gotosy Posted July 15, 2013 Report Share Posted July 15, 2013 Rowing opts out of 2015 European Games program LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) The governing body of rowing has rejected an invitation to join the inaugural European Games program in 2015.The rowing body, known as FISA, says it made an "extensive investigation" in host country Azerbaijan but found inadequate training facilities.The European Games is a combined continental championships project by the European Olympic Committees Association, though some major sports like athletics and swimming are uncertain about joining.FISA says its officials found problems in Mingechevir last month, "including the flow in the river, insufficient accommodation and its position for international access, 300 kilometres (186 miles) from Baku."FISA says a second option on the capital city's outskirts could not be completed before the June 2015 event.FISA says "there are good prospects" for rowing to join in 2019. The decision to award Baku the event means that the city will be able to build upon the European Games, which it is hosting in 2015. ... It will be the third occasion that Islamic Solidarity Games has been held since its debut at Mecca in Saudi Arabia in 2005. It was subsequently due to be held in Tehran in 2009 but was, first, rescheduled for a year later and, then, finally cancelled following a dispute which arose between Iran and the Arab World over the use of the term Persian Gulf in logos for the Games. The announcement follows discussions between the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) President Georges Guelzec and Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan's Minister for Youth and Sport, as well as Jim Scheer, chief operating officer for Baku 2015. Both disciplines of the sport are governed by the World Gymnastics Federation (FIG). Acrobatics is a competitive gymnastic discipline where partnerships of gymnasts work together and perform routines consisting of acrobatic moves, dance and tumbling, set to music.Its history as a competitive sport dates back to the 1930s, when it was popular in the Soviet Union, and the first World Championships were held in 1974. Aerobics is the ability to perform continuously complex and high-intensity movement patterns to music - which originates from traditional aerobics - with a high degree of perfectly executed elements of difficulty. The sport featured in the World Games at Lahti in 1997 and the UEG have staged a biennial European Championships since 1999. There is also a World Championships, which was held in Sofia last year, when Spain finished top of the medals table with three golds, ahead of Romania. Organisers of the event have promised they are on target to host a spectacular festival of sport. Baku Games 2015, to start on June 12, will involve around 6,000 competitors across 19 sports, including new formats and disciplines featured for the first time at a major European sports event. The list of sports includes Aquatics, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball 3x3, Beach soccer, Boxing, Canoe Sprint, Cycling, Fencing, Gymnastics, Judo, Karate, Shooting, Table tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Volleyball, and Wrestling. The European Games in Baku next year will be the fulfillment of a long-held aspiration by the European Olympic Committees to stage a major, pan-continental, multi-sport event for the Olympic nations and athletes of Europe. Baku Games organizers will begin sending sports qualification information to the 49 National Olympic Committees of Europe that will participate in the Baku 2015 Games. Organisers also announced that no fewer than seven sports on the Baku Games competition programme will use the Games as a qualifying platform for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, including Cycling, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon and Beach Volleyball. Other Baku 2015 sports may also be added to the Olympic qualification list.
