) President Georges Guelzec and Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan's Minister for Youth and Sport, as well as Jim Scheer, chief operating officer for Baku 2015.

Both disciplines of the sport are governed by the World Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

Acrobatics is a competitive gymnastic discipline where partnerships of gymnasts work together and perform routines consisting of acrobatic moves, dance and tumbling, set to music.

Its history as a competitive sport dates back to the 1930s, when it was popular in the Soviet Union, and the first World Championships were held in 1974.

Aerobics is the ability to perform continuously complex and high-intensity movement patterns to music - which originates from traditional aerobics - with a high degree of perfectly executed elements of difficulty.

The sport featured in the World Games at Lahti in 1997 and the UEG have staged a biennial European Championships since 1999.

There is also a World Championships, which was held in Sofia last year, when Spain finished top of the medals table with three golds, ahead of Romania.

Aerobic_gymnastics.jpgAerobic gymnastics, a sport which owes its roots to the fitness craze of the 1970s, is set to appear on the programme at the 2015 European Games in Baku

Acrobatics will consist of mixed pairs while aerobics will feature the women's group.

For acrobatics inclusion in the Games represents a major step forward in their long campaign to be included in the Olympics.

About the Baku 2015 logo

Conceived by 35 year-old Azerbaijani Adam Yunisov, the Baku 2015 logo brings together five core elements that have shaped the host country's ancient and contemporary culture and aspirations:

  • Carpet: Added to UNESCO's 'Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity' in 2010, Azerbaijani carpet weaving is a family tradition transferred orally and through practice among the country's many carpet-making regions. This element of the logo reflects the importance of cultural heritage, diversity and creative expression, principles intrinsic to the Baku 2015 plans.
  • Flame: Azerbaijan is known as the 'Land of Fire'. Baku's modern LED-covered Flame Towers, which display the movement of a fire visible city-wide, and Yanar Dag, a natural gas fire which blazes at dusk, attract tourists from around the world, with visitor figures up three times in the past decade. The element represents Baku's burning ambition to host Europe's first ever European Games.
  • Wave: At 28 meters below sea level, Baku is the lowest-lying national capital in the world. It is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, which projects into the Caspian Sea, also known as the world's largest lake. Here Baku Port is the largest sea port, dating back to 1902. Today the capital of Azerbaijan's unique geographic location continues to drive its economic, social and cultural development. This element symbolises the dynamic growth of the city on an east-west axis along the shores of the Caspian Sea, and the new wave concept for a European Games that will shape the future of sport on the continent.
  • Simurgh: A benevolent, mythical flying creature, the Simurgh is considered to represent the union between the Earth and the Sky, serving as mediator and messenger between the two. The element symbolises the connection that Azerbaijani people have with the natural environment, along with their warmth and hospitality that will welcome athletes, fans and officials in 2015.
  • Pomegranate: Famous in Azerbaijani food and heritage, the pomegranate has long symbolised fertility and abundance. This fifth element of the logo represents the ambition of Baku 2015 to bring together people from across Europe in a celebration of sport and to create a legacy for future generations.

Can't help but think of Al Jazeera when I see this logo. It's clever, just don't think it works that well as a Games mark. See, I think this is a good example of where it is probably more pleasing to the traditional Olympic logo lovers , certainly it would win over Sochi in many peoples eyes, but where I'd have to say it's a far more flimsy logo than London or Sochi.

What a strange little logo. Not sure I necessarily dislike it, but it's an odd little thing.

Oh, certainly. This is a very fiddly little design which doesn't have the impact or confidence in its message those designs have.

500daystobakugames.jpg

The 500-day countdown to the opening ceremony of the first European Games in Baku (Baku Games 2015) has begun.

Organisers of the event have promised they are on target to host a spectacular festival of sport.

Baku Games 2015, to start on June 12, will involve around 6,000 competitors across 19 sports, including new formats and disciplines featured for the first time at a major European sports event.

The list of sports includes Aquatics, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball 3x3, Beach soccer, Boxing, Canoe Sprint, Cycling, Fencing, Gymnastics, Judo, Karate, Shooting, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Volleyball, and Wrestling.

The European Games in Baku next year will be the fulfillment of a long-held aspiration by the European Olympic Committees to stage a major, pan-continental, multi-sport event for the Olympic nations and athletes of Europe.

Baku Games organizers will begin sending sports qualification information to the 49 National Olympic Committees of Europe that will participate in the Baku 2015 Games.

Organisers also announced that no fewer than seven sports on the Baku Games competition programme will use the Games as a qualifying platform for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, including Cycling, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon and Beach Volleyball. Other Baku 2015 sports may also be added to the Olympic qualification list.

Senior International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and president of the European Olympic Committees, Patrick Hickey, said Baku is well placed to deliver a top-level sporting competition at the Games next year.

"I wish Baku well as it enters the final 500 days of Games preparations, and I am confident that Baku will stage a high quality sporting event that will make Europe proud. We congratulate everyone involved in Baku 2015 for reaching this important milestone, and for the continued progress in preparing to stage a spectacular sporting event and experience for the athletes and nations of Europe," he said.
